Welcome to the first of a three part interview series with Professor Akiko Iwasaki. The series will cover the thorny subject of viral persistence, vaccine injury, autoimmunity and the latest state of the research and our understanding of the condition.
In part 1 it’s all about viral persistence, and how Professor Iwasaki’s Paxlovid trial fits in. This was originally an interview series with Dr Asad Khan, but due to a tech malfunction we had to re-record. Dr Khan sends his apologies for not being part of it. A huge thank you to Professor Iwasaki for sparing her precious time to go through it all again!

How refreshing to hear Professor Iwasaki plainly say that "respiratory viruses" can affect many organs! I have commented many times about "unknown" "really tough" viral illnesses that predated COVID. A basic pattern was these illnesses started with mild respiratory symptoms and about 48 hours later intestines were affected. Neurological symptoms followed for many and a number of people never fully recovered after that. Disabling sequelae after viral infections are not new but until Long COVID, doctors did their best to deny such could happen. Thank you, Gez and Professor Iwasaki!

Excellent comment! My personal experiences and that of others -anecdotally - matches the chronology you describe. If folks are truly ill due to either Covid/SARS COV2 or following the mRNA injections, it's already established that the S-protein travels through the body via the blood and seeks to attach to ACE-2 receptors ANYWHERE in ANY ORGAN. ACE-2 receptors are found in epithelial tissue, the liason tissue between blood vessels and organs. Therefore this/these are diseases of the BLOOD. And disruptions of the IMMUNE SYSTEM, as the messenger RNA retrains the innate immune system to focus on only this one pathogen. To the detriment of other immune readiness. The intestinal organs as both a neurological and an immunological "command center" are clearly involved. 🤓

I believe CHRONIC STRESS is one of the most important factors as to why people develop Long COVID, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Lyme Disease, MCAS, and POTS. Eliminating the Chronic Stress root cause is required for treatment and prevention of these diseases. If the Long COVID patient has reached the point where some movement is also possible, stretching , light yoga, mild exercise, such as a walk in Nature, may help improve Sleep, further reducing Stress. The JUST ROB Channel offers Polyvagal exercises to calm the Nervous System and other unique information. Loss of a Loved One, Divorce, Loss of a Job/Financial Security, a Traumatic Accident or Childhood Event, Surgery, or Athletic Overtraining are all examples of Chronic Stress. But one of the WORST Chronic Stresses is if you Believe you will get Very Sick or Die from an illness. A Type-A High Achiever/Perfectionist Personality typically will place healthful activities, such as getting a proper night’s sleep, as secondary to accomplishments. Type A’s will often want to quickly resume work and exercise, rather than rest and fully recover. An acute infection, such as COVID-19, can be merely the Trigger to the complete breakdown of an ALREADY Compromised Immune System from Chronic Stress. Once the breakdown occurs, secondary infections of other viruses (such as Epstein-Barr Virus), bacteria, molds, protozoans, and parasites that were FORMERLY being held in remission will now resurface. There is also little innate Immune System response to stop any NEW infections. The exacerbation of the effects of Environmental Toxins, Autoimmune Diseases, Allergies, and other Comorbidities may further complicate the disease and make it unique to almost EVERY Long Hauler! 🙀 Chronic Stress suppresses the Immune System and Digestion, making it more likely to develop Immune System dysfunctions, such as MCAS, and poor absorption of essential nutrients, leading to deficiencies that can cause issues like Leaky Gut. A deficiency in B-Complex Vitamins can lead to Leaky Gut as well as a Leaky Blood/Brain Barrier. A leaky BBB will allow pathogens and foreign proteins into the Brain, where they may cause inflammation, leading to Dysautonomia, Brain Fog, Loss of Memory, Headache, Depression & Anxiety, Chronic Fatigue, and other neurological symptoms. A B Vitamin deficiency will also make you feel more Stressed, and the primary objective is to Reduce Stress. Deep Sleep is the ONLY Time the waste products of inflammation and normal metabolism are removed from the Brain, so reduction of Chronic Stress to allow a Good Night’s Sleep is important for treatment. Typically, a Change in Attitude is required to reduce Chronic Stress and disrupt the endless repetition of negative thoughts. LifeWithKyle discusses how he uses Meditation to Calm his Nervous System and diminish Long COVID symptoms during a relapse. He offers Guided Meditations that are designed to make one feel SAFE, reducing Stress and avoiding the “Fight or Flight” Immune response. Fasting is a good Lifestyle Change to help restore integrity to the Gut and Blood/Brain Barrier as well as repair a dysfunctional Immune System. It gives the intestines a rest from Digestion, allowing energy to be focused on Repair. Fasting is a Stress on the Body, and like Exercise, should be approached gradually, probably AFTER you’ve had success with Meditation and Breathwork. However, one should realize EVERYONE FASTS WHEN THEY SLEEP. The key is to extend the benefits of Fasting into your Waking Hours. You should start with Time-Restricted Eating, gradually reducing the time of your Daily Feeding Window until you are comfortable eating within an 8 hour or less Feeding Window. From there, you can attempt a 24 hour or Multi-Day Fast. Don’t be discouraged if you end a Fast early. You can try again on another Day. Fasting will be easier if you follow a Healthy Low Carb, Whole Food Ketogenic Diet. Dr. Eric Berg can show you how to begin. Eliminating Grains and consuming Nutritional Yeast, a great source of B-Complex Vitamins, along with other B Vitamin-rich foods and supplementing Vitamin B1, will help to restore Intestinal and Blood/Brain Barrier integrity.

