The locomotive’s are possessed by the Miners who Died. That is why the trains go on runaway.

Hi, it’s me again months later. I had some new thoughts. According to many sources we know the history behind the region of Big Thunder, but not about the railroad itself. If Disney makes a movie about this maybe it will focus more on the trains. Maybe about the miners that possess them.

The reason for the runaway train is slightly different in the comics, one is possessed not by a miner, but someone else. (Not sure if I should reveal spoiler here).
