For a little context with Keyleth/Kash. Kash is played (both in game and in the show) by Will Friedle. Marisha, who plays Keyleth had a childhood crush of Will, so when they played the game, her fangirling over Will kind of bled through in Keyleth's interactions with Kash. 1. Vax was fighting with Purvan Suul in his vision, the previous Champion of the Raven Queen, since he passed the test Vax is now the Champion. 2. Go rewatch the opening, you've seen those golden threads before. 3. Just because he made this deal doesnt fundamentally change how he feels or acts towards others, Vax is being moody because anyone would be a little tense after trading his life to a god he called a bitch to her face, mixing that with the overwhelming grief he felt at his sister's death, dude is dealing with a lot right now. 4. You wanna know what the Calamity is about? Go watch Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, it's a 4 part mini-campaign set long before any of the events of Legend of Vox Machina so there's nothing really to be spoiled about. 5. The locket, lovingly referred to as 'Vex's pokeball", is an item taken right out of the campaign because of the difficulties Vex had with going place with Trinket. Like Zahra said "It places a creature in a neutral pocket plane" So like a pokeball they are placed in basically a stasis dimension. So it doesnt matter that Trinket is a big bear in a small locket, size is relative. Think of it like a pocket Tardis (it's bigger on the inside) 6. Keyleth and Kashaw had a flirting thing going because that again, is straight out of the stream show, Kash even kissed Keyleth long before Vax ever got the chance to confess his feelings. Both Kashaw and Zahra were introduced long before the whole Briarwood Arc in the stream, but it didnt make sense to introduce them before now. Kashaw and Zahra were played by guests on the stream and definitely some of the most popular ones, though I think they've been beat out by Robbie Damon lol. 7. Vox Machina Ages: Grog is likely the youngest as his age is never specified (he cant count so he probably doesnt know), Vex and Vax are 27/28, Keyleth is 23 /24, Percy is in his mid 20s, Pike is in her 30s or early 40s (Gnomes are some of the longest living races outside of Elves), Scanlan is the oldest. 8. "The Raven Queen, er uh Matron of Ravens" funny enough, both are the right name. The Raven Queen, Matron of Death is the official name, but since the show is not licensed by Wizards of the Coast, it has to use different names for copywritten material or flat out change them. For example, Grog is a Goliath, but because that name is under copywrite, the show refers to his race as Half-Giants, and the monster they fought in this episode is a legally distinct version of a beholder.

This particular resurrection and its consequences are one of the wonders of improvisation. Others have explained how Matt Mercer does resurrection and how players can try to increase its chances of success. Liam offered this deal 'Take me instead' as his attempt to increase the chance of success for the roll. Kashaws resurrection then succeeded, but narratively this became the Matron accepting the deal. It was one of the biggest turning points in the campaign of Vox Machina and was fueled by several spontaneous decisions. A great example how playing things through can write amazing stories. There is much to be said about Vax' new Matron, but that's best left for the future. For now, it's just worth knowing that she is the goddess of death (specifically of the moment of passing) and also of fate. Furthermore, she is represented by ravens. If you rewatch the intro of the show with this knowledge, some nice things will appear.

Yep, the Matron of Ravens is the goddess of both death and fate, so she knew what would be happening and made early introductions to foreshadow this. And that warrior in the red visions, was Purvon, a name we got in the previous episode. And yes, how could he be death's champion if he doesn't (literally) "accept death"? He offered his life for his sister's, it's not the way he meant to give his life, but "giving his life in service" is an acceptable interpretation of the deal. And don't worry, even if I'm being vague now, there's lots of season to come... 🙂

In the game they used the locket as a Pokeball. D&D has Animal Companions... but they die... REALLY quick... For context, The Raven Queen, like most, has other pseudonyms she goes by. For Critical Role specifically, they kept to a pseudonym because "The Raven Queen" is a registered character with Wizards of the Coast, so legal loop around goes. Back in season 1, animators said Trinket was particularly tricky to work on, which is why he was left safe at the keep. In the story proper, it became a recurring issue where Trinket was very underutilized (the initial Beastmaster was notorious for gimping the Ranger player with a debatable pet), so it's not like he even did much during the Briarwood arc anyway. Also, in the show alone, there have already been several instances where Trinket was kept outside of populated areas or venues, so keeping him in a little Pokeball-like locket is actually the ideal solution. The pocket dimension allows him to observe the outside world while he's in there anyway.

