A few clarifications: The dragon in the Beginnings episode was not a spirit, it was just a regular dragon animal. All the original benders were animals (except for the moon, which was the physical form of a spirit), but they lived among the spirits because the spirits only had beef with humans. The water-y thing around the old wooden statue of Wan that Jinora saw was Raava. Mako and Bolin were involved with the Triple Threat Triad when they were younger, before they started their probending gig. Mako mentioned it in the first season when they were looking for Bolin, who had gone missing after doing a high-paying 'delivery' job offered by one of the gang members. It's also why Mako was kind of familiar with the gang members during the sting operation.

Yea but see my question was always if there were more lion turtles with more elements. Maybe they died out but if history turned out different there may gave been way more elements
@StopReadingMyNameOrElse6 жыл бұрын
Ian Kevin I don't need to. I watched the whole series multiple times, they only ever hinted at the existence of them. Not that they were always meant to be the original source for bending. It was never mentioned once for that being the case. Just because they were in a few pictures, and showed up very quickly in Wons library, that absolutely does not equate them to even a hint at being the original source for bending powers. You're reaching.
@StopReadingMyNameOrElse6 жыл бұрын
Ian Kevin I think the lingering issue is that everything was *technically* cohesive, but a lot felt like retcons in *tone*. Raava is the crowning example of this (though hardly the only one). It was an origin that was very carefully inserted around existing lore, with absolutely no contradictions. But adding in this extra element has the side effect of weakening the existing origins given for how the Avatar State worked; it deprioritized the past Avatars (which the writers then doubled down on in actually *erasing* then). Lion Turtles & bending? Similar. They're in no way incompatible with existing canon, but they lessened the importance of dragons and badgermoles in retrospect. The prevalence of lightning made Zuko's failing to learn it seem stupid; if it was being used for low-pay manufacturing jobs, was it being taught in primary school now? It weakened how it was introduced as a potentially lethal technique in ATLA. At the end of the day, all of these aspects satisfy the letter of the law of canon. But they seem to sneak *around* the existing canon so much that it pulled me out of immersion. I could feel the laser-cut edges where these "new" facts were perfectly designed to satisfy requirements. It reminded me that I was watching a story, frequently. That's why this comes up so much. A lot of this *felt* contradictory, which may be a worse crime than actually getting a few minor details wrong.

I feel bad for Tenzin; he's worked so hard and was eager. But it's more impressive that he's able to move past his bruised ego and just be proud of his kid and be a supporter and mentor to Korra. Unalaaq is just desperate to do everything himself; he's kind of like a dark mirror of Tenzin: He's desperate to do this thing that he feels he is "destined" to do but unlike Tenzin, he doesn't care about putting his family in harm's way to achieve his goals. Tenzin, while having ambitions, adamantly tries to keep Jinora from going into the Spirit World, keeping her safe, even though he eventually lets go. And I think Unalaaq is flip-flopping mainly because (unlike Tenzin) he refuses to let people help him find solutions and is determined to do this plan his way. As for everything else, not a big fan of the love triangle business and Bolin will come out of his fantasy eventually (: Can't wait for the next episode!

