I like how Boruto used Ao to expand on the idea of people as tools. Where Ao believed himself to be a tool who was no longer capable of being a shinobi after experiencing the tradegies of war, in the end he died as one to save Boruto. In dub he even has the same voice actor as Zabuza. Really cool stuff

Maybe Ao is actually that Hyuga in Bingo Book next to Itachi and a Main Branch member that defected. It was his other eye that got implanted and obviously changed his appearance significantly to hide.......Shisui's mission was to recover it.