Vax's life belongs to the Matron now, but he had to be tested before becoming her new champion. Once he accepted death, she awakened the armour. (Vestiges have three states: dormant, awakened, exalted.) Vax had Boots of Haste long before this, but they bundled the effect into the vestige, hence why he's so zippy now. Also, the pokeball was originally Purvan's, and contained his wolf companion. He ended up guarding the forests surrounding Whitestone. Beholders are the second most dangerous monsters, under dragons; they're also trademarked, so it had to be tweaked for the show. Originally, they fought it before finding the sarcophagus, which was why Vex's health had been so low in the first place. Zahra was never this antagonistic, and on this occasion forged an arrow of dragonslaying for Vex. Gotta love a girl with an anvil. I could count the number of reactors who recognised Ripley on one hand. Most people don't, just because she had a bath and a haircut, got some sleep and some new clothes, and built herself a new hand... I guess that's a lot, actually...

So some context from the original stream. Vex did really die in the stream. In the game there is unconcious and there is dead. When a character runs out of health they go unconscious at which point they need to roll death saves to try to stave of death. At this point they can also be healed with a spell or potion to revive them. Vex however got hit by an effect that would kill her instantly if it took her to 0 health (and she was low on health from a previous fight so that’s exactly what happened). No death saves, no spells or potions to get her on her feet. Just down instantly, and it was just as shocking in the moment as it was in the show especially seeing Laura’s face as she realized what just happened. At this point we get to Matt Mercer’s resurrection rules. A set up he home-brewed due to feeling the default rules made death too trivial and easily reversed. When a character dies a ritual can be done based off some method of revival such as certain spells (Kashaw in this instance provided that) to bring them back to life. By default this is a D20 roll where if it is 10 or higher they revive anything else and they are gone. Alongside this up to three other characters in the group can attempt to aid the ritual which consists of a roll of their own based on how they are trying to aid. For each successful assist the chance of revival improves however if they fail their own roll the chance decreases. The chance also decreases on subsequent deaths so if a character gets revived but then later dies again it will be harder to bring them back. So in this moment one bad roll and Vex really would have been gone for good. Also a fun note Liam O’Brien who plays Vax genuinely was trying to trade his life for his sister here. He has stated in interviews that he fully intended that this would be him giving his life and that Vax would die here so that Vex would live. Matt however took it in a whole different direction with the Matron of Ravens building it into a new story moment and completely throwing Liam for a loop.

Some of what I'll say has already been touched on, but I hope to provide a bit if context from different angles! 1) In terms of the Calamity, the world this story takes place in originally had gods dwelling on the material plane, but at a certain point some turned traitor and caused a planet-wide war that tore the land asunder. It was so bad the Prime Deities (read, the good ones) banished the others at great cost, left, and created a barrier to keep gods from fully walking the earth again. This was that war, the Calamity, that we saw in Vax's vision. 2)Purvan was the original champion of the Matron of Ravens, so it makes sense that he'd be the one who tested Vax on his worthiness not only to wear the armor, but to become the Matron's champion. It seems as though Vax hasn't fully realized the latter part of that test, though! And 3) In terms of Keyleth speculation at the end, don't worry too much about her! She was always just kind of socially awkward. Some of it might be naivete, but it's also just that general dorkiness that comes from growing up in a culture detached from the rest of the world and its cultures. She absolutely comes into her own! Don't you worry!

