For the sake of clarity, by D&D rules Vex was dead, her soul had left her body, her heart stopped beating. D&D has spells for resurrection, though -- even if you are ash and dust -- and one was used here. (And as Kash suggested, they are difficult to pull off -- especially in that game, where they added some rules to make it a roll of the dice.) ...And if they hadn't rolled well, that would have been the end of Vex.
@ShadowyFox_86
@ShadowyFox_86 Жыл бұрын
@@wassermanlouis Interestingly enough, the show diverges from the stream in the results of the resurrection ritual. The spell fails in LoVM as all the symbols tied to the ritual go dark before Vex's soul leaves her body. It is actually Vax's sacrifice that causes the Matron to return Vex back to life. It definitely is a choice that furthers the story they're telling in this.

It just hit me how the early flashback fits so well to the end of the episode with Vax. Vex says, whatever happens happens, they can't change it, which Vax sees later, but also Vex says that the bear needs mercy and Vax kills it with his dagger, which is his role now as the champion of death.

Great reaction, as always! The woman at the end, walking towards the city is Anna Ripley, the one on Percy's list who tortured Percy and Cassandra as kids, and escaped right before the ziggurat fight. 4:20 He offered his life for Vex's. And the Queen took it. Not his death, the rest of his life. It's hers now. Also I'm still completely freaking hooked on the noises that beholder-knockoff monster was making. What a SOUND...but my fave thing about that fight is the last knife he threw. The monster was trying to block it in flight, but there is no defence against the coming of death. It was completely inevitable, and that symbolism felt completely deliberate for the one he serves now.

So it's worth it to mention that Liam Obrien, Vax's player and voice actor was going through an extremely difficult time in his life during this arc of the campaign. He lost his mom to cancer, he had his own health related scare, and he sank into a really heavy depression. He talked to Matt, the DM and a very trusted friend about it, and he began to use this campaign, this story to sort of work through some of the things going on in his head and in his personal life. That's why Vax's character is sort of beloved in the Critter community, because SOOOOO much of Liam went into Vax's journey. Another thing that hit Liam really hard was that in the Campaign, Vax had been getting closer to Pike's Goddess Sarenrae(The Everlight). Liam was even considering taking some levels in Paladin to reflect that. Vax even wore a symbol of the everlight on the back of his hand. As soon as Vax made that deal, his everlight symbol began to corrode and rusted off, signifying that the everlight was no longer the one he served, now it's The Raven Queen. It showed that pretty well in the show with the golden thread of Fate now connecting Vax to The Raven Queen.

The Matron of Ravens is a Psychopomp. A being that ferries souls to the afterlife. She is neither good nor malicious. But, as truly neutral as death should be. She abhors necromancy and undeath as it goes against the proper cycle of life. As for resurrection spells, she sees it as mere extending the due date. But, yeah… Laura Bailey (Vex’s actress) was fully ready to roll a new character.

@@Vipre-that's what I put it down to as well. I rarely have criticism for their designs, but I think the hand is just too generic. It might be leather, could be a glove, goes with the hood. Maybe if it had looked more mechanical, exposed clockwork or something, I dunno. The other thing is, she's silent here. Kelly Hu has a great voice, and way more people get it next episode when she finally speaks. Anyway, it's not really a criticism, since much of the exposition is supposed to be revealed slowly and tied together with tons of foreshadowing and payoff running from the first episode through at least four seasons. Yeah, the golden threads you see the Matron of Ravens interacting with are threads of fate (similar to those in Greek mythology). So I'm not entirely sure if she severed Vax's emotional connection to Vex. I suspect (strictly a theory on my part), that it's more in the nature of Vax's fate no longer being tied to Vex. On a side note, if you watch the musical intro going back as far as episode 2 in season 1, you'll notice the golden threads of fate that have been hiding under our noses the whole time.

When you talked about Vax not having any special powers until now, well, about that, In dnd mechanics ranger (Vex) is technically a minor spell caster with affinity for nature. So far only thing we've seen of her is one arrow splitting into multiple in episode with Anders in season 1, which could be magical bow too. It seems they made changes to make each character more unique, as in game 5/7 characters had access to healing magic, while in show Pike is clearly specialist, with Scanlan and Keyleth managing in a pinch.

The crazy thing about the stories in Vox Machina (And all of Critical Role, Mighty Nein, etc.) is that the important things, even if adapted, happened in real time rolling dice with their decisions at the game table. The show is written of couse but the basis for it, i.e. Vex dieing, Vax becoming the champion, was not written, it was all the players decisions that led to it in the game. That's why I love Critical Role so much. Watching they make their own stories live is so much fun!

I love this episode personaly as the game I am in has been going on for a decade. In it I am the current Champion of the Raven Queen being a huge fan of critical role I found it such a connecting aspect to making me love Vax as a character when I first saw this play out in the live streams. So getting a real good image of the Goddess I have served in game all these years is a fucking treat to me. So far for my story I have found that my character who is an elf due to the aspect of reincarnation, has been living life after life after life as her Champion. She has molded my very spirt into being a weapon in her name and its a cycle I am attempting to break currently. Elves, when they trance, can see past lives and over the long course of this game I have had glimpies of past conflicts and past lives of service I have become more and more aware of. My character was very much a do as he is told kind of lone wolf but this current life I have been tasked with resorting the natural order of life and death due to a new God intervening and trapping souls in their realm stealing from all the other Gods. I happened upon the sword of Zerial and its ability to grant a 20 charisma score [ as my charisma was like 6 from rolled stats] has given my character a much-needed ability to act for himself for once in all of his lives. It is now a game of cat and mouse trying to find a way to break my service to her before she realizes I am fully aware of my lives path before she kills me to restart and recyle me back into being in her total service as a weapon. But this is the first time he has ever been " woke" to the idea he is in an endless cycle of death and reincarnation also serving as her champion through the ages.