I don't think the origin of Bending conflicts with what was said in The Last Airbender. TLA said that people learned to bend from Dragons, Badger Moles, The Moon, and the Air Bison. This is not contradicted in Korra. The Lion Turtles gave people the ability to use the elements but they didn't teach them to bend it. This is shown with the fire bender hunters Wan tags along with. They just randomly toss fire. There is no grace, no stance, or anything. It's like they're throwing rocks or something. Later we see the Dragon teach Wan how to use the fire like it's a part of himself. As the fire bender hunters told people back in the city, Wan used fire like it was an extension of himself. They all sounded stunned when they heard that. He wasn't just tossing fire. He was using bending it to his will. This I think doesn't contradict what we learned in TLA.
@brandodasavage55386 жыл бұрын
Then why do firebenders lose their ability to bend when the sun is blocked? What about waterbenders with the moon? The origin story of Earthbending is told in The Cave of Two Lovers, and not one single Lion Turtle was mentioned. lol The Lion Turtles are garbage...
@brandodasavage55386 жыл бұрын
The writers of the show added that legend for a reason... making it false because it doesn't confirm something added later is a horrible way to write a story and is a retcon. The Sun Warriors never mention a Lion Turtle, but when Zuko loses his ability to bend in Book 3 of ATLA, Dragons show him how to bend again... and not through training and martial arts. Lion Turtles are still garbage.
@bigty3906 жыл бұрын
Brando Da Savage that was a meth not a fact
@RaiderNic996 жыл бұрын
Benders learned how to use the ability from Lion Turtles. They then went on to learn how to actually bend the element from the Dragons, the Moon, the Badger Moles, and the Air Bison. Not sure why that conflicts with TLA story. 10,000 years is a long time. It's extremely likely that no one consciously remembered the Lion Turtles. They likely became myth after a few generations. Hence why their imagery is seen in many places throughout TLA and Korra. As for Firebenders and the Sun, they didn't learn from the sun. They learned from Dragons. What they did learn was to use the sun as a source of warmth for their spirit/chi. Which is why they're stronger during the day and weaker at night. This is an advantage I would say that Water and Firebenders have over Earth and Air.
@JamesWiseMagic5 жыл бұрын
Lion Turtles arent garbage, you just fail to understand the lore. In fact the creaters of the show said that they originally wanted to tell the story of the turtles in avatar the last airbender but they didnt have time although Aang did see information about a lion turtle back in the spirit library. And your comments about why no one such as the sun warriors, etc mentioned the lion turtles is simply because they got lost in history which is pretty realistic. History hundreds of years ago and even thousands of years ago is a mystery and/or found to be incorrect later on. Thats just how history works. The lion turtles were super super ancient and people eventually forgot about them throughout history. This really isnt rocket science.
@leonardofaber58236 жыл бұрын
The Lion Turtles gave people the POWER of the elements, but the original BENDERS were Tui (Moon) for water, Badgermoles for Earth, Dragons for Fire and Sky Bisons for Air. One thing is to hold the element in you, the other is to bend it to your will. I hope this helps
@houseofaction6 жыл бұрын
Tui wasn't really a bender itself spirits can not bend the elements thats not within their power set. tui was just the spirit of the moon
@leonardofaber58236 жыл бұрын
If you are a bender in the Spirit World you can only bend there if you go complete (body and soul). A bender's SOUL can't bend in the Spirit World. The Spirits, on the other hand, have their abilities (in Tui's case, the push and pull of the tides, the first form of waterbending). And don't forget Tui and La were among the first Spirits (if not the very first ones) that crossed fro the Spirit World into the Mortal Realm. People cannot look at the Spirits in the Avatar mythology as if they were the same as a human soul. Despite being called Spirits, they are a supernatural species, not the echoes of a creature's life.
@leonardofaber58236 жыл бұрын

Yes, Mako used to be a part of the TTT ... though he wasn't really a part of them. I believe he said he ran little errands for them and just doing what he needed to in order to protect and take care of Bolin. They were orphans on the street and everything at the time. I find it hilariously ironic that Unalaq is resorting to physical brute force with the Northern portal. Shows just how desperate he is at this point. For Tenzin, I agree with Nahid! Majority of his life, this was essentially what was expected of him. Aang entrusted everything to him and he feels like a complete failure, especially when it comes to matters that are spiritual.

Guys, don't exaqgerate about the lion turtles. lol. They didn't have millions of people on their backs. They were big, but not THAT big. I'd say the densest population was hundreds, MAYBE, even a couple of thousand, but never millions. Remember this was thousands of and thousands of years before Korra. There weren't that many people even in the world. The Airbenders alone were just barely a couple hundred, if even that.

if we base it off of real human history, 10k years ago was the early holocene era, there was about 1 million people total in the world, and with the size of the lion turtles and the density that the cities on them appear to have, there was probably anywhere from a few hundred to like 10k on any 1 lion turtle.

