The people that give so much to essentially "re-create" these WWII classics are amazingly talented. It's so thrilling to see planes like this Sea-Hurricane or a Spitfire or Lancaster actually fly together after so mamy years glued to the ground. Thanks to everyone involved in putting these wonderful winged warriors back in the air. Keep 'em flying fellas!

Sometime in the late 1980s I was working in the short order department at Hawker`s Kingston, Ham Common, factory and spotted a pile of rusty tubes with many patches on them on the office floor. My friend Fred Bentley who had an association with Shuttleworth had brought them up for re-manufacturing. Knowing exactly what they were I went straight into the office and told the foreman that I wanted the job of remaking the tubes. He was struck dumb as I apparently seemed the answer to a prayer. I got the job of course and as I was proficient at working the tube rolling machine that helped. I really liked doing those tubes, it wasn`t work it was a pleasure and they were incorporated into the Hurricane we see above.

Whenever i see these older craftsman and engineers, I hope that the younger people who worked with them, soaked up as much knowledge as they could. They were as rare as the machines they built and maintained. We lose a lot of experience when they die off. I am glad people have made videos to preserve some of their vast and unique knowledge.

thank you for this well-researched work. I was born after WW2, but I have often wondered about the use of fighters launched from non-carrier ships. GB was desperate, being under siege, our island was threatened by starvation through German sinking of merchant ships. the bravery of the pilots involved must never be forgotten. I knew a Hurricane pilot, Ron Smith (Wiltshire), he told me his plane was excellent. equipped with under-wing slow-firing cannons for ground attack. so, a versatile, tough plane. apart from Nazi fighters, his greatest concern was facing AA fire, from the 4-barrel fast firing Nazi ground weapon the Nazi army had, when coming over a rise. he went on to fly a P51 North American Mustang, another great aircraft. glad he made it, it was a pleasure to know him.

During the uncertain summer of 1940 the Miles aircraft company built a stop gap fighter which they called the Miles M20 . Fitted with an allround bubble canopy , armament of 8*303 mg's with lots of ammunition , not as fast as a Spitfire but superior to Hurricane plus a maximum endurance of 5 hrs plus , Its rate of climb of 3200 ft/min and attaining 20,000 ft in under 10 minutes , again better then a Hurricane . Powered by the same RR as Spit and Hurricane , its only drawback was a fixed undercarriage. Miles built a naval version with arrester hook and bracket for catapult launching, it could also jettison the undercarriage in the advent of ditching. The morons at the Admiralty turned it down as hundreds of obsolescent Hurricanes were available . In 1941 the admiralty adopted the Grumman Martlet / Wildcat as its carrier fighter , comparison to the M20 , 20 mph slower, took 3 minutes longer to reach 20,000 ft . Also less endurance . One can only think what might have been .
@bobsakamanos44698 ай бұрын
The Martlet / Wildcat was better than the Sea Hurricane, but when the US saw that war was imminent, they diverted Wildcat production to the USN; hence the revival of the Sea Hurricane option.

Actually the Admiralty ordered single seat Gloster Sea Gladiators in 1938 and investigated the purchase of Spitfires prewar as well, but the Spitfire would take a considerable redesign to be navalized and it didn't appear until on carriers until 1942. It wasn't until variable pitch/constant speed props became available that either the Sea Hurricane of Seafire couid be viable on a carrier and by the time this tech was available on production aircraft the RAF had priority for production deliveries.

Imagine if Britain had been beaten at any point in the war, or even If Britain did what the American did and merely decided to sit out of the War? Hitler would not have opened up the second front and would have then attacked the Soviets with full strength both in the Air and on the ground, meaning Germany would probably have annihilated the USSR as early 1940 the USSR was not prepared. That would have left Nazi Germany in control of all Europe and all the Soviet Union. That would have seen the USA completely annihilated. Yet apparently, the American joined the War to help her ally the UK who was close to defeat, (I always thought they joined the War only after they got attacked at Pearl Harbour), but apparently I'm wrong. No, no really, the American says so. Only they can't seem to ever remember what battle or where about they saved us? But they did you know. Honestly. And there was me, always thinking the closest Britain came to defeat was actually Dundalk at the beginning, but nope, not so.