It didn't 'change' who Vax is inside, but he has a lot to process right now, and he knows that, but he's still got to figure it out. The warrior he fought was Purvan, the previous champion, and you have to surrender to death in order to serve it. But, the Matron is the Goddess of Death, AND Fate. He is NOT enslaved. She is NOT controlling him. She is CALLING him to be her champion. And those golden threads, they are the threads of Fate, and the Matron is also the Goddess of Fate, so it's not corrupting anything. His Fate is changed, but through his own actions in making that "bargain" as it were.

She's in her early twenties (and so is Percy strangely enough) where as the twins are mid-twenties at this point and everyone else is even older, so that paired with the fact that she had never left her remote home until quite recently can explain why she is the way she is a bit. You can see her get just as flustered with Vax in S1... the thing with Kash is that he's a lot more direct than Vax. Either way I don't think she's figured out what she wants romantically, it's all a bit much for her at the moment.

@@Ironoclasty Please bear with my rules lawyering, I just love talking about CR and D&D when I have the opportunity :) So, first things first. Timeless Body, which is the druid feat you're talking about, doesn't stop aging, it "just" slows it massively. Per the rules, you only physically age by one year for every decade that has passed. As such, also your lifespan is increased tenfold. For a half-elf like Keyleth the normal lifespan is 150-180 years so she can live up to 1500-1800 years instead. However, that does not mean time stops for her, she still gains a year on her every birthday, she just doesn't manifest physical signs of it (just like Keanu Reeves). And yes, she was a very young half-elf. That was deliberate. C1 was supposed to be her hero's journey and characters in those are more often than not teenagers (when human). Half-elves are a bit of late bloomers, but physically they're not much different than humans, they still achieve adulthood at around 20 and it's only by their 30s-40s when the heritage kicks in. The midlife crisis hits them at around 80-90. To sum up, Keyleth was 23 in campaign 1, when she gained the Timeless Body feat, she was 47 in campaign 2 but appeared no older than 25 and she's 54 in campaign 3 but visually she's still 26.
@Ironoclasty Жыл бұрын
@@Mordring Okay dude, look: If you want to do rules lawyering, you have to practice in the proper jurisdiction. Keyleth was created in Pathfinder rules, which were, in turn, based on 3.5, an advancement on the third edition rules. I may be a little rusty after all this time, but that was my wheelhouse. Half-elves had a starting age of 20 + a variable depending on what class you were. Druids add 3d6, so a roll of 3 is outside of the second deviation from the mean (highly unlikely). Therefore, if the starting age was deliberate, it was not rolled, but chosen, negating probability statistics and, as Matt is observably permissive in character builds, he probably would have let her be any age she wanted. In which case, there are no standard rules to lawyer other than, "the character plays what they want to play." Furthermore, Timeless Body is a class feature, not a feat. And as the description indicates that the druid ages only 1 year for every 10, then she would not be another year older after every year, she would only be a tenth of a year older after another year, birthdays notwithstanding. And, to be clear, the druid does not also increase their lifespan tenfold, as that would extend their lives by a factor of 100 years to a year; the feature would simply mean that the character's lifespan would extend tenfold as a result of aging 1 year for every 10. This, of course, leads to the inevitable discussion on the philosophy of what aging actually is for a creature who doesn't age at the same rate as other biologically similar creatures. If a year only refers to the passage of time, then how does that not reflect on the age of the subject? Would they not still age as all other things do? Or should they be considered displaced in maturity? And what does that even mean? (This last statement is usually where all philosophical discussions end, with stares trailing off into wonder. No try it, whenever somebody starts talking about anything philosophical that's boring to you, just say "But what does that even mean?" and stare off into space. And if they try to tell you what it means, shake your finger at them and tell them "No, you're doing it wrong.") In conclusion, yes, you were right, but you were not completely right about how you were right. And also, it's a game and the "Rule of Cool" takes precedence, so it really doesn't matter what the rules say if the player wants to interpret it differently. Yeah, I could have just agreed with you, but if you're a rules lawyer, you probably enjoyed all that.

