I have returned here to the sacred shrine of pan music once more. Where I pay homage to the souls that went before. They may be gone but their memories are eternal. This is a great artform.

No one can tell the story of Lavantille quite like Clive Bradley. Just as Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton's music embodied the new multi-faceted culture of New Orleans at the turn of the 20th century. And in the same way that Bob Marley and the Wailers used their revolutionary brand of music to highlight the political and social conditions of the slums that nurtured their world view. Which in turn captured the hearts minds and imagination of their worshipping fans. In the same way Bradley expanded the musical vocabulary of the steelband. Which allowed him to speak with distinctly different voices. For instance in his arrangements for Desperadoes his music reflected not only the pain joy suffering and the social and economic anxieties of the community but also its resilience and eternal hope. Even more fascinating he was able to wrapped these emotions which were unique to these communities with the more universal aspects of life that aflict all communities through the ages. And that is the fraility mortality and the transcience of the human consciousness. At other times he was able to invoke a ritualistic approach to the music as he demonstrated in whap coceyea. However he was still able to speak with yet a different voice when arranging for bands in New York. This sound was very Urban and use a different harmonic structure and voicings. You see a yet a different voice again in " one day" which was brighter in texture but remarkable in terms of its creativity. To be conyinued............... As if in the middle of some ancient ritual or festival. Mysteriously handed down through the ages in music and song. What we were experiencing was an interwoven cultural phenomenae that started when the new inhabitants from West Africa interfaced with the western melody and harmony from the various tribes of Euroupe. This resulted in the reinterpretation and bending of western melodic and harmonic structures with an added (poly)rthymic dimension that described their condition in the new world. This gave rise to the many new forms of American music including Jazz and the Blues. Desperadoes was Bradley's laboratory for the further bending and reconstruction of this new world musical phenomenae to tell the story of the Hill people. Hail to you Bradley. May your soul R.I.P.

What more of a genius can you ask for. Jit was my #1 arranger but Bradley seem to be bordering on that scope every time i listen to his music. Bradley left no stone unturned with his melodic passages and chord progressions. The way he structured his arrangements, you don’t have to be a genius to understand. The man has layers of ideas on top of ideas and he was the master of chord substitution. There should of been a class called clive Bradley in schools, just so we can understand how sweet this man Music was on a high pedagogical level. Something that cannot be taught in one day. All the ingredients you can taste in this bouyon. Every single element. Then there were times in the minor i felt like I was inside a transformers movie, darkness and bewilderment floating in my head, like how great was this mans brain.. 😳

The enigmatic Bradley was selfless to the point of being selfish. You'll understand my comment when you listen to some of Von Martin's interviews, digitized and archived for streaming as a special service on Caziq. Look out for views also from Pat Bishop, Ray Holman, Shannon Dudley Andre Walker and Rudolph Charles.

Tic, tic, tic Arithmetic. Tic, tic, tic Cabalistic. The rhythm of Clive Bradley and Desperadoes Steel Orchestra was metronomic, without a hic.

The intrinsic ‘sonic signature’ of members of the Steelpan family is identified solely by note-size and length of the ‘skirt’ of a particular instrument. Thus, although being a gifted mimic, Steelpan ‘voices’ are not easily distinguished when playing speed is increased; beyond a ‘tipping point’ the music becomes cacophonous. This I discovered serendipitously on the night of 27th February 1987 while recording ‘Curry Tabanca’ for Trinidad All Stars. Nevertheless, The Legacy of Clive Bradley - Volume One Disc One - is the world’s first album of Panorama arrangements recorded at ‘coasting speed’, another significant milestone in the timeline of the legendary Desperadoes and Laventille. Congratulations to the new visionary Curtis Edwards!

What a beautiful rendition. I hope to hear more recordings of his masterpieces with this modern recording method. His pieces from other orchestras would be honored to have the same treatment applied. Could 'Sir Clive' be honored in this way?

His mastery of harmony, melody, phrasing, implied rhythms, spacing, together with the use of European music, Jazz, and the blues created a majestic, sublime musical realm that span the spectrum from Sebastien Bach to Theolonious Monk. A musical realm which not only reluctantly celebrates life but asks questions of our existence, as to who we are and why are we here?. Which resonates with Wynton Marsalis's statement that music is a form of meditation...........

Interesting, VERY INTERESTING! Because Bradley was 'light years' ahead of everyone else on this planet does not necessarily mean that he was from another planet. Therefore my hypothesis stands firm...

You could be an Archangel, if not who are you brother? No need to thank me, I'm just a very curious individual who seeks solutions to challenges using 'first principles', hence my general comment one hour ago. Your interpretation of Bradley will trigger many more comments and for this I am grateful. He and I shared a warm friendship from 1988 to 2005 when he embarked for the far side of the river Styx to prepare for the rest of us with the great musicians you mentioned in your dissertation..