You are quite on the neutrality act. The whole purpose of it was to make sure that manufactures could not make or sell goods to Nazi Germany or Japan. Whilst the United States was hiding under the fact of neutrality they were gearing up to fight a war. how do you think they built all those airplanes all those tanks and all those weapons they have the Before 1941? It didn’t happen overnight the United States was preparing for war two for five years, even and as far as having Charles Lindbergh serve as a secret spy for the Nazis to get information on their aircraft because they admired him so much they let him walk through their aircraft companies previous to the war. He took that information back to United States government to help them build the B 24 and other bombers and fighters and taught pilots how to get the most out of the aircraft. You don’t know your history
@hardwired5485 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldtartaglia4459 Oh, that's absolutely correct, I've no Idea about history, who needs history? When our lives are ahead of us? I wasted three years of my life achieving my degree in Anglo/American history. Why is it only ever an American who thinks selling weapons and goods at a time of War somehow makes them responsible for winning the War? Yet that's all you Yanks ever say. It's like you don't understand what trade is? It seems, just because it was 'Trade at a time of War' the American thinks that to supply the Brits was some big deal, or some heroic thing or something. It's like you forget Britain had a commonwealth. I mean what is that rubbish you've just typed, all about? Read yourself making things up LOL. Ronald Tartaglia 1 hour ago ''You are quite on the neutrality act. The whole purpose of it was to make sure that manufactures could not make or sell goods to Nazi Germany or Japan.'' RUBBISH!!!!!! The Neutrality Acts were passed by the United States Congress in the 1930s, in response to the growing turmoil in Europe and Asia that eventually led to World War II. They were spurred by the growth in isolationism and non-interventionism in the US following its costly involvement in World War I, and sought to ensure that the US would not become entangled again in foreign conflicts. NOTHING TO DO WITH NOT SUPPLYING GERMANY OR JAPAN. Japan you actually placed an Oil embargo on, and pretended you didn't expect them to attack you for doing so, whereas if you place an oil embargo on ANYONE or country, you're asking to be attacked, especially in those times. Read your fantasy that only comes from your own mind (as you try to look for something I've said to disagree with), only you can't, because silly, everything I've said is true, if it were not true, I'd not ever have said it, as unlike you people, it's not a matter of lying, it should always only be about the truth. Trying to suggest the USA was preparing for War! That's an outright damn lie! And you'll not find any of what you think in any history book, not even the US propaganda History books! It's that's bizarre! But it quite beautifully proves all I've said to be spot on, none of you know anything about your very own country! Oh and then we have to hear about Lend Lease? Big deal, Britain paid every last Cent. Britain sacrificed her wealth, and her empire saving you cowards, that's the truth, because as I've clearly shown in my OP, if we hadn't fought, you'd not be around today. So how about you paying your share towards all Britain spent? And France and all the other countries that did F all? Well? You don't hear us Brits crying about that, do you? Yet you American cowards talk about lend-lease? You're insulting you wankers. You made all your money by supplying the War. But you Americans, want credit or some heroic portrayal of the USA for making an enormous profit from all the participants in the War?. Tell me of any other country on the planet whose people talk of winning a war by supplying it and making an enormous profit from it? Again, the TRUTH is you became a superpower at Britain's expense. Learn REAL History, not that American version of history as they ''pretend'' to see it.

