As rich, white business owners monopolize newly-available marijuana licenses, states continue to arrest people of color for cannabis crimes, even after it’s legal. This leads Hasan to ask: if cannabis can’t be legalized fairly, should it be legalized at all?

My parents immigrated here with very little money. I lived in an appt till i went to college. And now im doing really well for myself. If you haven’t succeeded in life either you didn’t work hard enough, or you work hard in something stupid. As long as you major in stem you will be fine in life. Also dont get arrested for doing dumb shit and dont have a kid under 25. It’s that easy.

Exactly! Release all prisoners in jail now for any non violent drug charges. Better yet, all marijuana should be grown by minorites, just like Native Americans can only operate casinos. But lets be honest. The only reason weed was made legal is because people from corporate america saw a way to mske money off the weed strains made popular by the little guy. Im so disgusted at yet another win for the rich 1% just getting richer off the backs of minorities. Buy your weed from a local dealer. Good for those two black dudes at the end who smelled a shitty deal was being offered to them.

Decriminilization is usually one step below legalization. What is happening now is not legalization bit in fact decriminilization. States are saying it is still illegal(because that is not up to them but the federal government), but we wont arrest you for it (decriminilized). You still cant use the same lanes as many other industries because it is illegal. So legalization would in fact be the way to go but ofc that is only the first step. Good regulation etc should come next (or rather in one package). Hyper criminilization of everything (incl drugs) is more of a policing / justice system (aka "tough on crime") issue that definetely should be adressed as well tho.

That would be a great idea as long as those who apply follow health regulations. I think it has gone down hill for small home growers because they will sell anything when they are desperate enough. You can’t smoke moldy weed and if your 30 plants all have mold and you exhausted your funds or counting on this harvest to get you through this year....... you will sell moldy weed to everyone because you feel your life is in jeopardy because all your crop is destroyed this is why I think the small time growers are not allowed to sell it because it’s so hard for people to follow the regulations when you reach desperate times.

Jorge Noname once my state approved the bill and we got to read it, I realized how bad of a deal we got. We have regulated capitalism in this country. The gov is supposed to regulate business, in order to allow small companies to start up and compete. This causes the economy to flourish. Instead, they do the opposite. They prevent small business from starting, try and give pot rights to the pharma crooks, so that they may inflate prices and take our spare $$$ to fill their billion dollar bank acounts, leaving us with less purchase power and further slowing other businesses.

Yes. TBH, go to Oregon. They fucked up and made it WAY too easy to get a license when they first passed so now they have a massive surplus of weed and it is cheap. But there are dispensaries all over the place that are legit small local spots. Their market has its own issues but at least there is diversity and the consumer benefits.

capitalism. find a good or service to provide and people will buy it. if your the first big operation producing the best product the fastest than your gonna rake in that dough fast so of course your gonna have monopoly at first, its only been an industry for a handful of years. though the licensing is bullshit and with all risk of prosecution eliminated weed should be wayyyy cheaper. im 420 blazing it up in canada and our cannabis is handled by the liquor corperations! libs turning pot int big pharma:(

Hope that's a joke. You don't want to do that, they Will bust you. You only need one, yes one, heathy plant for them to make you a felon. Its not worth it, trust me. By the way, they fly helicopters that detect marijuana, and it can detect... even one plant. And... lol, if you have it in your basement, if they think for any reason you are growing, they will just say they got a 911 call about a suspected burglary, or anything else, and just come right in. No warrent, just come right in. Then, after finding the plants, they will "hold" you until they get a judge to issue a warrant. Might still be the best country in the world, but hasn't been the best in a long time. Hope things change.

They call it weed for a reason, it is pretty easy to grow, though it may take a few times to get it down pat - just like any other plant. Know the laws where you are at and figure out what they mean to you and your needs. Just like any law about your way of life, some will be unjust, unfair, and ridiculous.

@@kevinhockman6713 Depends on where you live. Many places allow homegrown now. And even the places that don't have reduced their no-knock attacks. If you are not growing so much to look like you plan to sell, you will not do time. With the caveat that if you are black or brown, some places will nail you no matter what. Racism is very real and very harsh in many places still. We can hope things change or we can make them change.

Great episode, ends with a good question. I'm in Canada, watching us just change our laws in the past few years. I was raised by hippy parents and this is not the dream they had...this legalization is not about freedom or previously unjust laws or systems. It's 100% about capitalism and the rich getting richer, perpetuating inequality. It's, like, the antithesis of the pot culture, man. So sad.
