The moral of the story is, always love your children equally just in case you can reap the benefits of their success later in life. Not to be a decent person and, you know, _not_ ruin someone's life, or for a mutually beneficial fulfilling relationship full of love and appreciation which will carry over into elder years so you're not alone in the last leagues of your life, but just in case you can exploit their material successes in the future. Only good reason, obviously.

@@deyedrah not necessarily. From what I've read, in families with a narcissist parent, there's usually a "scapegoat" child and a "Golden Child." The scapegoat is typically the oldest and is blamed for a great deal of what goes wrong in the narcissist's life. If/when the scapegoat moves away, the Golden Child is suddenly the only one left to be the target of the narcissist's fury/apathy.

We're not really sure if she's a narcissist (she has similar behavior but it could be because she repeats her father patterns without herself being a narcissist) but yeah I was the "scapegoat" and my brother the "Golden Child". Which is extremely isolating because I resented him all my life for it and he would generally avoid being associated with me so he could keep his golden child status. We're working on our relationship now that we're away from her but it's weird and awkward. I'm the youngest tho but my mother was the oldest.