I'm sooo looking forward to their reaction to all the spirit world stuff. Also sometime (of course) they miss things while talking. For example "if opening the portal with waterbending was so easy, why wouldn't someone else had done that already?" ... Unalaq himself said it when entering the spirit world, they bring something noone has since the portals were closed... their bending. Because before Korra opened one portal no bender could enter the spirit world with their physical body. I'm not upset or anything, just funny sometimes that none of the four seems to catch it and all miss it, haha :-) Also really curious about Nahid reaction to further Mako/Asami XD

It's not that Wan wasn't good, but he was only able to hold and bend one element, and one only. While he was learning to bend one of the elements, the other(s) were being held by Raava. He was only capable of bending the four at once when fused with her. So we can say that, yes, it's because of Raava that he and the future Avatars have the capacity of holding and bending the four elements. She's not only responsible for holding the elements. It's akso because of her that the reincarnation cycle is the way it is (the imediate return of the spirit plus the ability to communicate with that portion of the spirit that's still the Avatar's pastlife).

Another defense for the Spirit turtles bestowing bending "retcon"---the lion turtles weren't actually benders. ATLA referred to the animals as "original/first benders" because they were actually bending. The way I see it, the Lion turtles had the ability to bestow gifts, the special animals were the first benders, who taught humans the art and techniques. The moon is a spirit so that could be explained a couple ways. Potentially, the humans just observed the moon, or the moon spirit taught the humans.

I thought context would get my point across, but as I said it's my mistake and understamd why everybody would be hooked on the misuse of the word retcon or punctuating properly. I have a fragile ego so I can't stand being hated on the internet by someone I don't know. I hope you don't hate me, and at this point I can't do anything else about it but this long winded apology. *** I think the reason Unalaq flipflops back and forth over the portal is because he is having conversations with Vatuu. Unalaq personally believes he can open the portal himself, but Vatuu insists that they need Korra. So first, Unalaq tells Korra he doesn't need her, but later he talks with Vatuu and he insists they need Korra. So then Unalaq tells Eska and Desna to get Korra. And when Eska and Desna fail to capture Korra, they try to break open the portal without her. Only then does Unalaq come to Vatuu and say "I've failed you." And Vatuu says, "You haven't failed me yet. The avatar is in the spirit world."

I think it referred to that the technique Aang was taught was energy bending. As it is described that he was to bend "another's energy" so a technique all its own. Perhaps a skill the lion turtles themselves use to bestow bending to others. Not exactly a chi alignment as you have said.
@Quaether Жыл бұрын
1:05 My theory is that the Lion Turtles were/are the original Energybenders, which would explain their ability to bestow and take away bending to non-original benders. This would allow for the rest of the original benders (the Sky Bison, Moon Spirit, Badger Moles, And Dragons) to still be the "original" benders and teachers to non-original benders (ie. Toph being taught earthbending techniques by the Badger Moles and Avatar Won being taught/inventing the dance of the dragon with a dragon.)
@mdrw136 жыл бұрын
The lion turtles bestowed bending and the instinct of how to use it , but the bending arts were learnt by the 2nd generation(the one that didn't receive bending from the lion turtles, but from their parents(born with it) from the animals. Wan learnt from that white dragon, Oma and Shu from badgermoles, water tribe from Koi Form Moon and Ocean and the nomads from Sky Bison. The ability of bending comes from the lion turtles, but the knowledge and arts comes from waatching those animals.

My interpretation of Beginnings is the Lionturtles are the SOURCE of the bending, but the dragons/badger moles/air bisons/and I can't remember the water bending one trained humans to do it more effectively. Wan's fire bending was pretty rudimentary after receiving it from the Lionturtle, but the dragon dance refined it into a real skill.

@mathies35984 жыл бұрын
i think that the spirit bending, besides the fact you have to be very spiritual in a way, is also specifically a waterbending ability. it wouldnt make sense Unalaq could just do that.

Rava calls the air lion turtle the ancient one and the badger moles, dragons, and air bison are referred to as the original benders so IMO the lion turtles came first and they taught the animals bending which they learned from the spirits such as the moon/ocean spirit
@squirrelbuddi5 жыл бұрын
The lion turtles bend the energy in people so they have the ability to bend. The spirit animals taught them how to use them. So dragons and sky bisons and etc. Are spirit guides for those elements ment to guide the benders on how to use their bending to interact with their surroundings and eventually developed their own martial arts from that. The lore doesn't change it's just differentiating between what spirits gave them the ability and which ones taught them how to use the ability.
@megasxlr02826 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised they didn't note the whole being able to bend in the spirit world thing yet, though I'm sure they will.
@megasxlr02826 жыл бұрын
Yeah that was what I meant, since the only interactions in the spirit world they've seen before now, didn't have any bending, so I was a bit surprised they didn't notice right away "Hey why is Unalaq/Eska/Desna able to bend?' even Aang couldn't bend in the spirit world with how spiritual/strong he was.

