I still own my 88 Conquest TSI. I bought it in 1996. I rebuilt the engine with forged pistons. A Schneider cam and spec clutch. 18 G turbo and a Marnel head. Chrome hard pipes and a blow off valve. The car is still quick on the street and turns heads. Fun car to drive.

I had a Starion (white exterior and red plush inside), loved it!! Destroyed the Mustang/Camero crowd as my HP/weight ratio was MUCH better. Added a simple vaccum control (manual) to increase the boost, for 1980's the thing was crazy fast (197 HP stock, squeezed out 250 HP).

The JDM Starions were faster than the rest of the world as they offered 4G63 turbocharged engines with 150kw & 275nm. They also got a limited edition 250kw AWD model that only weighed 1000kg. I'm surprised that they weren't more popular as they did extremely well with all of their racing victories across the world.

1:08 Mitsubishi was fully 2 years behind the Nissan 910 Bluebird SSS Turbo sedan and Coupe, which had proper multi point EFI and was turbo charged in 1980. This same Z18ET engine was then installed in the S110 Silva as well in 1982. It was a genuine Coupe contender against to Station, with similar power and much less weight. The Station engine had center point fuel injection - basically a rich man's carburettor, the extra 200cc allowed it to make 8kw more power.

TBI just a slightly better carb? I would not say that, but maybe that is because I was around Chevy trucks often. The V8 Chevy trucks got a TBI engine in 1987. It was a huge improvement over the smog carb found in earlier Chevy trucks. You ever deal with a carb that is connected with an O2 sensor? TBI is a massive improvement over that.

We called the Star I on. They were all over the junkyards in the 90's the tbi 2.6 turbo wasn't great compared with the 5mge in the supra. They looked great with huge fenders.

WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ?? Except early days of Turbos, so you didn't shut off the engine UNTIL you gave the turbo a few minutes to spin down & cool off. Great looks, package, layout, features, options, & engine sizes. Love the wide track years.
