An issue presently with this is that leaving the single market, the customs union, scraping all legislation passed whilst members of EU and rushing it all through without proper preparation for the upheaval, wasn't on the ballot. What we've gotten is nothing like what was on the ballot. Not only should there have been more referendums, to cover all the changes, but a greater majority should have been required to ensure that a simple 1% shift wouldn't change how the vote(s) would have gone, given the significance. Personally, I never expected it to be followed through on as it was a non-binding vote and would be hugely costly for most of the wealthiest people with influence.

As one caller said, a referendum on such a major issue should not have been decided on such a slim majority. I think we were conned: I seem to remember that it was an advisory referendum, but the government then decided that it would be undemocratic not to act on the result. If it had been tagged as binding from the start, I expect a certain majority would have been required. To effect such a major constitutional change on that mandate was the undemocratic move. People voted for Brexit without any idea what that Brexit would look like. Which is why they are still arguing over it.

It's crazy when you consider for a country to JOIN the EU it on average takes a decade. Yet we made such a monumentally heavy decision as to leave on a single vote that was only 2% off of a 50/50 split, that most people who voted to leave had no idea what they were voting for and a lot of people who would have voted remain, not bothering because they either thought it "would never happen" or "wouldn't be decided on a single, close-call vote". Then because the Tories got impatient we rushed out of the EU in just 4 years with very few concrete trade-deals and an economy sinking quicker than the Titanic.

Sometimes when I think of people who voted for this Brexit mess, I admit I can't help but want to be angrily confrontative with them, but hearing stories like these it causes me to breathe deeply and take stock. I'm angry because people believed the lies they were fed by vested interests in business and the Tory client media. Stories like these aren't just infuriating, they're tragic. It's like seeing an old friend turn to drink or drugs; there are still occasional glimpses of their old brilliance, but they're lost... It's never particularly nice to be forcibly educated but it is ultimately necessary and beneficial. If only we could stop repeating our follies over and over again, it's embarrassing and shameful. Also the oter reason we have a cost of living crisis is because we shut down our coal fired power plants, stopped building nuclear and went for inefficient green energy. Regarding the migrant crisis we could stop that tomorrow by getting out of the ECHR which is stopping us from deporting these illegals, which adds up to the fact the tories don't want to deport illegal immigrants.

The proof of the failure of Brexit is in currency rates (before Brexit) 2015 and today. In 2015, it took $1.58 in US dollars to equal 1 British Pound. Today $0.80 US cents equals 1 British Pound. This is something unheard of. The BP has almost dropped 50% in 8 years against the USD. The Euro against the BP always averaged around 1.30 Euro to 1 BP. So of Western economies the Euro ranked highest. Today, 1 US dollar is only 0.90 Euros. It may not have dawned on you guys but Brexit leaders sold you out to America and helped them become the Western economic power that Britain always was. And in exchange for it, America sold Britain the crappiest healthcare service ever. You guys don't know the half. And now with Britain separated from the EU, Britain will depend on the US for almost everything, as the EU upcharges you guys for everything else. Your best move is for rural voters who think like these callers to vote in labor party reps at a local level. Or it's just going to get worst. I feel so bad for you guys. Black folks in America saw this coming for you. But there was too much racism and hatred for anyone to listen. But that's what conservatives do (divide to rule). They lack the ability to rule and use cult politics to do nothing while they rule. When we saw you guys on Brexit, we were like this is not going to end well. Nigel Farage was on US television, selling you guys out to Big business as if your country was for sale. Honestly, why Meghan Markle had to go. Because under no circumstance would she have supported policies that would have allowed your country to bow a knee to America. As Americans, we know America.

Note, I am not asking for ideas post-Brexit or for them to point us to alternative agreements or memberships: What benefits are we enjoying right now? There should also be a couple of EU members giving us their views on what the Union is like without the UK: Is it better off, or not? Would the EU accept us back? Does the EU want us back?! Oh but had remain won, would you have any empathy for those who voted to leave? I rather doubt it. I look and I have to ask: what happened to the France that stood for something of itself? That in spite of the third reich's dominion, strove to defy until it's downfall? That rivaled even Britain in its success over the centuries? I say this as someone who admires self determination and respects self improvement, but France much like the rest of the EU members have now deluded themselves into manipulation - you've lost themselves and are losing your country: you're eating out of the palm of someone's hand like domesticated cattle, oblivious that one day the shepherd is going to start eating the herd. I voted to Leave on a number of principals; none of which I had to be "mislead" by others as that berk Verhofstadt would love to claim in his obsession with a United States of Europe; I want my nation's self respect back! And in that pursuit, just like in France and in others - the Uk still finds it's feet weighted down by the careerists opportunists who would rather remain in that failed bloc so that their bank balance can be bloated without any accountability or responsibility.

A referendum as an instrument for democracy, requires a smart, well informed electorate. The last never being the case inevitably leads to only one conclusion: never hold a referendum, certainly not on important complex issues.

It also requires well defined options. And for their not to have been several serious breaches of electoral law byvone side.

Australia has referendums every 20 years or so, the questions are prepared carefully, the debate is controlled, the run-up is long (2 years?) and the result for change has to be a super-majority. Almost always the answer is 'no change'.

I suggest a meritocracy, no democracy. Likewise if you choose the most popular man/woman to operate on you in a hospital, likewise the handsome gardener would be voted by popular voting to be the doctor in charge, just because of his/her looks and charisma and popularity....not because if the person in charge is qualified to do so.

That must have to exclude graduates from thick universities who can’t tell you what their gender is 😂😂

that's the very reason why referenda are quite dangerous....
