I remember those things. Big rusty and noisy. With chain-pulled guillotine doors. Whenever people got smashed by those - they could not restore their breath before riding through 2-3 tram stations. Also as a kid I loved that the door were operated by relays (often exposed into passenger compartment). Since they usually were bodge-repaired they emitted different colors sparks: yellow, green, red, white, depending on the contactor materials bodged into those. 90s were miserable times... But as kids we've seen nuggets of beauty in ugly things.

The video brought back happy memories of living in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, 25 years ago. The KTM-5s epitomise so much of what I loved about Russia then. A few of the routes in Krasnoyarsk still survive, and with roads often now at a standstill thanks to private car ownership of a level which the Soviet town planners could never have imagined, the trams have gone from being the slowest to the fastest means of transport! May they live on long.

Эти трамваи делают в Челябинской области, в гор. Усть-Катав. У нас в Челябинске, трамваи пока ходят, но только потому, что по словам наших властей, разбирать трамвайные пути, и убирать контактную сеть, экономически не выгодно! (Читай много с этого не получишь)! Сами трамваи в плачевном состоянии, но пока держаться. Новые вагоны не закупают, по словам наших чиновников, трамваи ходят по рельсам, а потому не подвержены ударным нагрузкам на ходвую, как троллейбусы, или автобусы! Потому их можно и не менять, а просто подремонтировать. Прикольно ехать на работу, на трамвае, на котором ездил ещё в детский сад!)) Но у нас дела обстоят ещё не плохо. Был я в Таганроге, так там путейцев просто разогнали, а чтобы снизить аварийность, отключили у трамваев 4-ю и 3-ю ходовые позиции, чтоб сильно не разгонялись! А что, и дёшево и сердито! Во всём мире в больших городах есть гор электро транспорт, только у нас это почему-то не выгодно!

@@alex19712402 в Воронеже ещё печальнее ситуация. Когда-то одна из самых крупных трамвайных сетей была. Ключевое слово когда-то. Пока не пришёл в меры города урод - Ковалёв. Продажная скотина, которая запустила процесс уничтожения всего легкорельсового транспорта в городе. А теперь каждый мер плачется: "Какая же это была ошибка. Нужно вернуть трамвай!", а по факту для этого делается целое ничего. Просто зарабатывают популярность для выборов и пилят бюджет тратя миллионы на планы, проекты и экономические обоснования того, что даже не планируют возвращать. Подозреваю, что при составлении нового ген. плана они употребляли тяжёлые наркотики т.к. они нарисовали там трамвайную сеть больше чем Московский метрополитен, МЦК и монорельс вместе взятые. У них трамвай до соседнего города идёт! Почему после составления и принятия подобного бреда таких людей не снимают с должностей? Им же очевидно насрать на свою работу!

Oh, I remember one of the KTM-5 was serving in Moscow, near Tulskaya street. I think it was in 2008-2009. And, if you search for pictures of more modern Russian tram cars, you will find out, that the KTM-5's legendary emergency brake design is implemented in nearly all trams, produced after 70's.

Это было зимой, внутри было прохладно, а из окна слепило солнце. Он ехал не спеша, качаясь из стороны в сторону, скрипя, неуклюжий трамвайчик, в салоне было тихо, спокойно и уютно. От этого мне и понравилась поездка на нем. Увы, это была моя первая и последняя поездка не только на КТМ, а на трамваях в целом. Через неделю-две, трамвайную линию в городе у нас закрыли. Thank you for making such videos, mister. These trams remind me of 90's and 00's where there was a lot of these trams. I loved them. They were noisy, bouncy, ringing but they ringed with my heart. I admit, I love trolleybuses more (I don't know of you made a video about them) but trams is such an amazing legacy we have. A wonderfully rugged and versatile tram. I well remember my guide in Novosibersk becoming excited when I asked her to take me for a ride round the city by tram. When a KTM5 arrived at the stop, she loudly exclaimed "Oh good - a Red Devil! I used these when I was a child!" The ride quality was very bouncy and rough, but it was exciting and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

And also, (speaking of prague where I live) most adults living near tram or metro use them to travel to the center. It's faster, more ecologic, you don't need to drive, you can reed or work. Also, If everybody would Instead of Trams and Metro use their own car, the traffic would absolutely fail. European cities are just not prepared for cars.

