A'reyt Bruce. This was really interesting. As a Yorkshireman, my county is known for Vikings. Note that as a Yorkshireman I am bound by tradition to mention that I am at every opportunity. I often get the response of "They went viking. Do not call them that!" on my comments, when I mention the subject. I always say that it is our modern word for our ancestors and something like "Hardrada luck". Surely they Canute be serious, these Knut-ers? I loved holidays to Scotland as a kid, so finding out that Scotland was made from Picts, Scots and Angles coming together to protect themselves from the Vikings and the link to my local history made your history more interesting. Plus, it was even before you "conquered" Doncaster. Mind you, Whitby claims Dracula as well as saying it has better fish and chips than anyone else, even Oban.

In his book Anglo Saxons, an excellent book apart from a very sloppy reference to MacBeth, Marc Morris writes about Canute’s foray into England, where of course he eventually became king. I didn’t know about this battle before your brilliantly told video and like others thought “this’ll be about Largs.” But it could be argued this battle didn’t just assure the continuation of the Kingdom of Scots, but changed the path of English history, notwithstanding there was already a powerful Viking base in the Danelaw.

My Dad was a Prison Officer at Peterhead, and I grew up there till we moved back to Glasgow at the age of 9. I have fond memories of "days out" to Cruden Bay and swimming in the sea in my knitted woolen burgendy swimming trunks 🤣. Never realised the history that surrounded us at that time, but we loved our time in the North East, so much so that my Dad's last wish was to have his ashes scattered off the harbour wall at Peterhead, even though we were all born in Glasgow. A visit back is long overdue, but with the discovery of the oil I fear so much will have changed.

Thank you Bruce for another fantastic eye opening story! The Viking 'thing' that you addressed at the beginning is the reason why you're a historian and they are history majors! 😃 And it hadn't occurred to me that these people in the 11th century were in fact who you rightly identified them as. I will look at this with new eyes in the future. I am wondering if the bodies were properly removed to make the golf course or left there because the terrain was good and just needed a hair of sculpting. Kind of hoping for them that they were left. I know that some folks will think I'm awful and that a golf course in modern times is a horrible thing to do, but think about it for a moment. The grounds are kept in perpetuity and battles are fought on the links every day, complete with with shouting, cussing, cheers and betting! I'm willing to wager that the dead who have the learned the follies of their ways first-hand are shouting, laughing and wagering right along with this new type of 'warfare'! It's certainly much safer and usually has a brew or two at the end so they're probably applauding them! I've seen my people's graveyards become much worse at home, so I'm glad that something that actually protects this sacred ground will be there, probably forever. Fields would be boring to these men!

I don't remember the term Scots-Irish having much of a meaning in the UK.

Has anyone ever heard the the term "Six Kings" VI Kings ? A rather interesting unorthodox departure from the standard fare. Hard to find anything on this as I read this several years ago - It was along the lines of British Israelism where-as - some-how 6 of the lost tribes from the second diaspora out of Israel ended up in present day Scandinavia. Hey! Don't hate the player hate the game! i.e. Tribe of Dan - Danube, Denmark :) Cheeri Endrassa!
