@@davidbrummell5393 The question of Esenin's literary background is an intriguing one. His formidable knowledge of Russian and world literature came not primarily from his upbringing but from his prodigious reading and his discussions over the years with friends and colleagues. His generation of Russian writers were avid students of literature, from the ancient world to the modern. Many of them (but not Esenin, who was monolingual) were famous translators of French, German, Armenian and Georgian literature, to name a few. He associated closely with brilliant authors and critics, spending endless hours in discourse with them on literary themes. Esenin himself was well versed in the classics. He draws much inspiration directly from Pushkin, among others. Though he made it a point to gallivant about in rustic dress as the self-styled 'last poet of the village', he was a sophisticated observer of the world scene. Far from being simple and undemanding, his prosody is intricate, mature and innovative.

I can thoroughly recommend "Wholly Esenin" by Roger Pulvers (published by Balestier Press, 2020) for the freshness and vitality of the translations and for the informative and perceptive notes.
