The small set was the first Lego set I ever got a duplicate as a gift. At first I thought "oh no. I already have this one." But then it dawned on me there's no rule against having more than one of the same Lego set. And I've been deep in debt ever since (ok, not really).

I have no memory of these sets, but I found two Dark Forestmen that had been sitting in a box of mixed bricks for over 20 years. Of the two, Gary is my favorite.

3:54 that catapult totally works, I had this set when I was a kid and it blew my mind. You put a one by one cylinder brick on the end and physically bend the plastic of the ladder and then release it so that it bounces back and b'doings the brick really far. It's amazing.
@RobrickLego Жыл бұрын
Probably why i couldn't get it to work! Bending plastic is a two word horror story for me 😬

@@RobrickLego haha all it takes is a few milimeters, try it! now that I think about it those ladder pieces might actually be a more flexible material than the standard bricks.

3:47 this is something I feel modern LEGO kind of lacks - function balancing with form. As I build back and forth between eras, I realize that modern LEGO goes for more show than play opportunities. Oh sure this wagon may look mundane by today's standards, and a lower parts count than a modern Castle cart (*coughs*), but there's more you can do within this simple model. The undercarriage storage genuinely shocked me and intrigues me! Just found your channel, thanks for this review entirely of this theme, and earned a sub! Looking forward to watching more!

agreed. When i came back to collect "newer" lego castle sets, i was really confused on why they made carriages without moveable front axle. It's fine for minifig cars but with a horse buggy, you would want to create a carriage that actually "follows" the horse, wouldnt you? :D

3:56 it doesn't function well, but it does function. I had to learn this with the Studios and Alpha Team lines which used a similar ladder-based catapult. The ladder on top can pull back and fling a minifigure standing nearby. I had a set from Studios like that when I was 6, and I didn't figure out the play function until 2015, when I was 20 years old as in the Alpha Team version.

I never had these sets or knew they existed, but I had the minifigs, horse and cart and some of those structure bricks. It's cool to see how my imagination basicly made the same kinds stories these sets portrayed.

3:00 this reminds me of how the torches in Knights Kingdom I were built the same way, with a different base color. Topped with the Lion crest on one faction matching King Leo's legion and the Bull Knights derived from the Dark Forest in some publications, it leads me to further believe Knights Kingdom I was a sort of continuation or revival of the Royal Knights/Dark Forest castle themes.

Back when I was a kid in the 90s, I had no clue how rare these Dark Forest sets really were. The only one I had was 6024 (I still have that set in the box). Once I discovered eBay in the early 2000s, my collecting habits changed. I almost exclusively bought "vintage" sets (mainly 80s to 90s) that I had either missed out on or my parents couldn't afford, but I didn't go after Dark Forest until much later. Somehow I managed to get the other two sets boxed (I now don't care much about boxes, I just want the sets...). It's definitely easier to acquire these sets without the boxes, because I now own multiple copies of them.

Living in the UK as a kid in the 90s I can say these sets were really not shown. I had no idea they existed until I looked back on the sets in my later years, long after they were discontinued. I would have loved them though as they are great. But in fairness I have a decent collection of forestmen (including the river fortress) and all the wolfpack sets so I could just mix the two anyway as I feel dark forest is a middleman between the two factions anyway. What I do love about the classic castle sets is that they would often have three or more factions fighting in out at the same time. Crusaders, black falcons and forestmen then wolfpack, black knights and lion knights (crusaders again) then royal knights, Dragon masters, fright knights and dark forest.... We really don't see this approach anymore as most themes have two factions only these days. I feel like classic castle was set in land full of factions gaining and losing power as the decades go by with some factions intermingling and evolving, new ones arriving and other leaving never to return.
@RobrickLego Жыл бұрын
Yeah having multiple factions and not just the good guys and the bad guys made it so much more exciting!

I got those guys from the first set second-hand. Brown haired lad had part of the paint of his mouth flaked off, so he had a skin flap of his center lips fused together, and the green tunic was missing like a quarter of the back of it and wouldn't hold in an arm. So annoying, I'd have loved a working version of the green tunic. I've got a few Forestmen minifigures now, which I paid of course an embarassing amount of money to get second-hand and love having.