You have now officially met the Matron of Ravens, the goddess of death, fate, and winter. Something to keep in mind is that she is not evil (and I can't stress enough how important a detail that is). She is as natural and as neutral as the moment of death. She specifically governs the passage from life to the afterlife. She hates the undead because they pervert the natural end to life. To repeat what others have said, Vex was dead. Completely dead. Had to burst the "vindicated" bubble but no one lied. Resurrection magic exists in this world but it is not a given that it will succeed. Like Kash said, it's really difficult. In this case, the ritual failed (unbeknownst to anyone but Vax) and had he not made his plea, Vax's sister would be permanently dead. Vax offered himself in exchange for his sister's life, and what you see the Matron cut is the thread of fate that tied the twins' fates together. His fate is now tied to the Matron. The emotional connection between the twins hasnt changed, but the thread of fate between Vax and Vex cannot be reconnected. Those golden threads in the intro will hopefully take on a new meaning for you. The Matron listened to his plea and took Vax. Vax didn't specify that he was exchanging a death for a death. He simply offered himself, and that's a significant difference. She chose him as her champion, her direct agent/representative in the mortal realm. She is showing him information he needs to understand, including the war between the gods known as the Calamity. She has him face Purvan in a battle that is unwinnable, to teach him that he cannot death or fate; that he has to accept it. The gods that are tied to the vestiges they're seeking are not evil gods. It is not a bad thing to become their champion. It may be inconvenient, but it's not a bad thing.

something worthy of note is that the Matron of Ravens is the God of Death and Fate not the god of the dead, she’s very much like the Grim Reaper in the sense that once it’s your time it is her duty to move your spirit to the afterlife. She is a very Lawful Neutral Goddess because death is neither good nor evil it is only natural. Ironic because she is the only god who used to be mortal

Based off the time sensitivity of the casting, I'd say the spell they were using to try and bring Vex back was Revivify, the lowest form of revival magic there is. It only works on a creature that's died within the last minute, it won't work on a creature that died of old age, it can't restore missing body parts, and normally requires a very expensive material component (specifically diamonds worth 300 gold pieces, and I've seen people estimate the value of a single gold piece being anywhere from $20 to $100). Normally, those limitations, especially the material component, would be the cost of casting the spell (and keep in mind that having the ability to cast magic doesn't mean you have the potential to even learn the spell, because different types of casters get access to different spells, and even Revivify requires a spell caster who's more than just adept at magic), however since they were in a tomb dedicated to a goddess of death, the spell likely couldn't have worked if Vax didn't strike the deal he did, as god magic will always win out over mortal magic.

Vax's life belongs to the Raven Queen, now; but he had to be tested. Once he accepted death, she awakened the armour. (Vestiges have three states: dormant, awakened and exalted.) Vax had Boots of Haste long before this, but I guess they bundled the effect into the vestige. Beholders are trademarked, so they had to tweak the monster, which they originally fought before getting the armour; it's why Vex's health was so low in the first place. Rogues typically aren't proficient with swords. There were six other tombs in the temple, suggesting seven champions during the Calamity - I don't know how long it actually went on for - and now Vax, a millenium later. Yet another tick in the Didn't Recognise Ripley collumn. Still not sure I agree with some that it was on purpose.

Vex died, there are ways to revive a character, but it’s not guaranteed to work. It’s hard to portray the feeling of uncertainty in an animated series, especially since she’s a main character and main characters have plot armor. It’s a roll for whether or not the revival works. But, like I said, it’s hard to portray how that feels in game to an animated series. That’s why everyone tried to explain how DEAD she was. Cause she was, she was dead, but they were able to bring her back.

So in simple terms, each of the gods has a champion. That individual is the direct representative/agent of that deity. Due to the Divergence (the event the Vestiges are named after), the gods cannot directly influence the world. They work their will through their clergy and their champion. The visions Vax is seeing are like training videos at work: they're telling him what she feels he needs to know.

The ravens queen is the goddess of death and fate, the gold treads are the representation of fate, and the fate of Vex was to die there. So she cutting the tread is changing the fate of Vex

So I want to share this with you guys because it is by far my favorite fan made thing the Critical Role fans have done. And that is a song that is Vax talking to the Raven Queen. It's just so amazing and makes me cry almost every time I listen to it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHmann5oj9WSo7c

You really do not know what just happened? or are you just in denial? Anyways all shall be revealed in due time. The woman at the end isn't a new character but an old one, the one that got away.

I know she doesn't look like sh*t anymore. But you all don't remember Dr. Anna Ripley from the first season?

a few things - SO GLAD the raven queen cut that damn cord between vax and vex so they can both be their own individuals without the other esp vax....the creature they fought in the campaign was called a beholder and had WAY more powers than just petrification but for the purposes of the OGL or whatever they had to dumb it way tf down....hurry up and get to the 6th ep ;)
