Gidday Mate! Funny thing is I bought me a leatherman signal on Boxing Day! I had a couple of gift vouchers so went in to the shop and got me one. I have ordered a bit kit as well. Haven’t had a leatherman for years and I do like this one. Happy New Year mate 🇺🇸 🇳🇿

For the first month or so I thought the whole thing was a bit gimmicky particularly the plastic bits but it’s proven itself to be true Leatherman quality, holding up quite nicely with daily use. Great evaluation. If they come out with your version, I'm buying it. I prefer a knife be a knife but there is no denying the versatility of a multi-tool. Now I need to check your catalog for a video on the use of a crook knife.

I’m with you on the knife being a knife mate. I’ve always relegated my multi tool blades to chores that I didn’t want my other knives to go through. I’m going to shift that paradigm for a while and give this little fella a lot more work and see how it goes. In fact, I’m planning on giving this little tool a run and figure out just how much freedom it offers. As much carving as you do I find it amazing that you don’t use a crooked knife. Definitely a testament to your skill at carving. They’re blades with a long history and a heck of a lot of usefulness in the bush. If you pick one up let me know your thoughts about it. @@jimbriggs3065 I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the multi-tool experience as I know they will be genuine and not gleaned from the advertisements. I have the Wave+ and it has proven to be a step saver, especially when I'm in a remote location. I appreciate your refreshingly real reflections on wilderness ways. Carving is a new endeavor so my explorations haven't yet led beyond a pocket knife. I do like the idea that a crooked knife could expand those capabilities, perhaps significantly by what I've been made aware of my you and now others.

Thanks for showing the comparison between the blade thicknesses. From the photos I had suspected that the Signal had a much thicker blade than other Leathermans but without seeing them side by side it's hard to tell. I suspect they made the Signal blade so thick so that you can baton with it and the blade wont bend. I ordered a Signal a couple of days ago and it should be here today. Looking forward to seeing it in person and taking it out on some adventures.

@@jimbriggs3065 What kind of upgrades would you do? I have seen that you can get aftermarket parts two swap the sharpener for an extra bit holder which would be handy. Also if it was up to me I would swap the can opener for a prybar with file on the side and could still keep the wire stripper on it too. Pry bars are always handy whereas can openers are almost obsolete, especially with the freeze dried hiking foods we have these days.

@The.JZA. For me, I wouldn’t swap the diamond hone out but make it twice the size. Same with the ferro rod, it needs to be bigger. I’ve made around 25 fires with it so far (one in bad conditions which ate up a lot of it) and I maybe have 25 more depending on conditions. Totally agree with you about the can opener! A pry bar/file’s a great idea but personally I’d like to see a crooked knife replace it. Finally, I’d like to see it with scissors. I’m not sure how they could fit that in without changing the profile which I quite like. Cheers mate!!!

@@jimbriggs3065 Agreed. Good ideas all around. I have heard that you can separate the two halves of the whistle and then turn the ferro rod around to get some more life out of it. Hopefully it's not too expensive to replace once it's worn out.

Leathermans have been my multitool of choice since a lovely young lady in our marketing department gave me one, suitably embossed. I rarely carry mine except on big journeys, relying day to day on an SAK. But, that said, were I to be thrust willingly or otherwise into a genuine wilderness experience I expect the Leatherman would be somewhere upon my person. True confession I have in all my years worn out or rendered unusable maybe one or two Ferro rods and I certainly don't subscribe to the 8" "of course I am not compensating for something mate" ferro rod fetish but I would like a bit more than that for "that's my wallop, when its gone its gone"carry. Glad to see your old-self re-emerging there. You have much to answer for - after years of resisting I am now the proud owner of a silky saw, though nothing as ostentatious as yours. Happy New Year my friend - it going to be great, I am sure!

A different frame seems to me to be an improvement- something like an enlarged Skeletool with tuck-in ferro and diamond rods (like a larger version of Victorinox scale tools- a saw and maybe a serrated blade--and "back tools" like an awl. But a reduced toolset, maybe a better blade steel, titanium frame? I dunno- I think the basic PST derivative symmetrical pliers multitool isn't an ideal platform for the purpose? ATM i prefer SAKs with ferro rods- lighter, the big ones have much better saws...
