I still own my 88 Conquest TSI. I bought it in 1996. I rebuilt the engine with forged pistons. A Schneider cam and spec clutch. 18 G turbo and a Marnel head. Chrome hard pipes and a blow off valve. The car is still quick on the street and turns heads. Fun car to drive.

1:08 Mitsubishi was fully 2 years behind the Nissan 910 Bluebird SSS Turbo sedan and Coupe, which had proper multi point EFI and was turbo charged in 1980. This same Z18ET engine was then installed in the S110 Silva as well in 1982. It was a genuine Coupe contender against to Station, with similar power and much less weight. The Station engine had center point fuel injection - basically a rich man's carburettor, the extra 200cc allowed it to make 8kw more power.

TBI just a slightly better carb? I would not say that, but maybe that is because I was around Chevy trucks often. The V8 Chevy trucks got a TBI engine in 1987. It was a huge improvement over the smog carb found in earlier Chevy trucks. You ever deal with a carb that is connected with an O2 sensor? TBI is a massive improvement over that.
