Welcome to another episode of Dark Souls Lore featuring Havel's journey in Lordran. From fighting the Ancient Dragons, to being a Bishop of the Way of White on behalf of Gwyn, to his role in the plot against the Gods, Havel's lore is one of the most interesting in the game.

Havel's armour always intrigued me. It is so iconic while always feels so bizarre. Like something is wrong with it. Then I understand what was Infront of me all this time. The chains. His hands are chained, his shoulders are chained, his hips area chained. Even in later ages of DS2 and 3 this details always there. Then I remember a nifty item and its peculiar explanation in DS3; Prisoner's Chain : "A prisoner is one who has staked everything on a belief, a proclivity most apparent in the greatest of champions." What this item gives ? Well, 5 Vigor, 5 Endurance, 5 Vitality.

Perhaps you should take another look at the armor then, especially the description. The armor was never worn by Havel himself, only by his warriors. There is more pointing towards Havel being an everlasting dragon than something similar to his warriors.

@@Sylph_C0 I mean if he was an everlasting dragon, it would make sense that he was called "The Rock". Also, it could be called "Havel's Armor" because it's an armor made to resemble his characteristics, or even just because it's the armor that his followers wear. Think of it as in monster hunter, you can wear "Rathalos' Armor", but Rathalos isn't a warrior. And the occult club, well, if it's armor was worn by followers of him, would it be so strange that next to a warrior's armor there's a weapon?

@@Sylph_C0 Exactly as whitedrake6933 says. The armor set explicitly states that Havel's Set was worn by his warriors. Either we care about the item descriptions or we don't and feel free to make up our own "lore". Adding to that, the Havel Knight that we do find and fight in Dark Souls is also wearing Havel's ring. It's item description is: "This ring was named after Havel the Rock, Lord Gwyn's old battlefield compatriot. Havel's men wore the ring to express faith in their leader and to carry a heavier load" And similar in Dark Souls 3. Meaning that there are: 1. Multiple rings 2. They are worn by his knights. Multiple rings definitively means multiple armor sets, which is also consistent with the fact that we find several Havel Knights across the trilogy. With two of them showing up in Dark Souls 2. It makes more sense if Havel's following was some draconic sect considering the fact that they wear equipment coming from dragons and that resemble something rock-like. Reminds me quite a lot of those who collect dragon scales to become more dragon like. "Dragon scale for reinforcing dragon weapons. Peeled from an ancient dragon. A dragon is inseparable from its scales, and the transcendent apostles, who seek the perpetuity of the ancient dragons, have crossed the very end of the earth to seek this invaluable treasure." No matter, pointing out one single Havel Knight and calling him "Havel" is at best hilariously inconsistent with the lore we are given. At worst an intentional omission of known facts to fit the chosen narrative.

On my first playthrough, whenever I collected something from Havel, I put it on! I just loved the idea of being a man, knowing everyone around you is using their faith and intelligence to come up with new kinds of attacks. But you? I can appreciate the hell out of the mindset, don’t get me wrong, but I feel like it’s also unfair to paint Havel as some oaf who only knew how to rely on his strength, he also showed signs of having very high faith. He CREATED two very powerful miracles in order to combat (or rather nullify) magical power. Even if he relied mainly on his strength, to say he completely ignored using his faith on the battlefield is a little too far I feel like. The miracles may not have been his most powerful asset, but they were specifically mentioned to be a part of his arsenal, so his use of them was at least somewhat apparent to the people around him if it survived history as long as it has.

I’ve been playing these games since Demon’s Souls but I always stayed away from lore channels so I could have my own perspective. Some one insisted I watch an old Hawkshaw video about DS and I was blown away. What other lore channels would you recommend? I’ve seen Vaati of course. Great footage and good scripts/voice acting but I’m not crazy about his lore theories sometimes. I’ve seen Smoughtown, very logical and academic. Love his theories but presentation isn’t the focus. Love Sinclair lore for Bloodborne stuff. Just found tarnished archeologist and really like it. Any recommendations from here?

Given that Havel was one of the gods per Great Magic Barrier's japanese description and not a bishop, Gwyn probably shared his soul with him like with the rest of the gods, as stated by Gwyn's soul. Undead Clerics belonging to the Way of White are routinely sent on missions to obtain the Rite of Kindling as a larger part of the dogma the Church proliferates (i.e. linking the flame and ending the curse of undeath). Bonfires are a creation of the Gods in response to Hollowing and were designed to assist the Undead so missions like this became a regular occurrence. The Rite itself is handed down amongst those clerics as per the item's description in-game which means the rite is as old as the Church and was likely a ceremony initiated by Lloyd when he founded it. The Church demonizes Undeath and Hollowing which is why those who are Undead are sent to retrieve the Rite of Kindling in order to atone for this perceived sin. *************************** I understand in your description you say you're not sticking purely to item descriptions, but then my question is which item descriptions are you sticking to and which ones are you excluding for the sake of your story?

I was playing ds1 when I had a sudden realization. The Havel warrior in the watchtower basement is locked away, which you need the watchtower basement key to get to him. Where do you get this key? In the castle after killing the moonlight butterfly. What is the moonlight butterfly? A creation of Seaths. Another task added to the list of jobs for Seaths goons.

I understand this is a more cinematic approach but I still prefer your original “Ash Lake, Havel, and the Plot against the Gods” video to this one. Sure it’s long but it’s worth it, the depth and scope blew me away the first time I watched it. Also, in this video you said “he became a bishop of the Way of White, the Way of Gwyn.” Correct me if I’m wrong (since it’s been a while since I last watched it) but I thought in your original Way of White video you seemed to argue that associating that organization with Gwyn was a misconception or false assumption. Or has something changed?

I herd somewhere that parts of this story occoured before gwyn linked the fire and that gwyn discovered gavels plans He was so sure that he could not stop the rock for good that he stripped him of his armour/weapons and had him imprisoned in the asylum to rot away to the dark sign With what seemed like an eternity Havel eventually lost himself until he was helped out at the start of ds1 and that even though his memories and body faded, his will carried is what carried us through ds1 until we linked the fire I think I prefer this version even if it’s inaccurate. He was the man whose will was so challenging that the gods had to put a stop to him

I was thinking to myself, in ds1 you find the binoculars in the graveyard of the firelink shrine, but they are not ona grave. The corpse that you find them in is laying looking over the undead burg. That means that someone has spied over the burg, or over the rebels in the burg, so is it posible the lords knew about the plot way before. And second the binoculars' description says "This advanced device was built by a famous craftsman of Astora. Its utility is singular, but its applications many. The value of these specs depends greatly on the imagination of their owner." Is it posible that Andre made them or even take part in the sniching on the rebels?

one thing that made me thinking ive seen a video from a channel that analyse japanese text i think its chanel yoshimitsu or something like that and he concluded that havel himself was an ancient dragon. tough it does not contradict everything since dragons like midir and others have been known to be aliied with the gods maybe he was a young dragon taken at birth like midir. but if you think about it it could also explain many things what if the dragon in ash lake is his child she is a fire keeper after all and maybe Pricilla.

I think Havel made it out of Ash Lake, but couldn’t make it back to Anor Londo. I think that he used the dragon scales left from the battle and others gathered from the ancient dragon down there, he made new armour and weapons identical to his old armour. But when he tried to leave Ash Lake, he was caught and imprisoned (probably with difficulty) and then taken to his prison in the tower, where we find him in Undead Burg
