Storyline:
When the young Texas Ranger, John Reid (Klinton Spilsbury), is the sole survivor of an ambush arranged by the outlaw leader, Bartholomew "Butch" Cavendish (Christopher Lloyd), he is rescued by an old childhood Comanche friend, Tonto (Michael Horse). When he recovers from his wounds, he dedicates his life to fighting the crime that Cavendish represents. To this end, John Reid disguises himself and becomes the great masked western hero, The Lone Ranger. With the help of Tonto, the pair go to rescue President Ulysses S. Grant (Jason Robards, Jr.) when Cavendish takes him hostage. We learn that Cavendish was an officer in the United States military before he was court-martialled and dishonorably discharged. "I was surprised to read that this movie did so poorly at the box office. We saw it 6 or 7 times in the theater and just assumed everyone else did too! We loved it as kids and still do today as adults. I still want to gallop around the living room on my pretend horse when I hear the song. If you want to look at this movie from a cinematic standpoint, I guess it isn't as good as the blockbuster, special effects extravaganzas produced today, but it is a good quality story and film without a lot of needless blood and guts. "I first saw this movie when it came out in 1981, I was 12 years old and at that time there was a Lone Ranger cartoon on every saturday plus you could still sometimes see Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels early Sunday morning. I absolutely loved this movie as a kid, spent a lot of years trying to find it on VHS and later DVD, with very little luck. Was the movie great, no. The producer of this movie filed a law suit against Clayton Moore to bar him from wearing the Lone Ranger outfit in public. Many people boycotted the movie.

I watched the TV series and movies recently with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels. Best portrayal of the Lone Ranger and Tonto ever, imo.

I am still baffled as to why people and the so-called experts didn’t like this great film. When we first got HBO in 1981, I remember watching it over and over and absolutely fell in love with it! So they dubbed his voice, who cares! The movie was beautifully shot with epic locations and cinematography. Merle Haggard’s narration was fantastic as well! Robards and Lloyd were exceptional as usual. I will say this, for a movie that critics hated, there was a shit-load of merchandise to be had! My Christmas that year consisted of the Gabriel action figures and play set. For anyone who hasn’t seen this movie, I highly recommend it!

This is a damn good version of the Ranger and damn Barry's score (although repetitive) is always a nice good...not to mention Christopher Lloyd. Dude always comes through.

This is a wonderful version of the story. Beautiful scenery, glorious music and a respectable, distinguished, honorable portrayal of Tonto. Had to drive 50 miles to a theater and sat through it three times in a row. And every time people laughed when Grant threatened Custer with Montana, and cheered when that recognizable theme came on.

Major problem with this movie was it was too short. Only 98 minutes and the film was more than halfway over when the Lone Ranger is created.
