Well done. I recently switched from ranger to lf. Another lf advantage is it works on Windows too. I would never choose Windows but that's what I'm stuck with at work. PS: Void Linux has a lf package, which includes a man page. I imagine other distros do too.
@BrodieRobertson5 жыл бұрын
The Windows point slipped my mind since I rarely use Windows myself. I don't seem to have a man entry on my system, but if it's available on Void that's a little odd.
@mitch83465 жыл бұрын
I believe the man page I have in Void is a nice touch provided by Void's lf package maintainer. The content is essentially identical to lf -doc, with nice formatting.

8:18 Using the go get command, you won't have to compile it yourself. It will be compiled already. Though you will have to install go first, if not yet installed in your system, and setup $GOPATH or just use the default.

Nice video! But how to run the mappings in lf? As per documentation 'gh' should be a default mapping for 'go home'. Am I supposed to write :gh oder !gh or gh? None of it works. Any suggestions?
@BrodieRobertson4 жыл бұрын
You just have to press gh, there's no extra keys that you have to press. If the key is bound properly then when you press g it will show a menu at the bottom of lf showing you the next keys that you can press to do an action.

Can't you preview images with sxiv by modifying the lfrc file?
@wojteksowinski2483 жыл бұрын
You can open images in sxiv but you’d have to open a separate window. When Brodie said “preview” he meant viewing the file in the file manager without opening it. To do that, you have to integrate a terminal image viewer such as Ueberzug

Great! Now I have to spend a weekend configuring this thing until I am happy. And of course I won't be able to help myself for trying to get the most suitable configuration for my particular specific taste. Oh god, why did I chose linux, whyyyyyy. I would be configuring lf now if I didn't have other things to do :P I am actually trying lf because I need something to use with keybindings as I installed qutebrowser and now using a file manager like nautilus feels obsolete. Who needs a mouse anyways?

0:53 wow, so old video of yours. but honestly, i am liking the audio and voice here better. feels more natrual, more pleasant. i dont know, the audio in your recent videos feels toooooo sharp and also feels like you are forcefully trying to emphasise or accent words certain way. the difference is probably not much, but its impact on the experience is definitely much much noticeable
@maxarendorff65214 жыл бұрын
lf seems great in theory but it doesn't support tabs and other functionality that I'm used to in Ranger. It requires you to learn and customize other tools to be able to have that functionality, and I'm not going to learn tmux just to have tabs in my file manager.
@BrodieRobertson4 жыл бұрын
I have literally never felt any desire to have tabs in my file manager. I'm a fan of having a very stripped down file manager, I'm not going to even touch most of the Ranger features.
@maxarendorff65214 жыл бұрын
@@BrodieRobertson Interesting. How do you copy stuff then? Do you open two instances of lf or do you just go back and forth manually between different folders? If you like minimal file managers you should probably also check out "nnn" and "fff" if you haven't already.
@BrodieRobertson4 жыл бұрын
@@maxarendorff6521 I'll usually copy and then jump to the place I want to paste in. I've got basically all of file system that I access semi frequently aliased to use key binding so it's no slower than just having multiple tabs. I've heard of nnn and fff but I just haven't checked them out
@med50324 жыл бұрын
@@maxarendorff6521 make use of markers. you can do '' (two single quotes), to go back where you were. and you also can just have two terminals if you're using a tiling window manager.

@@med5032 Markers are an alternative and yes I do use BSPWM but I'd still prefer having tabs as having to have two windows open for a file manager is a waste of space, particularly on a small screen.
