This is one of my favorite movies to watch. I feel that it has aged beautifully and still holds up as one of the best fantasy films. The story is great, the animation is GORGEOUS, the characters were memorable and the music was sooo fitting. Fun Fact: They actually made a graphic novel adaptation of the book and the artwork is breathtaking. I'd highly recommend checking it out. You will not be disappointed.

I want to talk about Unicorns and Dragons as well, like how most dragons from film are missing two front legs making them wyverns. I think this is because this makes dragons easier to animate just like adding a cgi horn on a white horse makes it easier for film makers but we loose the cloved hooves and lions tail.
@SilverStarlingsDen7 жыл бұрын
I like your thinking William ^^. It is true so often we lose these aspects of the traditional myths for convenience. But it is movies like these that we can appreciate for taking the effort to do them right ^^

Fun Fact - Christopher Lee is also the voice actor in the German translation of the movie. And his voice, with just the slightest hint of accent, combined with the relatively hard spoken language is so chilling and so dramatic - just love it. And to the rating of the movie It was the 80' - the time as the G rating meant something. Aaah yess - G-rated movies from the 80' scarring children till this day....

Yay, the Last Unicorn! I love this movie! I have fond memories of it when I was younger. Now that I am older, I have gained more understanding and I appreciate the bittersweetness the story has to offer. There is one thing I wish you guys could have mentioned; the story of itself (especially in the book) feels almost like a deconstruction of a fariytale. The characters know they are in a fariytale, and there are moments they openly bring up this fact. It's also like they are breaking the fourth wall. Here's a passage from the book: “The true secret in being a hero lies in knowing the order of things. The swineherd cannot already be wed to the princess when he embarks on his adventures, nor can the boy knock on the witch's door when she is already away on vacation. The wicked uncle cannot be found out and foiled before he does something wicked. Things must happen when it is time for them to happen. Quests may not simply be abandoned; prophecies may not be left to rot like unpicked fruit; unicorns may go unrescued for a very long time, but not forever. The happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story. Great heroes need great sorrows and burdens, or half their greatness goes unnoticed. It is all part of the fairy tale.” - Lir, the Last Unicorn Plus, there is the aforementioned bittersweet ending. The happily ever after that happens for most fairy tale couples does not happen for Amalthea and Lir. The unicorn has her immortality back, and her people are free...but at the cost of her innocence and a chance of being with her beloved. When I was younger, I didn't see the implication of what seemed like a perfect ending. Now that I am older and can understand more, it all makes sense. Anyways, this was a fun video, mama wolf. You and Bliss make for a fun twosome. ^^

As well as being the thing I really needed as a pick me up. So thank you for that, both of you. Silver Starling, your videos are always a blast to watch, as I find them both fun and enjoyable, as well as having a nice calm and mellow tone to them. The screenplay was done by Peter S. Beagle... so naturally he kept his own story faithful in the film, with changes only as needed to fit the time limits. As for the animation being amazing... well, many of the Japanese animators who worked on this film soon after joined Miazaki to found Studio Ghibli.. and you may note more than a few stylistic and technical similarities between this and Ghibi's first feature film, "Nausicaa and the Valley of the Winds".

This movie (and book) are absolutely amazing. I highly advise anyone who hasn't already seen/read it to do so. The Last Unicorn by America is one of only two songs that *always* sends shivers down my spine when I listen to it. A couple of interesting facts regarding this movie: Christopher Lee was a huge fan of this book and when he showed up to recording he brought a copy of the book with a bunch of sections highlighted, and said those parts must be in the movie or he was going to walk. Also, Christopher Lee, who spoke a bunch of languages, insisted on coming back and re-recording his lines whenever the movie was dubbed into a new language.

There's more than one "traditional unicorn": What you described is the "central European" unicorn. The Spanish unicorn has a more twisting horn and small wings just above each of it's fetlocks. The Alps/Carpathian unicorn is smaller and more goat-like. The Russian unicorn is pony-sized with a horse tail, but very swift. The Asian unicorn has a fine "flaming" mane and may well have dragon scales over much of it's body. It's sometimes called the Qilin/Kirin. The Gaelic unicorn also has a horse tail and is very shaggy to keep warm in the winter. Bible translations have unicorns as simply being "one-horned rhinos". The Indian unicorn is more of a one-horned donkey with a red face, goat tail/beard and white body. There's also the Black Unicorn and the Winged Unicorn who mythologies are less certain.

