Surely Patrick's relationship with his life long partner and his writing skills were God's providence rather than grace? Grace is eternal Truth of who we really are, which Jesus loving sacrifice offers to us. Providence is God's hand in human history. Perhaps David's understanding was a protestant interpretation, rather than Thomist.