The easy way to figure out the right from the wrong in all War situations, (when the lies from the media start), is to ask yourself what you'd be fighting for? The answer to that question should tell you whose right, whose wrong. We Brits are going to end up in a War where it will see us only fighting for US global tyranny against the rest of the world fighting for their freedom. The Irony, I'm glad I've lived most of my life, If the UK doesn't change course rapidly and move as far away from the USA as humanly possible this country is finished. We fight against all attempts at tyranny, and always have. Only the UK has fought for freedom against every attempted effort at tyranny, whether tyranny over Europe or over the World, the UK has always fought against it, and has always won, every attempt at tyranny in our worlds modern history. We British could never support this clear and obvious attempt by the USA at global military control as well as global financial control. Because, that is what becomes global tyranny. We will fight against it though, but never for it. Before ever War in history as soon as the people have found out we've always seen enormous shifts in alliances many times with some of the most unexpected alliances formed and the usual alliances are broken, and usually by the demands of the people themselves. Every War in history has seen this, it will be no different this time. Every War in history has been lost by the country trying for domination, control or global tyranny. Not one has ever won, countries with some of the largest, greatest, most enormous military's ever seen at that time, have all lost, and not only lost but all have been annihilated. The American people would be very wise to remember that. Because there's a reason for that. When you're fighting for the right reasons, fighting against attempted tyranny or oppression, you learn very quickly to overcome anything thrown at you, you fight with all your might, everyone around you is the same so you easily outfight anyone fighting for tyranny or fighting for the wrong reasons, because those troops all lack any real sort of fight. so no matter what or how many weapons they may have, they can't ever match the fight against them. We see this in every War throughout history, over and over again, we also always see that the troops all fighting for the righteous reasons, like their own country's freedom, always seem to become invincible! Every War is the same. It will be no different this time, only the annihilation might be much more severe, but just as deserved.

In 2015 Russia exposed the USA for supporting terrorists in Syria and that forced the USA to admit to the whole WORLD they had recruited - Trained - Armed - Supplied - Protected - Paid - Used brutal terrorists (sorry I forgot, Americans like the term moderate head chopping fake rebels my mistake). And not one of the Americans has even protested against all of this as every other country on earth would already be doing. The American people have supported their own country's admitted terrorism, and not even protested against it. Their own support of this obvious attempted US tyranny, is the sickest thing we've all seen since Nazi Germany. Today we even have to see millions of them cheering their criminal murdering President, today we see millions of them chanting USA USA USA like Nazi's. All they need is the salute, and they'll be a replica of the Nazi. The last society and the only society we've seen do this before (not even protest against their own country's killing) was Nazi Germany 33-45, that's the only time in history the people have done what the Americans are today, or rather what they're not doing. Yet they're all so uneducated and all so up their own asses, they can't see it!! The Nazi was just like that. Every society, (and there have been many) who've heard about, seen themselves, or had it admitted to them, what their own country's Government were doing wrong, whether it be murdering at home or abroad have always protested against it and demanded it stops. Many have gone further, many have died doing so, but every society that's faced similar dilemmas, have all at the very least stood up against it and protested against it demanding it stops. And they've always done it at any cost, no matter what, because innocent people were being murdered by their own country's wrongdoing, it's what all good people have always done all through history, It's what good people have always done, because it had to be done, and it was the right thing to do. Apart from once, Nazi Germany 1933-45. And now the USA 2019. I can't work out what these people have been brought up believing in, it's like none of them even know or understand right from wrong any more.

America only saw the chase of Germany back to Berlin in WW2 We all know the Americans really supported Nazi Germany and waited and waited and waited for the Nazi to defeat Britain. They even put up with 1000s of tons of their own shipping in the Atlantic gap being sunk by German U Boats killing thousands of American Merchant Seamen, and still, Roosevelt refused to declare War on Germany. And let's not forget,... Hitler had made his intention of global dominance known in 1936 meaning it was always a World War, the USA tried to suggest it was a European War, but soon were forced to change their minds as soon as, and only because they got attacked. The truth is that the American people protested against supplying us British in millions. Millions of the Americans wanted to support Germany, my grandad told me (when I was a kid) that all the British troops heard about them protesting against us over the radio, and they all became known as the ''cowardly Yankers'' obviously meaning Wankers, that's what they all called the American troops even when they got here, they'd say out loud ''here comes the cowardly yankers'', It's not hard to see why. The American only arrived after being FORCED to fight after the attack on Pearl Harbour to help with the final assault. More truth is after Pearl Harbour the British declared War on Japan without a second thought and fought Japan long before the USA Battle of Hong Kong. But the cowardly USA STILL refused to declare War on Germany (who were Japans ally). And that actually speaks volumes about the USA, It really says it all, they all really thought the British would get crushed by Nazi Germany, and they waited and they waited, for Germany to defeat Britain. Roosevelt even refused to allow Britain to have 50 old, sinking wooden WW1 destroyers just left rotting in US waters as he had an election coming up and knew it would not be welcomed by the American people, what does that say to everybody? We needed them to patch up and use for protection for the convoys from the U Boats, that were carrying the kids (our parents and grandparents) from the Island before the Blitz. Roosevelt only agreed after the UK agreed to give up its military bases across the world and lease them to the USA for 100 years! Some ally LOL! They were, and in all honesty still are, Britain's only real enemy.

