"Stay strapped or get clapped" will help with getting spooked. And a small efficient heating blanket would work wonders for that small a bed space.

Usually my wife and I go camping or I’m with a group. I’ve been solo camping exactly once. No fire. I’m a grown dude and a rather large one at that. Once the sun went down I didn’t know what to do lol. The wind blew hard all night so I kept hearing twigs snap etc..I was Scared shitless. Slept with a hammer next to me. I think being spooked while camping solo is natural and it’s just a matter of getting out and doing it more. Having a fire is a huge help and totally changes the vibe. Glad y’all stuck it out!

Just a thought that I would like to share from when I was camping in my Tacoma. it would be easy for someone to open the top of your topper from the outside while you are in there sleeping. So you might want to find a way to lock the topper door from the inside. It left me feeling pretty vulnerable.

Hey Emma , have you ever considered buying a little piece of property in the woods near where your parents live. Have one of your brothers tow a fifth wheel camper that you could remodel make it home or home base. A peaceful setting to live, but have the truck to travel as you please. Here is a idea for the back of your truck. Find someone to build you a Aluminum insulated camper shell that you can actually sit up in. Have the floor higher than the truck bed to make 3 Hugh rolling out drawers with supplies for camping. There are screened in areas you can attach to the back of your truck that you can use for sitting, entertaining friends that come with you or meet you there ,mosquito free. Dressing room, compost potty . Bring plenty of airwick spray. How do you feel about a Aussie or German Shepherd dog as a companion and guard. A home base will give stability and your truck to explore. You will have a place to come back to that you can dream upon ,create your own style on the grounds. Come up with your own look that no one has. Heck your Dad and Mom can get a small camper to come camp on your property and make your own family experience. Creativity keeps your mind sharp and young.. Every time you read something from me,your thinking ,O God what kooky idea is he sending me now ! I have learned to think outside the box and enjoy life better and do things way out there if I choose. Same oh,same oh is so boring. Thinking outside the box gives me more area to spread my idea wings. I have amazed myself.

I have a heated blanket and it really makes a difference! And I totally get spooked too. I find that having an audiobook going at night helps me from being paranoid about the quiet and maybe helps deter animals that generally stay away from human voices? I also have one of those personal alarms as a just in case thing and I find sleeping with that next to me gives me comfort ❤

About the solo stoves. They don't recommend that you extinguish with water- you can warp the steel. I have a full sized version and if it's still lit when I want to go to bed, I cover it with a galvanised trash can lid but you can also used a steel mesh to prevent sparks escaping.

For the curtains on the side windows. Use bungee cord for the "rods" Then you can use a loop of cloth as the curtain. Reflective bubble insulation then can be slipped inside the loop. I made my cloth loops with a light side and a dark side. The light side was a fun patterned cloth, and the dark side was theatrical blackout cloth. I'd camped and hiked lots with the parents, even in bear country, as I grew up, so I was well seasoned camper. I still was a weenie on my first few wilderness camping trips. We were going to canoe camp on an Island on the Canadian side of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. I didn't like the food hanging spot, and the campsite was too open feeling. As we were setting up camp, we saw both bears and wolves on the far lake shore, and they looked at us. They can swim, and I knew that. I couldn't take it. I wanted out of there. After a few nights, and uneventful bear visits to our campsites, I eventually got used to it. I eventually got to the point where I would do camping in just a bivi sack, no tent even, in grizzly country. Sadly, my ME/CFS no longer allows me to hike into the wilderness. So now I camp out of the back of my car.

Fantastic build! Nice job on the hatch! Bet dad's proud too! You did so much with so little $$. Solo stove : bulky/expensive. Might consider a cheaper folding firepit that takes little room and can also grill food. truck : Tundra is a nice reliable truck with 6' bed. Why is the bed so wide? It's just you.. A cot sleeps better plus space under to store containers of stuff. You could easily cover the topper inside with acoustic grey carpet. A clothing rod in the truck cab helps with clothes storage, & backseat area is where my fridge lives. Get yourself an emergency starting battery, Noco or the like, since you're often out in the sticks alone. They're small and saved my bacon. Or put it on your Christmas list!! Just please use eye n breathing protection...fiberglass dust and paint are poisonous and bad for your lungs and eyes. It really takes very little to get out there and experience nature, truck campers are great for little escapes! blessings

I think your camper door is great. Yeah the inside could look a bit better but you can fix that. One thing that I'd suggest is to caulk around the window to make sure that water doesn't drip down between the glass and wood. That will keep it looking good and prevent mildew from forming under there which currently you can see from the inside. Great video though Emma.

Hey Emma.. very entertaining trip out in the woods.. Just thought Id mention I have a fire pit which is just a bigger version of your little solo stove (I think that's what you called it).. That should simply work with wood/twigs .. Mine is the exact same design but bigger and was sold as a smokeless fire pit and yes its pretty much smokeless.. They are actually also quite efficient as the holes at the top suck the smoke in and sort of re use it .. any way.. I wouldn't be bothered buying fuel for it, just add small twigs and see how it goes...

Fyi... what I learned from tent camping.. bedding gets damp (period!) So I would bring my electric blanket and of course be by an electric outlet somewhere using an extention cord. But if you have a power source with you and can use 110 (house voltage) or invest in a 12volt electric blanket. Totally worth it!! 😊

Yep I hate it. My wife and I have taken a road trip to Florida camping for couple weeks in Feb. For about the last 5yrs. Used a tent for 3yrs. 35-40⁰ up to 85⁰ days of rain about every year. Now we use my insulated cargo trailer, with Lithium battery, solar, heat. Packup takes maybe 2min, we can drive then Park climb in and and sleep. More fuel but so convenient and comfortable especially days it's 45-55 degrees. Sitting outside for hours is chilly and uncomfortable

Gurrl, those bottled waters are addictive!! Buy foam insulation and glue it to your topper. 3M spray glue worked well for me on fiberglass. Then get some outdoor carpet and glue that to it. Then get the REFLECTIX role and make window coverings and that will trap in a ton of heat. And help block the heat during the summer.

Do you still have the Monkey? That truck bed camper is going to get very cramped, even for just one person. You might consider getting a teardrop trailer to sleep/live in, and using the truck bed camper for all your kitchen, fridge, storage needs. A pop-up canopy could be very useful whether you have a teardrop trailer or not. It’s nice to have a covered outdoor space. We recently bought a 5lb refillable propane tank to keep from using those green cans of propane that can’t be recycled. There are obviously a lot of logistics and details to be worked out. Wishing you well, and Happy Camping!

Yes, those Clearly Canadian waters are addictive! I used to love them back in the 90s but never see them around anymore, here in Canda! Probably best -- they're as bad as any soda, just more addictive. I would try and add some reflectix to the camper shell. Get a 12v electric blanket, maybe turn the platform into a single bed and possibly use a heater of some sort. If you use a Mr Buddy heater u must crack a window. It’s a cute little set up. At least u can climb through the back to the cab and take off if your safety was ever threatened. I worry about your back door on the cap. Not sure if you can lock it from the inside but please add something on it for your safety. Have fun with it. Looks great 😊 Also, use wool blankets on the outer layer. They do not wick moisture from the air.

Have you thought about getting a full sized truck an a slide in truck camper? I had that setup about 20 years ago. I didn't live out of it but could have. Big enough to live in in bad weather, with a heater, but small enough to encourage you to be outside most of the time. Or maybe pull a canned ham trailer behind the truck you have. You can build a foamy canned ham pretty cheap that is light enough it can be pulled by any car. An its secure from most things that cant walk on 2 legs. Also very warm. Just throwing ideas at you.