In the Czech Republic, T3s are knows as reliable and sturdy machines heck the capital city of Prague still has over 400 units, so it would be interesting to know how those over 11 000 trams worked in Russia.

If you get a chance, you should check out the history of the interurban trolleys that would run for many miles at high speeds (even up to 140 kph!) between cities in America during the early 1900’s. In claiming that the KTM 5 is the most numerous tram class in the world, one should bear in mind that the Tatra T4 was identical to the Tatra T3, except that it was a narrower version for certain cities (2.2 rather than 2.5 metres wide). Only for this reason did it have a different class number. The combined total of T3/T4 trams produced was 16,748 including 122 unpowered trailers. It's a pedantic point of course and both the Russian and the Czech tram hold an honorable place at the top of the world statistics board.

9:15 Were they really such a breakthrough? Japan is full of those. In fact, the remaining four 161-series units in Osaka and Sakai are not only single-carriage double-ended cars, but, with them currently doing their 93rd year of service, are the oldest tramcars in regular service. To put it into perspective, these trams were already 35 years old when KTM-5's started production. And they're still in almost mint condition. Most pre WW2 trams were single-car double-ended models.

2-sided cabin tram-cars were never very common in Russia 'coz almost every city with trams had (and has) place for tram turnarounds. Probably the most common 2-sided trams are in Saint-Petersburg

This mode of transportations - tram - may come back when fuel cost will restrain transport in many nations by 2040's; and it will make inroads again partially and succesfully in some areas of the many nations. Well In Prague, where I live, trams are still (along with metro) the backbone of public transport...And of whole transport...without them, so many people would need to use car and traffic in Prague would probably fail. But Its true Prague has 3. biggest tram network, so idk how it works somewhere else.

Привет из Челябинска! В нашем городе самый большой парк КТМ-5 в мире, их около 160 единиц. У нас была целая программа по превышению КТМ в низкопольный трамвай. Целых 5 лет из депо выходили очень красивые и аккуратные модификации, но последний, полностью низкопольный кузов, из-за повреждений рамы так и не был собран в полноценную машину и списан. Но сейчас даже у нас (а видео из нашего города было в первой части, когда вы говорили про невозможность эксплуатации новых трамваев на кривых и старых рельсах) КТМ-5 нашлась замена. По заказу Москвы на Кировском заводе был разработан трамвай 71-628 или КТМ-28 (в период выпуска КТМ-5 в Советском Союзе изменились правила присвоения названий трамваям и он успел получит имя 71-605, следующий стал 71-608 и так далее). Так вот один опытный КТМ-28 привезли на испытания в Челябинск, прежде чем отправить 90 его собратьев в Москву. Губернатор Челябинской области проехался на нем и решил купить 30 таких трамваев в наш город. В другом городе-рекордсмене по числу КТМ-5 в регулярной эксплуатации, Магнитогорске, что на юге Челябинской области руководство Металлургического комбината давно купило для города новые вагоны КТМ-19 и КТМ-23, а также машины производства завода УралТрансМаш из Екатеринбурга. Теперь кварталы четырехэтажного Соцгорода (Социалистического Города), спроектированного в 1929 году немецкими и американскими архитекторами, объезжает не угловатый КТМ-5, а его потомки

В Новосибирск в 2019 году начали поставлять обноски КТМ-19 из Москвы. И каждый день я видел, как обносок проезжал мимо остановки, потому что в нём что-то наебнулось. Но старый добрый КТМ-5 верно служил до последнего. На правом берегу уже давно не видал его. Увы. Прощай, старый друг.

Ironically enough, famous in Russia (especially in Moscow), as well as in other countries of Eastern Europe, the Czech Tatra-3 trams were slightly modified licensed American PCC trams (built by St. Louis Car Company and Pullman Standard since the early 30s until the early 50s of the last century). Modified licensed PCC trams were also built in Spain, Italy and Belgium.