Vax'ildan and his new relationship to the Matron of Ravens is going to take some time to figure out. For now, he gets these visions but he doesn't know what they mean. Keyleth is a bit socially awkward, both due to her personality and her fairly sheltered upbringing, so she's not used to getting such direct attention as Kashaw is giving her. Others have mentioned most of the stuff I was going to bring up, but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is Vax's new Vestige. Originally his armor gave elemental resistances that could be switched around by the wearer. For gameplay balance reasons, this is pretty great for such an artifact, however, for animation, it's a little underwhelming and a bit hard to show off, so instead it was changed to grant superspeed. Vax did originally have an item in the campaign called the Boots of Haste, which gave him temporary increases to his movement and granted additional action, and with his plethora of rogue abilities that allow him to slip in and out of combat and keep stealth up, it made a VERY potent combo, probably more-so than his Vestiges elemental powers.

A few helpfull tidbits of info: 1. Keyleth had a rather sheltered upbringing, thats why she is a bit awkward and naive and not that good with social interactions and ques. So the bit of flitring with Kash she more or less does not know how to react so she blushes a lot. 2. The golden thread are the threads of fate as u mentioned and when the Matron cut it between the twins it now means that their fates are no longer tied together as they were supposed to be before Vax made that deal. 3. The relationship between the Matron and Vax will be explored down the line. 4. If u now watch the intro of the show the raven and the golden threads should now make more sense after this episode.

No BS. There have been actual tears shed at that table because Trinket was making death saves. And on more than 1 occasion.

The cliff note version of the God battle is thousands of years ago the gods existed on the material plain but there creations (humans, dwarfs, elfs, ect) grew arrogant in there arcane abilities and begun to no longer respect the gods which led to a Civil War of the Pantheon. Half the gods decided to start the apocalypse and wipe the board clean to start again while the other half loved their creations and respected there free will. The battle was called the divergence which led all the followers of each God into mortal combat with each other and the creation of the vestiges, sorta like the nuclear arsenal of the gods and archamges of the time. Eventually the good gods won and banished themselves and the bad gods to there respective planes and dimensions and erecting a God gate that prevents any God, good or bad, physically entering the material plane.

*EDIT* I was wrong, started to see it on other Videos... no idea what it is though ^^* Orginial: looks like camera or your edit is defect. There is a line of black pixels between and over your heads if I watch in Fullscreen, for both my monitors and even OBS picks it up.

Probably just messed up the crop in the edit 🤗

If you want to see more d&d you could check out fools gold it is an animated series by dingo doodles. She does all the work herself so the quality is lower but the story is amazing.

Love your reactions, especially at the start of this episode. As for Vax, I see it as a change in his Main connection. Both being special and strong. Though this one is going to take some getting used to.

The story between Vax and the Matron of Ravens is not finished yet. You get a lot more this season but even then that's not the end of it. Vax made a deal to save his sister from deaths embrace.

some order of event have to be changed from the original show. the slayers take Zahra and Cash are introduced in an adventure before the briarwoods so cash is the first to introduce romance as a concept to the game he actually kisses Keyleth. next adventure vaxs admits his feelings for her.
@AdamEspersona Жыл бұрын
No, it didn't begin with Kash. What happened then was a one-time thing. Even the cast credit the introduction of the concept of romance at their table to Liam.

Keyleth and the twins are meant to be 27, this is canon. However, Marisha who plays Keyleth is the youngest of them all.
@gamesforfun6194 Жыл бұрын
Keyleth is actually younger than the twins, early 20s like Percy
@sandiesandholm1236 Жыл бұрын
@@gamesforfun6194Hmm, I remember so clearly them saying team half elf were all the same age 🤔 But I checked and it does say 23. Mb. Twins age 27 for sure tho, cause I remember they were asked their age and Liam said "well I'm 27, I don't know about her." 🤣
@gamesforfun6194 Жыл бұрын
@@sandiesandholm1236 it's easy to think they are of similar age since they are team half elf, but yeah part of Keyleth's whole arc is basically a coming of age story. So she's one of the younger members of Vox Machina.