By the end of 1941, Britain had survived the blitz and had beaten Germany In the Battle of Britain (alone) Inflicting Hitlers first defeat his first air defeat. Britain had held Tobruk and pushed/forced Rommel all the way back to El Agheila where he came from. Inflicting Hitler's second defeat, his first land defeat. Britain (with tremendous support from her Commonwealth) had overcome the mass of German U-Boats In the North Atlantic and was receiving most of its needed cargo again. Inflicting Hitler's third defeat and first Naval defeat. While over on the other front the Soviets (alone) and at a massive cost of over 10-20 million men had turned Germany around and were now forcing them back to Germany and their demise. That was all before the end of 1941, When did the American come? In Europe, we'd been through the Blitz, the Battle of Britain and many battles, we were also fighting in Greece, Egypt, Burma and many places around the world sure we had some hard times, sure we lost a few battles, but we won far more! We were never beaten or even close to being beaten. The closest Britain came to defeat was at the start, in Dunkirk! So where the American gets this notion from that the USA saved Britain nobody knows? It's so insulting it's SO WRONG! Saved Britain from what exactly? When and where did the USA save Britain? What are you people talking about? Where was Britain losing that the US saved us from? You're Idiots. Roosevelt actually set about asking Hitler for some kind of deal/arrangement to avoid getting involved in the war. Hitler even ridiculed the cowardice as he read the letter to the German people, now If that's not cowardly then I don't know what Is. Hitler laughed at the USA mocking you calling you cowards for refusing to declare War on them, and he then declared War on the USA... How embarrassing you cowardly Yanks huh? You Americans were cowards at every turn during WW2. Yet we have to listen to you trying to claim things you never did? You're insulting and ignorant. You're so thick, so wrong, and so wanting to take credit for things you NEVER did, and what's even worse is, you take it from the REAL heroes like all the Commonwealth countries, Canada, Australia and New Zealand who along with Britain saved your asses as I'll explain. Imagine if Britain had been beaten at any point in the war, or even If Britain did what the USA did and merely decided to sit out of what was a World War? We could have done that as Hitler never wanted War against Britain. So If Britain had simply done the same a the USA, then Hitler would not have needed to open up a second front and would have then attacked the Soviets early 1940 with full strength both in the air and on the ground, meaning Germany would have annihilated the USSR as early as 1940 the USSR was not in anyway prepared to defend themselves. That would have left Nazi Germany in control of all Europe and all the Soviet Union. That would have seen the USA completely annihilated. Try to deny that. "In a 1945 a state department survey on the US public's attitudes to its wartime allies, Britain was the least trusted country," Just another thing that shows the truth. You made all your money by supplying the War. But you Americans want credit or some heroic portrayal of the USA for making an enormous profit from all the participants in the War?... Tell me of any other country on the planet whose people talk of winning a war by supplying it and making an enormous profit from it? Again, the TRUTH is you became a superpower at Britain's expense. LOL @ not trusting Britain, you were the ultimate cowards and traitors as you've always been to every one of your so-called allies. Hilarious, what a truly vile country that really is. The bullshit is like nothing this world has ever seen before. But when you're useless, cowardly and brain-dead what else have you Americans got other than your bullshit?? Winning the Battle of Britain was instrumental in getting Hitler to actually lose the war by making his biggest mistake and opening up the second front more so than anyone winning it. Nevertheless, the Soviets holding their front at the enormous cost of well over 10-20 million lives before turning Germany around and chasing them home to their demise is what actually ended and won the war. Most certainly not the US by the stretch of anyone's Imagination. The arrogance of a naive nation when they did eventually arrive saw them get a crushing defeat in the desert. Utter tomfoolery and sheer Incompetence. Oh yes, the super Intelligent Yank thought as the Brits managed to force Rommel all the way out of Egypt It must be quite easy, so that would be where they would gently Introduce their soldiers to the theatre of war.... 40.000 Crushed within days! They then tried to help take Italy, only It had Churchill groaning that he'd expected a ''rabid Wildcat just let loose'' but all he got was a blubbering whale stuck on a beach as the Yanks decided to secure the beachhead rather, than as planned, storm Inland to cut off and attack the retreating Germans as Britain forced them inland. Oh, and then (as If not bad enough) decided to ignore the ''plan'' of cutting the retreating Germans off as the Brits forced them Inland, but Instead headed straight for Rome (so they could be first) while allowing the German's the time they needed to regroup and Dig In. Such arrogant wankers! It's reckoned that foolish selfish act alone cost over 3000 British lives ... Idiots! They then decided to do the most cowardly act of human history by murdering near on a million civilians with a nuclear attack TWICE. Right after the rest of the world had fought a conventional war, the US had to use the brutal cowardly murder of civilians against Japan. And then the lies as we can now see today, they claimed Japan surrendered after the second terrorist bomb, however that's not the case at all. No, Japan Ignored the first terrorist attack, they also Ignored the second terrorist attack, Japan only surrendered after Stalin had kept his promise to Invade East Asia and the Soviets had crushed the Japanese, that alone ended all Japan's hopes of getting Stalin to act as a mediator for a conditional surrender. It was only then that the Japanese surrendered (as we now can read from the people of the time), It's actually undeniable because the timing of the Surrender Proves It. It was another American lie.

