Hi Pat, I've been learning diatonic for almost a year now, and after watching some of your videos, I'm gonna get a hohner echo 48 for a more fuller sound. Being an old school 60 year old geezer, It's like a breath of fresh air to see someone like you who is open to all kinds of stuff and blows away the cobwebs of acceptability without even glancing at them. Would love to get stoned with ya and have some larfs, Big luv from London, SUBSCRIBED.

Awww cheers brother! I’m so glad man! The echo 48 is a great harp. I love the bare bones Hohner tremolo harps cause they aren’t much bigger than a diatonic, and have that warm sweet Hohner tremolo that no other brand I’ve played . I have a beautiful Seydel tremolo Sailor model in the key of D that Patrick Keelan (one of the folks who watches me very generously sent me) that has a lovely tremolo effect but it’s less of a warm sound as the reeds are steel. If you’re going to get into tremolo harp I highly recommend Seydel as they make fantastic instruments but Hohner does have that amazing warm bell brass tone.

I just revisited my MM yesterday because it was the only harp I own that worked with "St. James Infirmary Blues" and it worked quite well thank you. It seems to be the got to for Jazz/Blues (minor keys) and first position playing instead of third position which I cannot claim to have developed any skills. I had hoped this video would give me some more clues about its use but I think you were too stoned to say anything. Been there, done that. It was nice to see someone even mention that harp. Thanks

78tag nice that you like the MM…I play st. James in third position chromatic. Tbh I’m still figuring this litte MM out…I likely was very stoned but my lack of information and personal know how about this tuning, as I had just acquired it recently at that point were more to blame lol Thanks for the comment! Be well!

I don’t like Lee Oskar harps that much, but I bought a melody maker in C just to play “In the mood” comfortably, without the need for overblowing to get that major 7th 😁

I really can’t stand Lee Oskars. Tombo makes lots of good stuff tho. I have a melody maker and I can’t get it to sound dirty at all. So I don’t play it much.

Pat, I use the Lee Oskar’s MM’s for melody playing. They are great! Instead of the gritty Dominant 7th note, Lee Oskar changes that note to the Major 7th. A more beautiful melodic note. I use the E melody maker and G melody maker in “Ooh Child”. I’ll post it for you.
@keelanp53
@keelanp53 3 жыл бұрын
Also, the draw is the major 7th chord where as the blow is the relative minor chord. For the E melody maker, the draw plays E maj7, whereas the blow plays F# min7.

Ok cool! Thanks for the information man! I never really jived with this harp…from what I thought it was going to be tuned like a slide less chromatic . I was wrong lol but I pull this down and try to work it now and then. Thanks Patrick! I’m glad to know you use them! Looking forward to the song!

Nice, thank you. I have a MM in G and I like it. I occasionally use it to play melodies, like show tunes, jazz tunes, etc. I'd like to get one in C as well.

@@dirtypatwalsh One question: Why do you like Marine Bands so much?
@dirtypatwalsh
@dirtypatwalsh 4 жыл бұрын
@@dovlandzbaum5036 it's just the brand I've used most my life. I started playing in 1979 and that was the best option in my opinion. I love the marine band sound...it just feels comfortable to me 😀 I even have a tattoo on my right forearm of the little portrait on the cover plate (tho much bigger on my arm). They just feel the best for what I do.

@@dirtypatwalsh Thanks, Pat! I think I'm going to get one in A and probably Bb. I've played Blues Harps for the past 11-and-a-half years and I assume that Marine Bands are not vastly different, especially in terms of bendability. I got a Manji and it fights me...too hard to play so I just leave it in the box.
@dirtypatwalsh
@dirtypatwalsh 4 жыл бұрын
@@dovlandzbaum5036 I personally do like the Suzuki line, especially the Manju, but ya kinda tough to break in. I think you will like marine bands, I would figure you are playing ms series blues harps, and marine bands are easier to play IMO. The blues harps available in the 70/80s were totally different. Bb is my personal favorite key...I hope you like them! 😀

I got 12 Lee oscar minor harps bought 2005. they just put the chord (i see harmonicas as a 2 chord sandwich )in a different rotation of voicing. They are still for sale it seems. THe minor harps puts the 5th chord of major more mid position and sounds more rock and roll in ascending 1-4-5 whereas major harps to me sound 5-1-4 ( in my rough estimation) . The minor harps by proportion of notes use less 7th intervals of major in the voicing/tuning. Same ingredient notes but in such a way that it sings a slightly different tune. I bought them to put in a rack to chase my guitar around. I shelved them for years because real life got in the way and i didnt have my own space to play them. My dad died of cancer 3 years ago and i was going through his stuff recently and found he had 4 hohner major harps and i got playing them while i was sleeping in a garage. I am not a strong player but intuitive enough to find my way around because while living in monk like silence, (i became an avid book reader), i studied music theory in my own silent time by just reading about it so i would know what to do when life reunited me with my instruments. My dads harps were barely played because he was ill when he started and soon didnt have the breath to blow them, they are like as new. A guy from his shooting club was a harp player that gave him the idea, my mum promised to give them to him, but he turned out to be a wanker in my estimation and we stopped contact and so i keep them. I think it was captain beefheart that inspired me to buy mine more than bob dylan.
@dirtypatwalsh
@dirtypatwalsh 2 жыл бұрын
That’s quite a story man! I know so little about music theory it’s almost embarrassing lol. This particular harp I like…never really use. I’m sorry to hear about your dad man. I’m glad you got his harps tho! I’m also glad that life is reuniting you with your instruments! Also, Captain Beefheart is a noble reason to start playing harmonica!😀

@@dirtypatwalsh Your a natural musician, i was a late starter at 27 (and a later smoker), . I found it difficult to develop that coordination memory magic that other musicians can do. Its sort of like good balance ,some have it and others need a rail to cling to, theory steered me in the right direction where i made less mistakes, i got one of those minds that asks questions too much to demystify what i find mysterious. Some musicians are born and others like me have to kind of download a program of understanding to make up for my deficiency, i think i play by eye more than by ear lol.

I understand completely! My roommate is a musician with a diploma from the finest music school in Canada but he can’t just find a groove without sheet music…different strokes for different folks an all. I have a small learning disability as well that makes sheet music really hard to get a grip on when I can just feel it naturally. Music is so cool lol😎👍

I have both Bluesmaster and Promaster...... and they are outstanding harps! I also have some assorted Kongsheng harps and they’re excellent as well - but Lee Oskar’s are excellent for customising; I’ve never had to rework any Suzuki....

@@rebeccaabraham8652 ya those are both great inexpensive harps for real! Never came across Kongsheng before...and yes I would agree Rebecca, Lee Oskar's are good for customization. Easy harps to maintain, but I agree on Suzuki as well,.never had to touch em. Blues master and Harp master are both great. The Harp master reminds me of an old special 20. Thanks for your comment!
