Interesting that the Historian Tacitus was held in such a high regard that an emperor might have used him as a source of legitimacy. Keyword is "might"

0:40 The fact that after soooo many generals tried to take the purple before emperor Aurelian after hearing of the current emperors death then going to this decision just shows how well loved and respected he was by his military men!

The Latin Roman empire died in 610 AD, the last real Roman emperor was Flavius Phocas 610 AD. The following Heraclids, even though called themselves Romans for convenience, established a Greek polity, of Greek language. For the next 80 - 100 years the Greeks mostly defended behind Constantinople walls, built by the Romans. If we were to talk about all who called themselves Romans then the last Roman emperor should be Francis II 1806 and at least they used Latin officially, or even worse, the Russian emperor Nikolai II, as since Ivan the Terrible the Romanovs entitled themselves emperors of the 3rd Rome, which is ridiculous but happened. From all contemporary sources written by others than the Byzantine Greeks, we find out that others called the Greek speaking Byzantines as Greeks, not Romans.

@@Sofia-0001 It was known as the Roman Empire by contemporaries until its fall in 1453. Those who called them the Greeks were distinguishing themselves from the east. The Holy Roman Empire saw themselves as the revived western half of the empire, distinct from the east. The Eastern Romans also called the westerners Latins even as they continued to consider themselves Roman. The Latin west even saw the Greeks as Romans, but also heretics for going against the Pope and therefore no longer fit to rule. Everyone knew the "Byzantine Empire" was the legitimate Eastern Roman Empire. It did not matter that they were ethnically Greek since being a Roman was based on culture and tradition, not ethnicity. By the Second Century A.D. all free inhabitants of the Empire were Granted citizenship. This included Gauls, Syrians, North Africans, Iberians and, of course, Greeks. Classical Rome also had many non Latin Emperors Including Septimius Severus (North Africa), Caracalla (North Africa and Syria), and Philip the Arab (Northern Arabia) just to name a few. The Classical Romans even identified themselves as associated with Greek culture in their mythology and had used Greek as a formal language among the élite, and even in the Senate. The HRE did not speak Latin either as the language had died out from popular use and four centuries had passed before Charlemagne rose to power. Only priests and monks spoke Latin by that point. Just because the Greek half of the Empire was the half that survived and the Greek Language had replaced Latin does not mean they weren't still Roman.

Another fantastic video. The good new is that you don't have to rely on the Historia Augusta for much longer. The senatorial resurgence is somewhat suspect as it is only in two sources both of which were probably senators: Aurelius Victor and the HA. Eutropius, who was likely using the same master source as them does not mention it. I suspect that Zosimus, who used Dexippus is probably correct in thinking that it was the army that was the deciding factor in selecting Tacitus.

His coins not that great but extremely common… not well struck… and smaller than Aurelians “XXI “ coins (5% silver… twenty parts copper and 1 part silver ) . AURELIAN copper coins (all double denarii) are very common and well struck.

This narrator just isn't it; like with the Aurelian video, it's boring. He's just reading a text, there's no personality whatsoever. Compare it to an Alexander Doddy vid, where there's that verve. 58 seconds in and I'm done. Bring back the Dodd.
