I've seen people dying played for jokes often enough, so I don't see why toxic relationships should be off the table. The show acknowledges that Eska is crazy and mistreating Bolin, even if it's played for laughs. I'd maybe agree with it being problematic if the show made Bolin the bad guy in this somehow, but they never do.
