I really love the disruption lab grown diamonds are causing in the industry. Diamonds are a perfectly marketed racket.

@@Spocker93 After 5 years, I'm still waiting for the disruption 😂 no body wants to have synthetic ones. It's not about the material. It's all about the natural rock being in the soil for millions of years and having a millions years of history. The growers think we buy them for the crystal 😂

Thanking you in advance as we watch and listen in very closely. Carlsbad a really nice living and working place located in Southern California along the California coast. JCK show 2019 really opened the synthetic diamonds, we are two watchmakers that are as thrilled as one can imagine since being into the lab grown diamond knowledge base since 2005. Very much for these two guys to think about is there in fact a value because of the the geological time effort versus the synthetic time efforts? Lance & Patrick.

Why GIA call it synthetic diamonds if it's the same as earth diamonds in composition ? Should just be call lab created . Synthetic means not real or fake .
@niceratio1
@niceratio1 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think the word synthetic should be put under a bad light. They are synthetic diamonds. They are made by a synthesis and also are not natural. that being said they are exactly the same as natural diamonds.. just the origin is different.
@anthonybellefontaine6964
@anthonybellefontaine6964 4 жыл бұрын
In gemmology, synthetic means the same as natural but man-made. So synthetic sapphire is a sapphire made in a lab and synthetic diamonds are diamonds that are made in a lab. Exactly the same material just man-made. The word you are after for not real or fake is simulant/simulated. Things like CZ and Moissanite would be a simulant.

I doubt it they are powerful enough to sweep in and dominate the lab grown market. They have been making lab gowns for a long time already mainly for industrial uses. They will probably roll out lab growns on the market for cheaper than anyone else can and then market them as inferior to naturals. People will swallow it. You are never going to have a ticket out of having to spend 10-20k on and engagement ring either way i'll tell you that for free.

DeBeers hasn't had a monopoly on diamonds in years. Lab grown diamonds are OK and can be enjoyed in jewelry as long as you know that they are not natural diamonds, since these are naturally scarce and hold more value to people who appreciate diamonds. GIA is simply advocating for transparency and full disclosure. They are not working for DeBeers. Thank God GIA is there to stop the scammers who will try to pass off lab grown diamonds as natural ones.

So don't, gia certs are for collectors and the ones concerned with origin and authentication. They need to research lab grown diamonds to discern characteristics that seperate them from naturals. Believe it or not, there are people who want the real thing.

It is becoming more difficult for small time diamond buyers like myself with the consumer market buying these synthetics. There is without a doubt more marketing on these stones than natural diamonds to the retail market. Without advanced equipment some of these are extremely difficult to tell apart from natural stones. Not to mention the majority of synthetics cost just as much as natural diamonds, yet have almost no value in the secondary market. Thanks for the info!

Why is it so important to identify natural or lab grown if both look the same with same hardness and all ?? Actullay lab grown diamonds are more environmental friendly and less labor exploiting and they are the future for sure !!! we don't need GIA anymore .... GIA is becoming obsolete.

I don't understand why they are still so expensive and I will always love the genuine natural diamonds hands down. OK I admit that mining can be dangerous and lab created diamonds stop things like "blood diamonds!" so for that matter alone lab created diamonds are a lot safer, however I would rather have a natural real grown diamond any day. My conscience would be far clearer especially when I buy a diamond solitaire as a gift for someone special.

simply put the whole diamond as a gem industry is f..ked no diamond you buy can you be sure is a real natural diamond unless its a well known old one the value of the diamond is done soon people will be able to grow them in their homes and in all sizes making the millions of dollar ones worthless this is justice for them being over priced for many years and the whole industry being currupt

That's right. Back in the late nineteenth century, they started creating lab grown rubies. They became all the rage back then because people who could not afford a natural ruby could buy them at an affordable price. But as they produced more, the prices went down and people lost interest in them as an investment. They can now be had for a few dollars a carat. The same thing will happen with lab grown diamonds.

I'm convinced to never buy a mined diamond. The lab versions are better looking along with being environmentally and morally more desired. As technology improves the mined diamonds should be expected to drop in value even more. Ideally you can get the best value from synthetic stones like moissanite or cubic zirconia which are even less costly than lab grown diamonds. Get an engagement ring with a synthetic and it will provide a better future for your marriage because you are more prudent with money.
@shibbidydoowop
@shibbidydoowop 4 жыл бұрын
A rare commodity only holds its value if it's in fact rare. If you get a lab grown you could save some money sure, but expect 0 resale value as it is not rare by any sense. The same goes for things like currency. If you're willing to use cubic zirconia in an engagement ring, why even pantomime the ritualistic archetype of proposal with a ring at all? To each his own. I do agree that the allure of diamonds has been hyped up through history but to charge 75% of the price for a lab grown that has no value at all is an even bigger sham.
@shibbidydoowop
@shibbidydoowop 4 жыл бұрын
@ I think we just have different points of view on where value is in this arena. The point that a lab grown diamond 'could' be better in the 4 C's is irrelevant. That's interchangeable between any 2 stones you compare; natural or lab grown. I can see the merit in your point of view but, for me personally, I rather have a stone that has some resale value and potential. Lab diamonds will only get cheaper with time (which is great as long as it's being disclosed as lab grown). I cant see natural diamonds becoming cheaper. With luxury items that store value and have no utilitarian purpose, rarity is of the utmost importance. A lab grown diamond may have psychological value and value in savings for the consumer but will never be a store of value. For instance, you could alloy brass in a way that it looks identical to gold, it will never hold value like gold though. Admittedly, diamonds are of more arbitrary value than gold, but my example is analogous. My biggest issue though is lab grown diamonds being passed off as natural to consumers. That's really where my quandary lies.

What an idiotic comment. How are they becoming "obsolete"? If anything their relevance and importance is INCREASING with the increased need of the market to distinguish such product characteristics and the increased need for scientific research into various phenomena of synthetic gems.

I would agree with the previous reply. GIA is more essential than ever in order to stop scammers from passing off lab created diamonds as natural ones. It's all about transparency and disclosure. If you were making any kind of investment, not just diamonds, but say an investment in a stock. Would you not want full disclosure in order to protect your investment? I would.

Synthetic diamonds always will be very BAD product without any future. I will never support the sale of synthetic (also known as lab-grown) diamonds, because I always support hard-working miners especially in Africa, where mining industry is for local african miners everything. Without this job, many people will lose their jobs, so diamond is only one- this 100% natural product, that gives work and a lot of joy to many people in Africa and all over the world. Remember one thing: When you buy lab-grown diamonds many miners for which mining diamonds in the mine is the only source of income for themselves and their families lose their jobs every day ************** PLEASE RESPECT AND SUPPORT MINERS **************