Excellent examples! Another of my interests is history and if we think about what was needed in order to survive, even in the last century, there has always been the need, even the morality, for people to get well and be productive citizens again. In the last century in the U.S. there was involvement in one war after another and the need for the populace to pretend to be well enough to be drafted and support war efforts. Then there was the "War on Poverty" and the piecemeal steps toward government socialization. Through the 1960's doctors would tell folks that remained ill after flu for instance, that they were malingering, mental and they had nothing to complain about because soldiers who had seen combat had experienced much worse. Unless we had seen combat, we had no excuse to malinger and complain. Then welfare and disability payments were expanded and I think government was afraid to admit that common flu could permanently damage a significant percentage of those who had it, some so badly damaged that they needed disability payments. At least one of my female friends suffered for years, being told by doctors that she was mental. She began drinking more and more alcohol due to pain and eventually this affected her mind. Then she was OK'ed for disability based upon mental illness. Instead of even acknowledging a suffering person, by all means, tell them they are crazy, make sure to drive them crazy and then feel good about allowing them disability on a diagnosis of mental illness! [Sarcasm intended!!!] @@flagmichael

Great to hear this relatively old theory (viral persistence) is finally being examined seriously. After spending the summer touring (slowly) around central Europe, I've found my anger again. I want a treatment for this bloody thing. I'm tired, and tired of being tired, and just plain angry and we're being essentially forgotten. As for losing Dr Khan's part - if all parties are able to record locally then if it fails on one end you can always courier the recording across on a hard drive. (May not work when having guests.) Thanks for all your work over the last couple of years - you've been a ray of hope. It's a real joy to see how your recovery has come along, as with many of us we're still not at 100% but it's not as dark as it looked a while back.

I am not a Long Covid sufferer but it didn't take me long to recognize how serious this problem is. A close co-worker had chronic Epstein-Barr virus infection and I have known people with fibromyalgia. In each case too many doctors dismissed their complaints as having no medical basis. Now we have this virus that may have long term holds on a very significant part of the population, and it *still* is not a top priority. Sometimes I feel we are all caught in the plot of some poorly written novel... who would believe we would ever be so unresponsive?

I am ill (sore throat, headache, elevated temperature) but I feel GREAT in comparison!!! The first time in >3,5 years I have no muscle pain, no nerve pain.... My smelling and tasting is a lot better (every doctor had said to me "the nerve damage lasts too long, don't have hope it will get better, accept it will never return". It HAS to be Paxlovid or my immune system get's with the reinfection something finally right. I'm hoping so bad, that this good developement will persist without Paxlovid...

