My sister called mortified after reading this verse. I had not read Judges so we both mourned the loss and horror of men and evil. I'm going to share this with her as I really love the way you showed Gods redemption... men are evil but God came in flesh to save us from ourselves. As you were closing I thought of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery, that fact that "they" all turned away, old first... God bless you from South Africa

God's redemption? The plan to save the tribe of Benjamin was to abuse more women. The only lesson to be learned from this story is, if a man is treating you rotten, don't trust him to be better. Your forgiveness will only make things more dangerous. The only way to protect yourself from an abuser is to stay away from him. Yes, for your own sake, it is better not to hold a grudge. Trusting him to put your best interests above yours can be a fatal mistake.

Yes, it does equate to behavior today. The problem is, in most sermons, these evil men are condemned as homosexuals. This is not true! They were rapists, otherwise they would have not harmed the woman! There goal was to denigrate the stranger who came to their town. When they failed to get their hands on the man, they abused his woman. Rape is not a sexual attack. Predators enjoy the powerlessness and humiliation of their victims.

I learned from this story that if things are bad enough in a marriage that you leave, don't let him soft soap you into going back with him because there is a good chance you'll end up dead. His cruelty was encouraged by her willingness to return with him. The Bible also says when he awoke the next morning and found her on the step, he told her to get up so they could leave. How could he have slept when he heard her torturous screams? Then when he realized she was dead, he put her on his animal and carried her to a place where HE was safe! To further prove how little he thought of her, he didn't even have the decency to bury her. According to the law of Moses, anyone who touched a dead body became unclean. Still, he sent her dismembered body parts all over the country! In my opinion, he was the most despicable man in the Bible. She is called a whore, but her actions prove she only left for her safety. She didn't run off with a lover. She didn't become a prostitute. She went back to her father's house for protection. The Levite was pure evil. He didn't even marry her, meant she was his exclusive property. If she would have had children, they would be denied the right of inheritance. Just because he was a "man of God" should also be a warning that you must trust your spiritual leaders by their character, not their title. When you were comparing the story of Sodom to the rapists in Judges, you over looked another parallel in the two accounts. When Lot's wife looked back, she turned into a pillar of salt. When the Levite's concubine consented to return with him, she also lost her life. As for the reason Rachel died in childbirth, she stole her father's gods. When Jacob was accused of the theft, he said whoever is guilty should die. During the search, Rachel said she was menstruating so to search the camel she was sitting on was unclean. The truth was she was already pregnant with Benjamin. Rachel's death was tragic, but it was God's punishment for her theft, her lie and Jacob's inadvertent curse.

All very true! I was also shocked that she was referred to as a 'harlot' simply for leaving him and fleeing to her father's house for protection. (It may have been seen as an offense to his position, both as a Levite and a man..?) I honestly doubt that the writers of the Bible intended the information in it to be used as an excuse for neglecting practical wisdom. After reading 2 Timothy 3:16-17, I realized that the Bible is a very practical narrative, from a very practical Spirit with an objective perspective. It resulted in a shift in me that caused me to more closely examine the attitudes and actions of the people in the narrative and realized that a great many of them (people, actions and attitudes) did NOT have God's approval despite position, rank, title or status.. far from it!

Absolutely love the subjects and how they are explained, so exciting to find your site. There are strange subjects in the bible that is not talked about or even read, such as the Satyrs in the bible I believe there is a lot more to them than you hear about, Christians do not like to talk about certain subjects or just don't believe in them, you get a lot more information in ancient manuscripts. most people only want to hear everything is nice and full of Love which is so wrong. I know a lot of the Bible stories nobody talks about. That's why it makes me soooo mad when people pull verses out of context to prove an opinion that is the direct deposit of what Jesus said in the Gospels. I'm far from being a saint, but I at least know what Christ said. You can't hate people who are different than you are and be a Good Christian at the same time. There are so many warnings about following "religious" leaders who twist the rules to suit themselves. I fear for people who have their hearts turned to hate because of what they've been hearing from pulpits and those who use religion for personal gain.

