Even worse for me, because I lived just down the highway from this facility. I've toured it, and seen the tanks as they were being built and rolled out-many of the workers went to church where I did and lived on our block. The people who worked there loved their jobs and took them seriously.

Actually, I stand corrected-the 12,000 to 3,000 was a gradual decrease as the shuttle program winded down. By the time this tank came out, there was so few left there was only 300 immediate layoffs-but there were over a thousand laid off in the progress of that year alone.

Zeki Enes Akkan It's actually a coat of insulating foam. It starts off nearly white, and darkens to various hues of brown/orange over time and due to UV rays in sunlight.

George Bush ordered the retirement of the space shuttle program by 2010 after the 2nd disaster. The design finalization of the replacement was made 3 years ago. Not only that, it wound up costing just as much or more to get the shuttles ready for re-use as it would have for new traditional-style rockets. Foam issues also haunted the design. The lack of a emergency escape system was a cost cutting measure sorry to say. The shuttle was a brilliant concept that was ahead of its time for sure.

After scrounging around the New Orleans paper a bit, right after this tank rolled out, the number of workers at Michoud went from 12,000 to about 3,000. It looks like Orion work is going on there along with some other projects, like a British company making windmill blades-but how many who were with the shuttle program, I do not know.

Back to to the old-fashioned rockets now. There are already two versions finalized. One is a bit longer and wider for payloads. The capsule will splash down in the ocean when it returns just like they used to. An escape capsule was demanded this time. What were they thinking not having an escape capsule on the shuttle?

Using empty fuel tanks as living quarters in space has DEFINITELY been considered many times. I have no idea why, but they decided it wasn't practical. Maybe an empty shell is not as good as sending up a section already full of equipment.

All I know is, from the people I have spoken to at the plant and from interviews, the moment that tank left New Orleans, thousands of workers went to line up for pink slips a severance. Possible many were called back with Orion when that go re-approved, but at the time..yeah.

Well done guys for your work. And just think, that monster got to fly faster than anything known to man and rise to great heights in a few minutes then come all the way back down to earth and cool off in the beautiful pacific ocean and with some friendly dolphins following it back to base. Hmm It could probably be classed as a gigantic astronaut with a pointy head.

This external fuel tank does not fall into the Atlantic Ocean with parachutes for re-use like the two solid rocket boosters. It has more fuel and stays with the shuttle longer propelling it to higher altitude. After it’s fuel is exhausted it it then jettisoned away where is breaks up and mostly disintegrates re-entering our atmosphere. Anything that might make it through the atmosphere will fall strategically into the Indian Ocean. It is not recovered.

How do we know they are all getting laid off? Im sure they knew years and months in advance that this was the last booster, I'm sure they weren't that dumb to just sit there right till the end and say,.. "Now what" , I'm willing to bet that they have other NASA jobs to go to.. and many of them I hope were able to secure something for themselves. Don't get me wrong, you still make a very good point. I think I'm just quietly hoping in my heart that they didn't just get laid off!

No way for it to return from orbit without burning up. SRBs didn't go all the way into orbit, just fell straight into ocean, without going too fast. The tank had all the fuel for the shuttle to reach orbit, so needed to stay with it till then.

+Mumsy Wumsy This is just the fuel to gain orbital speed. Escape velocity(actually getting away from Earth's gravitational pull) requires a craft going several thousand MPH faster than the shuttles did. Saturn Vs were twice as big. Just some fun facts :)

Well corprate buy outs of NASA just got personal. At least we have the fact that we can go to and from the space station. The Vergin system should make shuttles mutch more intresting when we can retrofit them to hook up to the ISS(international space station) and use the ammount of fuel accualy needed to escape volocity without mutch of any effort but to detach from a plane and hit the fuel and igniters.