An article in the Cleveland Clinic Heath Library entitled “Epstein-Barr Virus” states: “Epstein-Barr virus is very common. In the U.S, an estimated 50% of all children up to 5 years of age and about 95% of adults experience an EBV infection in their lifetime.” “Once you get the infection, it will live in your body in a dormant (sleeping or inactive) state. Certain events can trigger EBV to wake up (reactivate) and make it contagious to others, potentially causing symptoms in the host. Events that trigger EBV reactivation include: - Stress. - Weak immune system. - Menopause or hormone changes.” “Symptoms range in severity for each person diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus. Symptoms include: - Sore throat and throat inflammation (swelling). - Fatigue or feeling extremely tired. - Fever. - Swollen lymph nodes (a bean-shaped organ in your neck). - Rashes on your skin. - Enlarged spleen and liver.” This is just ONE other virus. The fact that it exists in a dormant state in 95% of the World’s Population shows the extent of the problem. I believe CHRONIC STRESS is one of the most important factors as to why people develop Long COVID, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Lyme Disease, MCAS, and POTS. Eliminating the Chronic Stress root cause is required for treatment of these diseases. Getting out in the sunlight is good advice. In addition to providing Near Infrared Radiation, getting outside is a good Stress Reliever. If the Long COVID patient has reached the point where some movement is also possible, the mild exercise, such as a walk in Nature, may help improve Sleep, further reducing Stress.

KZbin hates external links, even to prestigious sources, but I found a Mayo Clinic Proceedings paper titled "Prevalence, Incidence, and Classification of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Olmsted County, Minnesota, as Estimated Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project". The paper reported (in part): "Studies from 1993 through 1999 reported prevalences of 0.004% to 0.56%, whereas more recent studies have reported prevalence rates of 0.24% to 2.6%." That is, ME/CFS is between 6 and 60 times greater in the study area than it was pre-COVID. By the same token, we could expect at least five out of six cases of chronic fatigue syndrome to be the ultimate product of COVID infection. I realize this is a tough nut to crack, but institutionally we are not trying very hard. To find the paper try googling the quotation. When I do that it appears as the third link.

@@RUNDMC1 I won't bore you with my backstory but in a nutshell I'm old school with ME. I'm in the UK, like you and know that help for us can be...lacking?! Nowadays of the mind that if we were to develop something like MS or Parkinson's we'd have to come to terms with it. That's not to say we can't do everything in our power to feel better and even improve. But the amount of internal frustration that we can experience from letting ourselves down, letting others down etc is exhausting in-and-of-itself. I tend to believe my mind is like a see-saw, one side is full out war with this condition, the other is total apathy. I aim for a middle ground where I'm actively taking steps toward betterment but also accepting this step is where I'm at, right now. Knowing there's others, like you mentioned, that are getting better provides that fuel to keep going. Otherwise my see-saw mind would be in the tank! This and keeping a community of understanding folks around makes a difference. Please don't feel obliged to reply if you'd rather not, I don't expect anything from you. :) Just hope you've got a good support network around you. Btw - there's a YTer that I stumbled across that I'm going to reach out to. He has ME, he was bed bound for I think a decade he said. He's an academic, philosophy (right over my head). Also in the UK. He says he's much better now, though not 100%. I'm thinking of asking what, if anything he's done to recover. Happy to share here, with you, the community only if he's comfortable with me doing so. Regardless, I'll give him a heads up about your channel. Who knows what'll come from it, if nothing else a nice chat that may end in an education about Niche, Marxism and moral philosophy?!

Much of what you're saying makes sense. Is there any difference between the viral protein remnants and RNA circulating post acute infection and the way that other viruses can stay in your system such as herpes or chicken pox virus? HIV? In my case, the idea of residual infection languishing in certain tissues makes sense, right from the start of infection, also the inflammation they cause. I still routinely must take aspirin to help breathing sometimes. I know it helps reduce inflammation. Thanks and appreciation - please keep me posted on any updates.