Homosexual sin is the root cause of all the problems in this story. They said they wanted to have physical relationship with the Levite both the host and the levite offered their women, but homosexual sin is the most wicked sin, they wanted to commit homosexual sin with him, he rejected and offered his concubine so in order to hurt him all the more for rejecting them, they brutally raped & murdered his concubine. And imagine this type of sin started a long time back since days of old, Sodom & Gomorrah also same sin, so when you see these types of sin prevalent, then destruction is almost at hand, that also it's divine we can't stop, or has no power to stop, the saddest thing is that, I'm afraid others also who don't know anything might fall under the same fate especially if we as Christian thinks it's alright, the only thing we can do to safe from such a catastrophe is to warn others atleast and that also with hearts ❤ full of love, mercy, compassion divine wisdom and understanding, since this is a sensitive issue if there is no divine anointing to speak it will be very difficult to speak, it'll only leads to arguments, but in the church or in any Christian congragation, meeting, service and discussion through preaching or teaching, or personal counselling. No correction, no conviction or no condemnation of sin will draw us closer to the end, that also we can only condemn sin but love others whether sinners or not as ourselves. So let us be ready if the end is near.

Bull! Those men weren't homosexuals. They were RAPISTS! If they were strictly homosexuals, they would have left the woman alone! Rape is not an expression of sexual desire. It is subjugation and humiliation. They went after the man's woman to embarrass him that he was unable to protect her from them. What they didn't realize was he couldn't have cared less. He went to sleep that night while she was being tortured to death. The Levite picked up her dead body and left. It wasn't until HE was out of danger that he sought retribution. When the rest of the rapists tribe members didn't turn them over for punishment, no one would allow any of them to marry their daughters. No wonder. I wouldn't want my daughter to marry someone who would protect such vermin.

I think it's such a horrible sin because we are designed to reproduce and have families. The sad thing is the way the world is set up we don't want children because it's so expensive. It was designed that way to turn our hearts from children and the family it is so sad. It is really going against your nature. No peace can come from that. Sexual satisfaction for the moment but a perverse kind of satisfaction. Sad

The Holy Bible is from a Holy God who is separated from sin. But we humans are so sinful by nature that even in the 21s century such utterly depraved, cruel and inhuman acts are committed by some to our shock and horror in many countries. This proves that the essential underlying human nature has not changed from the Stone Age to our ultra-modern Digital Age. The Bible is a realistic book and does not white wash raw human nature and portays events as they occurred in the past to teach us the negative and tragic consequences of sin and draw moral lessons from them. Thanks for your brilliant exposition of a very sad and heart-rending incident recorded in the Scriptures.

I actually just read the story this morning and was horrified. I don't think it's because I never read it, I think it's because as Christians we skirt around and avoid passages like these. I sat cried as I read it literally . I prayed over it and ask God why, why is this story in there and why isn't it specifically condemned by God? I think it doesn't have to be. It goes without saying. Basically this is what happens in the absence of God. These are not godly people. They have turned away from "their first love" who was the Lord. In the prevalence of evil, the innocent suffer greatly. We see this happening all thru history. Now consider how Jesus treated women. ALL women. The woman with the issue of blood, the woman caught in adultery, the woman with many husbands at the well, the woman with the affliction in her back, the widow whose son died, and on and on. When we look at the story through the lens of the life of Jesus we see it for what it is. A complete absence of reverance of God brings about a void of compassion and decency, and chaos, hardheadedness and suffering follow.

@@ChildofGod-g8f Considering that he held the title of a Levite, he was a man of God, but, let us also consider that even if a man of God, does something evil, then is considered someone who is rebelling against God, for example, king Saul, king David, King Salomon, Now, considering that he did not do anything to protect his woman, because the concubine was, at the end of the day, his woman, his wife, he became a Levite rebelling against God, he became a coward, I am not judging him, but his cowardice in that text is evident, his deeds accuse him.

