Let me dissect some of the misconception they made probably cause they refer to shogi pieces when playing chess. Disclaimer: I'm not a good chess or shogi player, I just know some basics. I can also be wrong in which case, I apologize. With that out of the way, here's some things to broaden the horizon regarding this clip. I'll try to explain things as simple as I can. That being said, I won't explain every pieces available in both chess and shogi. I'll just mention how they get the idea for certain piece's movements. Chess is as you all can see, the game in the clip. Shogi, on the other hand, in a glance, is quite similar to chess but it's played at a broader board, more pieces and (probably) more rules than chess. When they moved the pawn, it's the same as shogi. In shogi, you have pawns and they all move 1 step forward. The difference with chess is in shogi, the pawn can only capture what's in front of them (1:30). That's why they are shocked when Izuru's can't capture Roberu's piece when Roberu's put his piece in front of Izuru's pawn (8:15). Also in case you're wondering, chess' pawns can move 2 blocks if they haven't moved yet but shogi's pawns can't. When they moved the horse (2:31) or called knight in chess, it's similar to how you move a piece called keima in shogi. Unlike chess that can go in 8 directions, horse in shogi can only move forward (you'll see a lot of shogi pieces follow this rule of only moving forward). Probably why Izuru moved the horse to the front again and didn't know that Roberu can just take his horse with Roberu's own horse (2:45). When Izuru played around with the drumcan or known as rook in chess, he said at least it can move backward (3:03). This is also a reference to 2 pieces that quite similar in shogi which are lance and rook. Rook in shogi is just like the rook in chess though in shogi, you only have 1 rook. You only have 1 bishop as well so rook and bishop are really valuable. In shogi, they have 2 lances. Lance can move forward as much as they want like rook but can't move backwards nor sideways. That's why Izuru was relieved that it can move backward so it's a rook rather than lance. Hence you can also see that he naturally just moved the rook sideways later on (5:08). Chess' queen has no equivalent in movement in shogi. That's why Roberu and Izuru are shocked when Izuru captured Roberu's queen (4:54). They never fully explored the queen's movement as well so we didn't get to see their reaction to the insane movement queen's has compared to shogi's. The closest in shogi I'd say is gold general. It's really valuable but it can only move 1 step to all directions except diagonally backwards. Probably the reason why Roberu only tried to move his queen 1 block instead of going overboard like Izuru tho I highly doubt it. As mentioned before, shogi only has 1 bishop. Since there are 2 bishops in chess, I think they assumed the bishop moves like silver general. Silver general is a piece in shogi that can move 1 step to 5 directions. The directions are all 4 diagonals and forward. Probably why they didn't move the bishop to a long distance and Roberu tried to capture Izuru's pawn (8:44). Roberu commented that he entered Izuru's base (10:06) is also a rule in shogi called promotion. When a piece managed to get into the last 3 lines of enemy's area (the base) the piece can be flipped to reveal a (usually) much more powerful piece that has a different move they can make. Most of the pieces will be able to move like gold general after being promoted which means gold general won't be able to be promoted cause it can't have any more advanced movement. The exception to this is the rook and bishop that can be promoted into king like movement while maintaining their unique long movement of a rook and bishop. Promotion is necessary cause most pieces can only move forward and thus getting a promotion is sometimes necessary. The only exception to this promotion is when you want to keep a certain unique movement some pieces have like lances or silver generals. Note the CAN be flipped cause you get to choose whether you want to actually promote the piece or let it be what it is. Also probably why they complained about no new things the bishop can do once Roberu entered Izuru's base and tried to capture the rook (highly unlikely but you never know ;D). In shogi, you can use your opponent's pieces that you've captured. You can put it anywhere you like but if I recall correctly, freshly placed captured pieces can't be promoted the turn they returned to the battlefield. That's why Izuru tried to use his captured pieces (7:54). Also as a note, it's interesting to say that shogi can do that cause they don't use color to differentiate which piece is who's. Your pieces are the one facing your opponent. I probably missed some references but I do hope this helps you getting the rough idea where they come from. As I said before, i can be perfectly wrong as I have no way to prove what they think at the time. In any case, if you read this far, might as well learn some shogi. Or chess. Or anything really. It's your life, you spent it reading this, you can spend it anywhere else. Good luck and enjoy the rest of your day. Or night.

In high school some of my friends played "bughouse" chess. It was a 2v2 game, played on two chessboards, each player was playing chess on one of the boards, and each time was white on one board and black on the other. If you captured an opponent's piece, you handed it to your partner, who could deploy it shogi-style on their board as their turn instead of moving. Your opponent and your partner had the same color pieces, sidestepping the colored pieces problem of using shogi deployment in chess. If either board had a checkmate, that was the game. It was actually real-time as well, which made for some interesting pacing scenarios

I mean It is very similar. Rename the pieces, change their moves and numbers (not two rooks/bishops but one) add few new pieces and promotions, one extra line in formation and ability to put taken pieces back in game and thats pretty much all (even the logic of "weak but important pawns who form front line", "stronger pieces with special moves" and "one limited in movement piece that needs to be protected" is there). Its still more similar than shogi and otello or checkers plus the goal and history of game is similar (in the meaning of both simulate battle and should train strategists, also both are seen as games of intelectuals and lords). Not same in rules, but same in the thought and goal behind the games with similar design in some places.