Mako and Bolin used to be members of the Triple Threat Triads because they were living on the streets when they were kids/teenagers. The triad kinda took them in and taught them how to make money and get food and clothes.

So, Jinora could see spirits, cuz she is really spiritial girl, and because of the Air spiritual learning. Like Iroh, when he saw Roku's dragon spirit in the 1st season. In theory, Jinora can also live in the spirit world like Iroh.

from my understanding, the lion turtles gave people the actual elements, but the animals (+ the moon) taught humans how to actually BEND them, aka the correct, pure techniques. even in the flashback/story, the people see wan & are like "I've never seen someone use fire like this" "like an extension of themselves" which is EXACTLY what toph says when telling the gAang about the badger moles "earthbending is an extension of my senses"

Studio Mir which did all of season 1 (the one your calling the original) split the season 2 with the other studio that I can’t spell oops. Anyway, Studio Mir did Beginnings part I and II, (thank God!) then did episode 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14. So 7 total. The other studio did episodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9. Again 7 total. They specialize in action based animation but everything else falls to the waist side. Studio Mir does all of season 3 and 4, so don’t worry. All around excellent animation is coming from here on out!

*Jinora has an powerful spiritual connection. Remember this for future usage.* Tenzin, despite his airbending skills and everything Aang taught him, he's not the most spiritually inclined individual. It's actually kinda cool that Jinora is the one to guide Korra into the Spirit World. If you guys think she reminds you of Aang NOW, just keep on watching the show! ;) Oh, and Korra knows she was wrong for blowing off Tenzin the way she did, thus she apologized. That's right! Korra gets more character development. You know, that thing the haters say doesn't exist! Unalaq working with Vaatu? Who saw that one coming? But seriously, he was probably getting into the Spirit World via meditation, so there's no telling how long they've been conspiring together. Yeah, this episode definitely shows that they're trying too hard to make Mako look good because even Chief Beifong gets hit by the idiot ball. Remember in Book 1, when she actually took Korra's suspicions about Hiroshi into consideration, which led to a full-on investigation. Sadly, we get more tired police story cliches, at the expense of her character. Oh, and not many people seem to talk about this, but Varrick straight-up threatened the lives of Bolin and Asami. I guess being an eccentric businessman/comic relief kinda takes precedence over being a scheming bastard.
@SemiJuggaloNumber26 жыл бұрын
Mako I'm gonna be real with you, I don't like Mako all that much. It's not that I flat-out hate the guy, I mean, he's does have some good qualities; but he has done things that made it hard for me to like him. Also, I get that solving this case is supposed to be his time to shine, but what annoys me is that they had to resort to using tired cop cliches, in order to make Mako stand out. Oh, and I cannot stand Makorra. It was a rushed, poorly-developed relationship in Book 1, and Book 2 literally shows how incompatible Korra and Mako are together. So, I'm sorry if it bothers you, but I really, REALLY don't like that ship. Also, I have pointed out Korra's negative behavior on MULTIPLE occasions so don't even TRY to say that I'm biased. Oh, and Korra isn't supposed to be anything like Aang. I don't know if you've noticed, but Aang wasn't exactly perfect, himself. NO Avatar was perfect. The entire point of Korra's story, is her growing up from an arrogant, headstrong teenager, into a mature, compassionate young woman. Seems like the only one hating around here, is you. *edit* Also, I literally pointed out that how sinister Varrick was, for threatening Bolin and Asami.
@noahdaglio93626 жыл бұрын
The way I see it is that the Lion Turtles only grant the power of bending and it was the animals like the Badger Moles, Sky Bison and Dragons along with the Moon and Ocean spirits who taught the humans the form of bending similar to how there are many animal styles of martial arts from China
@mathies35984 жыл бұрын
Jinora is probably even more knowledgeble about avatars and spirits than her dad. she's been reading a fucking lot about it and is very interested in that. Obviously Tenzin is too, but Jinora is just more spiritual i guess.
