I never noticed the sad side of the ending, since it mostly made me mad, making our whole adventure feel worthless saving a whale we met for one second instead of the characters we adventured together with. But looking back, whether we felt sad or mad with the ending, its true message was a view of every game we play, complete and forget about. In reality, every character we've saved in the ending of a game, disappears turning into a memory... as we leave the game and move on.

Back when I first saw the ending to this game on the Game Boy back in the day, I also cried like this. As a big fan, I’m glad this story can still connect with people in the same way, and still get such a response today. Especially from someone who, like me, isn’t prone to intense emotional displays like this. The fact that we both broke down at this speaks to how well done it is, I think. This is also my favorite Legend of Zelda game, and it makes me happy to hear Okayu say the same. I still don’t understand Japanese very well, but I think Okayu and I are definitely similar in some ways, and I’m glad she got to experience this story, if in a different form than I did. I don’t know if this version has the same “extra” if you beat it without dying like in the original, but I imagine that would have hit even harder. It did for me, the first time I managed it.

The saddest thing, for me at least, is that of everyone in the island, Marin is the only one that wants to go out into the sea and see the world. Everyone else on the island seemed perfectly happy to be there forever, but Marin wanted to go into the world. Also, it is possible that Link's dreams mixed with the Wind Fish's dream to create Marin, since of everyone on the island, she was the only one that looked like someone Link knew (Zelda) which would not be possible for the Wind Fish to dream about.

I always saw the ending as a meta commentary on gaming. You can't live in a dream just like you can't live in a game, but you can enjoy your time in the game, and its worth while even if it's only temporary. Because the world is hard enough and we all need an escape. Vtubers are kinda similar in that way. Okayu isn't real, but she is real enough to bring us some joy in a difficult and harsh world. One day we are going to have to wake from the dream, but we should be glad for all the time we had together.
