Excellent little documentary. I met L S Lowry in 1966 when I was 14 years old. I popped into the Monks Hall Museum in Eccles on my way home from High School. They were holding an exhibition of his work. I recognized him immediately and he greeted me and asked me what I thought of his work (I was the only person in the gallery) He was a very quietly spoken person and seemed very old to me but as time has passed I treasure that memory of that meeting. I had also visited the Salford Art Gallery from a very young child , I too loved that Victorian street with the typical room settings of the time. I remember a large musical piece that you could put an old 1d in and it would play. Then up to the rooms with the biggest collection of Lowry's work in the world. Those who doubted his artist ability only needed to look at his life drawing studies, this was a man with real talent. I left the UK in 1981 to live in South Africa, but returned to M/c for my first visit back in December 2017. Needless to say I visited the Salford Keys and the Lowry. It was very comforting that his work should be finally recognized and house so well, for a new generation to see and enjoy. Cheers from Africa.

I just watched this today (7th February 2021). Like you, I have been truly inspired by Lowry ever since my teens (I’m now 76 yrs) What inspires me the most is that he was honest to himself regardless of what others thought about him, or his art. His personal passion for capturing the things he saw, and the way “HE” saw and painted them is what made him nothing less than an honest genius! As a painter myself, I have had the privilege to paint / reproduce some of Lowry’s paintings that I particularly like, and now hang up on MY wall: it has helped my to ‘feel’ something of the great man. Thank you so much for posting your video. And yes, the final bit in the cemetery is a lovely tribute to him. The unassuming headstone is (in my opinion), just as he would have wanted it I’m sure. Thanks again.

The old gallery was better. But a year before my Dad died, aged 80, when I think he knew that he was near his end, we sat for the third time in that little mini cinema thing in front of the entrance to the Lowry exhibition in that new spaceship thing, and watched the very moving "Mr Lowry" video they showed (maybe still do'), my Mum and Dad, my wonderful wife, our son, and Mum and Dad's other two Grandchildren. It is a very moving video. At the end, the expression of melded sadness and joy on my Dad's, this tough but kind and gentle old soldier's face was something I will never forget while still alive. A great, but totally normal, old Salford lad. It's the way they made them, isn't it?

I as a child too discovered Lowery at the Salford museum with the street down below his artwork. That was many years ago as I am now 60. It has been heart warming to come across this vlog made by somebody so much younger who is fascinated by this amazing artist in these modern times enough to invest his time and effort making this short film to bring to life Lowery's story for others to enjoy. It has been a pleasure to watch. And I drove past the bronze statue of Lowery in Mottram every day going to work for 6 years. It used to bring a smile to my face then. And did again today. Many thanks.

I believe that the owners of the house after finding the floorboard, well I again believe that they are now on display at The Lowry. I have another three mins to each of your video, again, I believe, this is becoming a habit! I think, not sure Lesley Ann Downy, the moors victim is also buried in the same cemetery. Brilliant, it's taken me a year to get around to watching this. 🙄 I'm also a big fan of his, when I was little it was said that he visited his niece just up the road from us in Gatley. I was only seven when he died but I do remember seeing an old man visiting the house and being told "that's Lowry". Our estate was built on the grounds of a merchants house, a big grand place that was knocked down in 1964. I've since found three or four sketches/paintings that Lowry did of the old house. So he must have been familiar with the area well before his niece bought one of the houses. Apparently her house had many of his paintings on the walls. She may not have been his niece, who knows.. but I like the story and I to think I did see him.

What a wonderful compliment to L S Lowry. Like his paintings the simple idea of following where he lived produced a beautiful story. The depiction of poor people, rich in life. Two dimensional and at the same time showing such depth. I think he would have enjoyed watching this. I also think he would have appreciated his work being displayed in what, for now, is a modern building is my answer to your question in your film DM. The criticism he received for his paintings being out of date during his own life and his seemingly strange relationship with time, as manifested by the many clocks in his house set arbitrarily, says to me that he felt depicting the truth as he saw it, honestly and without bias is what he championed. Truth is beyond time. The man with the red nose and eyes looks at us squarely in our faces revealing his caring soul. Dan Smith

Fun fact: Lowery mixed all his own paints. The yellow occar colour was made from poisonous concoction involving the use of lead. Edit- I cried again and again! And more when the end music came on we sang that in school in the 90s 😢 you really have a way with respect, I hope schools take on board your approach to history, you would be a fabulous lecturer.

I remember the old street and shops of yesteryear being opened up at the museum and Peel Park.. I read many many years ago, soon after his death, that he left some secret paintings that left people shocked and surprised.. they were classed as vulgar and rude, as they were nudes etc. He left them to a lady, I think she was his secretary or someone close family wise.. it was on film ( news) of these paintings when they became known.. he had a secret passion for these types of paintings.. the "Matchstick Men" style is still popular with many people. Didn't ELO band sing the song of " Pictures of Matchstick Men" referring to Lowry..

Have really enjoyed watching this and so pleased that you mentioned where he was born. Lots of people think he was from Salford but he was actually from Barrett St Old Trafford. I lived near there from 1946 - 1968 and have walked down that street many times before it was demolished along with the house I grew up in. Such a shame there doesn't seem to be any photos or film of Barrett St. but of course, we didn't know at the time he lived there that he would become such a well known artist. Thanks again for making this, it was really well done.

When my wife and our son and me came back from Germany to visit my parents in the 1990s and early 2000s, we often went to the old Art Gallery and Museum on Peel Park Cresent. The "new" Lowry building down by Number Nine Dock (where my Grandad was "Foreman Stevedore" in his later life, after many years at sea) is nice enough, but the old Peel building is part of Lowry's time, and a much better setting. "Daft Monkey", your videos are great. Thank you.