I read a lot of fantasy stories when I was very young due to me living so close to the library in Alaska I can remember the name very faintly but I can it was called "the snow lit library." (I'm putting air quotes because I haven't been there in sixteen years) one book that always drew my attention was this gold and red book it was very large and thick as 10 inches of snow on the cover was a picture of two beast one a golden dragon and the second a silver unicorn the owner who was also the librarian named mr. Smith was a kind and gentle man he said that the book I saw was a book he wrote he called it "the guide of mythical beast." I was he's favorite and when we moved he gave me that book in it was the story of the last unicorn and thus I still have it to this day and yes there were other stories to including my favorite story that mr. Smith wrote himself "the last of two dragons." God bless you mr. Smith for giving me this amazing book of beast!, Legends!, and more! (Update) I have recently today watched the film and I'm enjoying it so far.

Wow, this brings back memories. I'm with Lightning Bliss on this one, though: still think the Red Bull is terrifying to this day. The first time my parents rented this movie for me, I think I ran out of the room in tears when the Red Bull first rampaged onto the screen! I'm also quite certain that this film plays a big part in why Christopher Lee unnerved me in every film I saw him in, because King Haggard scared me quite nearly as much as the Bull. One thing I think might also have contributed to The Last Unicorn's lack of popularity is that it's a pretty heavy, dense piece, and I recently found out that there were a lot of cuts made to shorten its running time that might have hurt some of its comprehensibility, but have over various video releases and into the DVD releases been mostly fixed. In fact, apparently there were different versions released at around the same time, which makes it even more of a tangle.

I watched the movie a few weeks ago and I noticed how men are unable to see unicorn horns and instead see a regular horse. I don't know about you, but I'd be kinda weirded out if I saw a horse with a lion's tail and hooves of a deer.

Fair! I think it might have been also to save on animation costs to jsut remove the horn but good point!

Out of curiosity, what creature is your OC? I can't tell if it's a sphinx or something else
@SilverStarlingsDen7 жыл бұрын
Uhhhhh It's a winged wolf. I am sorry if there was some confusion.
@sadlobster17 жыл бұрын
Oh, that was my first guess. But I thought that would seem stupid
@SilverStarlingsDen7 жыл бұрын
hey, it's okay. there's nothing stupid about thinking it was a winged wolf ^^ and I like you were thinking outside the box ^^
@sadlobster17 жыл бұрын
See, I've only seen a winged wolf from the Disney's Hercules series. Are they a creature from actual mythology or did you come up with it yourself? In any case; I can just imagine the look on Dr.Wolf's face, should he meet you ;)
@SilverStarlingsDen7 жыл бұрын
You have a great eye ^^ Hecate did indeed have a pair of winged wolves and they are present in some stories with her in it. While there has been other Winged wolf OC's made there have been no other winged wolves in mythology except Hecate. Silver Starling, however, I decided to make a winged wolf species for her so technically you can say I did that myself ^^ And that would definitely be an interesting encounter ^^

As a kid who grew up with this movie, I was stunned it didn't do well at box offices. I knew at once it was a masterpiece of its time and never missed a showing on TV. Oh well, my tastes have always been superior to the lesser beings of my so-called peers! SCOFF SCOFF SCOFF!! BLAH BLAH SUPERIOR BLAH BLAH SUPREME BEING BLAH BLAH!! ;D

I actually saw the last unicorn a long while back and... I thought it was good. At first, I thought it was gonna be like a girly barbie movie, but I gave it a chance and a mental boot kicked me out the mental window. I was wrong, this movie was actually good.

I totally agree about the fact that unicorns should be shown with lion tails, cloven hooves, and more of a deer-like head shape. I just think that’s how unicorns look. Also, do not get me started on how I feel about when people call alicorns, unicorns! I mean think about it, whenever you see a “unicorn” on a kids show or something, IT HAS WINGS! Why!? People are calling alicorns unicorns! It’s so stupid! Ok ok, I’m getting a bit carried away. I’m just saying, Unicorns dont have wings, Pegasi have wings, and Alicorns have both wings and a horn.

fair and that is also true, mythology changes often as it is an oral telling. Only written down tales are as OSP would say "is the fossilized versions of them". While sometimes it is important to let mythology flow, it is also important to recognize the basic set up of each so good on you!

my oc started off as a unicorn and she still has the orginal Unicorn tail and somewhere while she was growing up she got turned into a alicorn but she kept the Unicorn tail and her horn is the original unicorn horn too and her hooves are the same hoves that a unicorn has