@@Seagoatsunday l got Paxlovid as a prescription here in Germany. I then applied the microdisis preparation which consists in making drops only from one daily dosis with water and alcohol, then you take the drops on the tongue several times a day. This way you only have the advantages of a drug without any side effects. You can do that with almost all chemical drugs out there. Only the desired effects and no unpleasant ones, if you have an allergy you would also have it with microdosis. But of course not approved by medical mainstream or big pharma. The genius Dr. Eugenio Martinez Bravo did not get any medal from pharma industry nether the medical system although he studied and applied it for almost 30 years, and quite a lot of studies were done by him and other doctors. But that could be the future. Google for his book or a more recent one from two Italian doctors, Marco Santello and Marcella Saponaro, there is a free pdf of Dr. Bravo’s book, but only in Spanish, amd the other one can be found in Italian also on Amazon Italy. But this is not a recommendation for anybody, l am trying this on my own because l don‘t want to wait for trial results in one or two years, my life is short and precious. I remember in the 1980s Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was a leper (so to speak) in medical practice. No diagnostic test, no effective treatment. Fibromyalgia was widely regarded as a hoax. Compared to those days, we are moving at blinding speed toward Long Covid (and hopefully ME/CFS) treatment.

How much longer are these Paxlovid trials going to go on? I heard that some of the patients stopped going once the care providers stopped masking (which is INSANE... how could you guys allow that). When might there be enough data to draw any conclusions about Paxlovid's effect on the "flavor" of LC that appears to stem from viral persistence?

That’s a complex situation - that trial is still ongoing

This is really interesting to me because I've noticed a pattern in my LC symptoms. I can have months of feeling 100%, LC symptoms will return (luckily not as bad as post March 2020) but enough to effect my day-to-day existence and as a result of reinfection, overdoing it, exercise that involves my neck(?) etc. I'll return to acupuncture and within 48 hours will come down with flu/cold symptoms eg sore throat, blocked nose, aching etc until it clears again and ongoing acupuncture helps to clear that latest bout of LC. The last time my acupuncturist commented "it can't be lingering virus surely?" but I'm now wondering if the acupuncture helps release the residual virus? Anyone with similar experience?

As someone who has recovered, I don’t think the viral persistence Avenue is helping people with what I believe is a nervous system disorder.

The suggestion is that SOME suffer from viral persistence and will be a big part of the puzzle for them. It may not have been for you! The nervous system definitely implicated in all cases IMO

@@RUNDMC1 Not for me to say if viral persistence is the cause of some LC. I’m by no means an expert. My only concern is that putting the idea in peoples heads that they have secret viral reservoirs of replicating live virus may be contributing to their anxiety and driving their nervous system disorder. I found recovery came very quickly for me once I abandoned the worry that there was some damage in my body from Covid not showing up on blood or imaging tests. To me, the nervous system dysautonomia hypothesis made the most sense, and by working that angle, I recovered. But I don’t know what other people are experiencing or their physiology. Maybe some people do have reactivated EBV, HSV, or viral persistence. I wish everyone recovery.

It seems that you appear to enjoy your own voicess... oh marketing long covid handbook. Why not just makes these 20 seconds Long. Instead of having her expound on all the theoretical nonsense that leaves us lost, just say. "Do you know anything for certain yet?. She can say no, and we can go on with our day. 20 seconds max. And I'm a scientist. I hear nothing. The tital is how we treat viral persistence. If that question was answered in the 11:30 seconds I missed it.

If you’re a scientist you’ll know that the answer to a question is often more questions. But they have to be asked or you’ll never find the answer. We’re not at the stage of ‘here’s the name of your drug your GP will give you’. If we were there’d be no point in making these videos.

Thanks Gez for your continued videos! I haven’t been here in a while cuz I’m at the “This is my new normal” stage of life I guess. Mine is just inflammatory markers which give me shortness of breath. I just have to pace myself. I know there are those who are way worse. ☹️ But I’ll check these videos out and still praying for a breakthrough in our long covid journey. You’ve truly been a lifeline and just a huge emotional help to me and many others I’m sure! 👏🫶