I have heard a tale that one of the first votes to be held by the new American Republic after the war of Independence was which language to adopt as the national language . The story goes that English won by one vote. People tend to forget that there were large numbers of Germans fighting with the British during that war after all king George the third was a German , and many Germans settled in the Mid west of the USA , many more German and Italian settlers also arrived after the first world war, let`s also not forget that many Americans were also descendants of Scottish, Welsh and Irish Migrants who were not very Friendly towards the British Empire and So Roosevelt had to tread very carefully and justify his requests to congress for British war aid , My own view is that Britain would have had no choice but to sue for peace had the USA not supplied vital Equipment and food. Add in the fact that Winston Churchill was Half Jewish and His mother was an American and you can understand why the Americans did what they did.

@soaringtractor Brits are made up of Welsh, English, Irish and Scottish , surely you mean English/ Us immigrants are waaaaaay down at 12th. your finding it hard to keep your anti English jealousy at bay. Anyway it just proves the point made by `Hard Wired ` that the vast majority of Americans were pro Nazi, and not pro English so Roosevelt must be given credit for his stance on lend lease. I`m assuming you are a citizen of the USA. , a wonderful country in my humble opinion, and i will make two last points , when your at the top of the pile no one likes you they only fear you and number two , when your at the top your there to be shot at and you have NO real friends. peace.

Hard Wired - This post exhibits considerable ignorance of American history and politics. The United States was not of one mind about the war prior to Pearl Harbor. Only a few Americans were ever Nazi sympathizers, but many were isolationist. President Roosevelt supported Britain from the beginning of the conflict, but did not have a free hand to put the United States into the war. After Pearl Harbor the United States was fully committed to the war effort in both Europe and the Pacific, but was unprepared. There is too much fiction in it to waste my time refuting all of it.

Roosevelt was not the problem, it was Congress and the American people, who were willing to sacrifice anything to avoid war at any cost (even costs greater than the cost of war). But Britain was fighting a fight and America needed Britain to win it or atleast not lose it and should have been supplying Britain with materials etc at no cost if they weren't willing to send men to fight, roosevelt was often called a war monger leading up to ww2 and during ww2 before 1942. British empire is the only one that stood up and fought on principle. France etc. needed Germany in line as they were neighbours and the USA and Soviets didn't fight for principle at all (Soviets were even allied to nazis in the invasion of Poland), they fought because they were forced to fight by being attacked.

Apparently a few days ago youtube updated all channel and set adverts on by default without asking anyone. See other creators who are fairly mad about this and have uploaded videos showing what has happen. Adblockers stop them but was posted several months ago, so it possible they don't even realise whats happened yet...
