@@biegebythesea6775 How horrible! I never heard that! I hope that's just a nasty rumor and not really true! Edit Okay, I just looked this up and found that the allegations in his son's book were egregiously exaggerated. The publisher told him that the worse it was, the more books would sell, so he spun yarns about being monstrously mistreated for nothing more than money. Years later, he apologized to his family, but the damage was done, the name tarnished, and apparently the shame of those false accusations still clings.

Though I guess he’s not really a good digger that’s more like a chick who married a guy for his money he’s more just greedy. Though it does kind of sound like he owes Plankton more of the secret formula than he got since plankton was helping with it.

This is my favorite retelling of the story. Washington Irving's description of Ichabod was faithfully and whimsically rendered by Disney's artists and animators. I love the cozy harvest-time atmosphere of the Dutch-American countryside, both in the book and in this cartoon. The story has just the right amount of spookiness. And Bing Crosby's narrating and singing was icing on the cake! I'm also glad that in this cartoon, Ichabod, even with his faults, might have married and had children (who looked just like him!) Stories like this are my favorite Halloween entertainment.

I remember watching this years ago on The Disney Channel. It wasn’t until years later that I saw the characters differently. Ichabod was a social climber out to marry Katrina to get to her fathers riches. He was also a freeloader looking to get a free meal. On the other hand, Brom Bones, while he does come on a little strong, shares his ale with the guys. Still a great cartoon to watch in the fall, especially during Halloween.

As a child, I have watched this Disney tale many times, and through the years I have learned a few things, especially at 1:48, about the title of the tavern. The word "the" used to be spelled with two letters, one of them is now a forgotten English letter. The Letter Thorn "Þ". Therefore, "The" used to be spelled as "Þe", and derived as the same pronunciation as "th." Þerefore, þe word "þe" had a similar look to þe letter "y" as time progressed, so when you see "ye" in old signs, þat "y" is actually þe Letter Thorn.

To those who think of Ichabod as just a slimy golddigger, look at it this way - at 4:58, you can see he doesn't even have his own home, he literally LIVES IN his schoolhouse, he lives a hand-to-mouth existence. He has no choice but to be charming and butter up the ladies, or he doesn't know where his next meal is coming from. Can you blame him for being drawn to a rich girl who could take him away from all that?
@amysbees66862 ай бұрын
The story was published in 1820, and set in 1790. By 1795 NYS had a public education law enacted providing monetary support for schools (and I presume teachers). Westchester County, where Tarrytown is located, would have fallen under the auspices of the Regents of The University of the State of New York, founded in 1784. A village such as Sleepy Hollow would have provided modest room and board for their schoolmasters. Irving described Crane boarding at the homes of his students, rotating weekly. Not only does Irving recount Crane assisting with the farm chores where he boarded, but he earned extra money offering singing lessons.
