An airliner will have an Inertial reference system that allows it to track its location without external signals, but just like any other gyroscope-like it gets less precise over time. They drift over long flights and need other data to account for that. They also need a known starting point which comes at startup from GPS. One cool alternative system is celestial navigation like what was in the sr-71, but is not as practical at low altitude flight.
@destari5917 Жыл бұрын
There's also the problem of in the case of spoofing, which data does the airliner trust, it's GPS signals or a potentially failing inertial measurement? A lot of these systems just aren't built with malicious intervention in mind and can't account for these things.
@Delease Жыл бұрын
The technical challenge for building a navigation system that doesn't require external inputs is cumulative error. The self-contained systems I'm aware of use an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which measures the forces acting on a craft. Because F = ma, and you know the mass of your craft, you can compute acceleration from measurements of force. You can then use numerical integration to compute an estimate of position. However, the errors in the measurement of F accumulate over time in the calculated position and lead to drift. To correct this, a positional fix needs to be obtained from an external system. In the past these were ground based radio beacons, but today we seem to rely more on space-based infrastructure. That being said, NASA was building IMUs in the 60s which were very accurate (see the Apollo PGNCS). So if expense really wasn't concern, we could probably produce IMUs with very low drift.
@mikes2381 Жыл бұрын
The 1960s NASA IMUs are legit amazing... For the time. Still very precise though to be clear. Now we have either that same level of precision for 2 or 3 orders of magnitude lower cost, or we have far more accurate systems that cost still an order of magnitude less.

Regarding the British Library thing: if you have a reader's card with access to the rare materials, you have to interview so they know you won't walk out with the 500-1000 year old manuscripts and have a way to get ahold of you if you do something wrong. That interview includes where you work.

I think aircraft must be able to use an IMU if they can't trust GPS - so I would also guess (since I'm not an engineer) that they probably use both.

SIM swapping is sad. But only having SMS 2FA is more sad.
@Prophes0r Жыл бұрын
Let's be fair here. SMS 2FA is still better than 90% of users that just use a single unchanging password for every service that is written down in 10 places and is likely just a combination of 2-3 guessable bits of personal information like birthdays or addresses. Other than weirdos like me who use a Yubikey to log into homelab services that literally have nothing useful on them except error logs from my dumb misconfigurations, people only use 2FA when a service FORCES them to anyway.

The navigation system that took the man to the moon was packed into a plane and got the aircraft within metres of its destination. With 50 years of advancement, why not in modern planes? Seems crazy. You can somewhat replace GPS with innertial navigation and less precise ballistic missiles use exactly that. But whether that is accurate enough to steer an jumbo with the increased wind drift, i don't know. The great benefit of GPS is its robustness though. It is relatively hard to manipulate. On the other hand there are still multiple wars going on in the middle east right now. So assuming electronic warfare isn't that much of a stretch...
@quintit Жыл бұрын
Every plane has a regular magnetic compass, but they can only be used to get going in a general direction since they will drift whenever the plane shifts.

Here is a rabbit hole for you law schools won't ever let you use Wikipedia as it's editable by anyone case and point the Franklin credit scandal is seen as a hoax by Wikipedia and a guy who interviewed the victims couldn't find a way to update the information
@drstewart Жыл бұрын
What do you think "case and point" means? Any place with even a semblance of integrity won't let you use Wikipedia as a source. Grade schools included. It's meant to give an overview or a starting place for research, not a final destination. The Franklin credit scandal allegations were found to be a hoax by two juries. Not Wikipedia. If the guy who interviewed the victims couldn't find a way to update the information then he doesn't know how to read a webpage. The edits for the entry are presently locked due to too many alternative information enthusiasts trying to hijack it and turn it into their version of the facts. The content discussing this, including potential sources for the dubious claims, is publicly available on the entry's Talk page, which is a record of the edits or evolution of an article. Not a rabbit hole. Maybe an illustration of how, in a context of greater access to information than at any other time in human history, people walk around thinking "My unsubstantiated theories are as true as your provable facts."

They could use terrain mapping to determine location, it was used for missiles guidance pre GPS. Just load terrain data into the system and it could navigate based solely on terrain features, isn't cheap, has some issues but its a known technology for a back up. For nights you could use star constellations to determine location as well, computers are perfectly capable of processing that kinda information in real time for a second back up.
