I bought the kit 20 years ago from when I was station in Italy and never used it.

That's too bad that you didn't get to use it but just looking at it and showing it is enough for some collectors.

Great Video thanks! Brings back lots of memories. Most of the guys at the bike shop only ever purchased frame sets (road or MTB, so we would always face and chase the BB and the head tube. Double check the derailleur hanger. And since we always built our own wheels we liked to use the campy dishing tool, even if the Park was laying around :). And when Shimano came out with that shitty low profile head set, some times we had to mill down the head tube to get a quality Stonglite Delta A9 headset to fit. I hated when frame builders would install an Edco or something low profile and then you couldn’t put other headsets on. Don’t forget we also had to file down any chrome on the lugs for the Italian road bike frames or you’d ruin the cutters. They often came with chrome over the faces…..mass produced road frames…..never impressed by them. Again thanks for posting. Your video said did anyone notice anything that didn’t come in the kit, I did see a head badge laying there in when the box was opened? ….probably not what you were talking about?
@JimLangley17 ай бұрын
I'm happy to hear it brought back some good memories Repackrider, thanks so much for watching and sharing how you used the tools! I forgot about filing down the chrome, thanks for reminding me - and milling down head tubes, too. Sure was a ton of work on those frames when you think about it. Good job finding the Atala head badge, that definitely doesn't belong in the box. But, the tool that's in there that didn't come with the toolkit is a Cinelli 7mm Allen wrench. That's because some Cinelli stems used a 7mm stem bolt and Campy's kit maxed out at 6mm. Thanks for watching the awesome comment 💯🙏

Beautiful kit. I wish i had one 😞

Appreciate you watching and commenting Sun! I got this kit because I was in the right place at the right time - it was basically luck. And I built wheels for the owner to buy the kit and that was lucky too because I couldn't have afforded his price otherwise. So there's always a chance you might own one one day. Thanks again! 🚴

@@JimLangley1 thanks for the very informative videos. I recently applied the techniques i learnt on your channel to convert a 5 speed to a 6 speed rear wheel from my early 80s road bike. I was most cautious about re-dishing the wheel, but it was straight forward.

@@JimLangley1 I have only seen a few maybe 3 in my life. In 77 or 78 on the Campagnolo support van and some guy came to Kenosha with one. At that time WAY above my means. Would love a deep dive video. Thanks for the reply.

so it works with all the modern frames?
@JimLangley17 ай бұрын
Thanks for the great question. No you can't say that it works with "all" modern frames because so many are different dimensions than what steel frames used to be. But, if a modern frame has a threaded BB of an old dimension BSA versus T47 for example (T47 is the new threaded BB "standard" and is oversize) then the tools would work fine. In the video I say some of the tools are still useful and they are. I still use the wheel dishing tool, the dropout alignment tools (for checking alignment on rim brake bikes -they won't work on through axle bikes), cone wrenches on hubs with cones and other of the hand tools. But mostly I use the kit when working on vintage classic steel road bikes. Thanks for watching and the question 🙏

I worked in a bike shop that had the remnants one one of these. It had been abused and bits of it had been stolen over decades: the cutters were blunt and the handles were bent. It was quite a sad sight. I ended up buying newer tools, because these were inoperable.
@JimLangley17 ай бұрын
That's kind of a tragedy when that happens zygmunt - probably no one in the shop was in charge to ensure that the tools were taken care of properly. It's nice to hear that you replaced the tools and I hope the kit's being taken care of now. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting!

The 6mm allen wrench is not Campagnolo. I purchased mine from the General Manager at Phil Wood.
@JimLangley16 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching Tom. Phil Wood was an amazing individual and it was always fun talking with him. You're almost correct but the tool that isn't Campagnolo is a Cinelli Allen wrench and the size is 7mm (not 6mm). As you probably know, Cinelli stems often had 7mm bolts so you needed a 7 in your kit. Thanks again 🙏