You don't have to be a woman to find this story heartbreaking 💔. The poor, the sick, the crippled, the widows all were treated badly. Not all women were treated badly in that culture.....where you stood in society played a big role in how you were perceived. Male or female. Don't make the written word of God about gender bashing 😢

@@dankelly8035 oh my goodness dankelly8035…I think you may have misunderstood my comment…for that I am so sorry if I have accidentally offended you…I do not wish to offend anyone..that’s the hard thing about texts …you don’t get to hear the tone of the voice in how’s it’s said. I love Men! My Dad , my deceased Grandpas , my Husband and my Seven Sons…I’m definitely not a man basher ….I’m for Men!!! I feel like a lot of men are getting a bad rap theses days…I believe Men and Women each have their own God given roles to fulfill … theses roles should complement each other.. and of course respect each other….the reason I was so upset and saddened by the incident where they threw the Woman out to be raped to death to save the Man was because it was just so plain awful and the fact that it is in our scriptures and wasn’t condemned makes me feel like that maybe we (women) don’t matter…..And I confess I did refer to those MEN that threw the Woman out to her death… as cowards…what else would they be labeled as? Anyway I hope this clears some things up…wishing you and yours the very best🤗

@@risinglogosbear1208 Not in the context of the ancient world. It was kind of a less formal version of a wife. You have to avoid analyzing the situation through modern concepts, something most people don't bother to do. The fact that the Levite had to convince his concubine to come back with him, rather than forcing her to do so, should tell you that she wasn't simply a slave.

(2:00) But the men of the city surrounding the house demanding to *abuse* the Levite. In this case "Abuse" is used as an euphemism for "having sex" with the Levite man. Which is an abomination to the Most High's POV. *"If a man lies with a man as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination;..."* *Leviticus 18:22* In this video they soften up the word, to make it more palatable for today's rainbow society to participate in. That is why I like to read the original text to get an understanding of what was going on at that point and time. ✌🏾

This appalling story invites us to look in the mirror at our own human nature. It invites us to look honestly at our own behaviour and our capacity for cruelty. We must feel compassion for our fellow human being and resolve not only to be kind, but also to be brave and stand up against brutality and abuse. The Bible is deeply feminist and depicts as heinous the killing of a woman because, as God says to Eve “You are the mother of all living things”. By killing an innocent, defenceless woman, the people have brought chaos to the natural order and caused the death of the tribe.

The word was designed to teach man kind that I this life the creator is our only authority, and must be followed.just look at Israel today from one misfortune to the next, for the simple facts that they are a stubborn people every tribe wants to do it's own thing. Not what the creator's law the punishment will continue until men realise who is truly in control .

This story explains why the widow, who was a beautiful women, should not have taken it upon herself to find a husband. Because she had no money for dowry she ended up disrespected by the men. She ends up as a low status concubine. By law her deceased husband's brother should have taken her in. If he had no interest she should have been taken to the priest to get help. Or, her son could have appealed to a priest for a decision. Instead, she went off on her own to fix the problem. Unhappy with the Levite she left him, but since he thought of her as property he went after her. There is a question as to whether the Levite got paid by the men to use her in which case the Levite has recovered his money for his property and no longer cares.

This is a well writen presentation of the story, but there is some incorrect interpretation here which this post will address, hopefully for good. There is a line added in the Masoretic Text, used almost universally by Protestants, since at the time of the Reformation it was incorrectly believed to be the oldest version, since it was in Hebrew. The line is right at the start of the story, and it is the one which says that the concubine "played the harlot." The oldest text, the Septuagint, has no such accusation. Once you understand that the Jews altered the text to save face for their priest class, you may see a different meaning in the events at her father's house. . The Levite is shown throughout to be an evil man, so the girl naturally ran away to her father to escape his cruelty in the first place. Now here is where you have it most wrong: the father was doing good by delaying them from leaving because only in his house could he protect his daughter. Their departure is her death warrant. The five days represent the Pentateuch, the books given by Moses to Israel as the Law. The restraining theme is good in this case. It is the determination of the Levite to do whatever he wanted to that causes the tragjc end. His character is evil throughout, and only the rewrite by later Levites casts him as the victim and her death as legally justified as punishment for adultery.
