The 35mm frame and narrow field of view adds SO much to the feeling of isolation i can't believe it wasn't done earlier, its actually genius
@Novum_YT3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it definitely is that. I used to hate people messing with the viewing ratio but now I'm in widescreen I can see it for what it is a lot more. I think WW1984 did it recently and it was really the only part I enjoyed. But yeah, I think this oppressive square ratio is so good for forcing the viewer to think on what's outside the lens and for forcing them to focus on what's within it. It just provides a really high degree of control over where the audience is looking. Thanks for watching dude!
@gregoryalexanderswart71383 жыл бұрын
If you enjoyed the claustrophobic atmosphere I recommend you check out Son of Saul. It's a Hungarian film about a jewish prisoner-made guard at Auschwitz. The aspect ratio is 1.375:1 and with the exception of the first and last scenes the film consists exclusively of close-ups following the main character through his hellish adventures in the camp. There are no long shots, there is no relief. It feels like you're there in the camp with the main character, a truly morbid and unique experience.

Prolly nobody will read that after 4 years, but J wanted to say how amazing job you did and how helpful this video was. Also in reference to this interpretation that Howard killed Winslow, as we know Howard said that after “the accident” he only wanted to smoke. We can also see that first thing he does after realisation he killed Wake, is smoking a cigarette which confirm that he killed Winslow in first place.

I’m pretty surprised that such a thorough breakdown failed to mention meaning of the gull Howard murdered. The left eye was missing, just like the head of Howard’s predecessor, & Wake said gulls contained the souls of dead sailors. The shared disfigurement & taunting of Howard is a giveaway, but also Wake’s violent reaction to Howard scoffing at the notion the birds were more than pests. In this context I believe the lighthouse station is more a metaphor for the afterlife & the light is an ascension to a kind of heaven, “relief” or “salvation” as the former assistant believed. Wake is gatekeeper (likely a dead soul himself who is just as drawn to the light but can restrain himself because he has duties to fulfill) who eventually gets Howard to confess his sins. Howard’s response to knowing his own unworthiness is to force his way into the light. The light of course rejects him & he falls into purgatory, consumed by & thus becoming a gull just like the man in his place before him.
@Novum_YT4 жыл бұрын
I really like that reading dude! Thanks so much for commenting!
@AmbroseCadwell4 жыл бұрын
Yeah deffo on first watch I assumed it was all some kind of purgatory deal where Poseidon or suchlike (Dafoe, or perhaps he's a ferryman figure) is weighing up Pattinson's soul for drowning a man in Hudson Bay. I took the brutal gull killing to suggest that despite his insistence to the contrary he did actually kill the guy rather than just watching, since he's shown to be a big liar shortly beforehand anyway & the gull killing shows he's inclined to violence.

this, to my mind, is a much more accurate and astute analysis than the video to which the comment is attached. You're spot on about Canady, from discussing it with people in the comments here I'm 100% certain you're right. This was a amazing video, Thanks so much for all the work you put into this. I'm sorry that it seems KZbin did a silly towards you because a video made this well it's a shame it's not getting the attention it deserves. I wanna say right now the main thing I like about this video is you don't feel the need to speak 100 miles per hour, you take your time with telling everything and that, that we need more of. As someone who gets overstimulated it feels lately by too much noise, too fast of speech and etc, it's nice to be able to listen to a video (I typically multi-task with watching/listening to videos and doing other tasks) and not feel like it's bringing me anxiety from overload on the senses. Enough on the quality of the video and more on the subject the video is on about. I finished watching the movie a few hours ago and out of the videos I found seeing what people said the movie was about, yours is the best. I love how the comparisons to mythology (pardon if not using the right term) with the gods and titans, because watching this movie it was a lot to unpack but I did sense and suspect there was some mythology up in there. As for all the sexuality, I did pick up on that but I didn't really realize the full depth of it like you describe. It's honestly a interesting movie because it has psychological aspects from the characters past and behaviors, but it also has the other side of the coin that makes you wonder what is real and isn't. I've always been intrigued by how the mind works when it comes to madness, how it flips things on us as either a defense or just avoiding confronting the sins(?). Anywho, enough rambling. Thanks for this video and I appreciate all the time and effort you put into it. I'll take a dive in your other content as well. Keep up the good work!

I would also want to remark about how what you refer to as prison homosexuality is as much asserting ones own dominance as it is sexuality so the implied rape scene could very much be interpreted to be a matter of Man overpowering and asserting his dominance over the Gods as it is about Ephraim embracing his closeted homosexuality.

Regarding Howard turning the body around and seeing himself after "spilling his beans", the body is actually wearing the real Ephraim Winslow's clothes. I just double-checked and it's the exact coat (check the distinct sleeve pattern) he wears in Howard's memories/flashbacks of him.

Thank you for summarizing and thus confirming my thoughts about this film. I'm not one who is usually a fan of sci-Fi/horror films, but the performances of Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe are just so good, I had to watch the film a second time (with subtitles) to actually confirm the context. I certainly wouldn't be able express my thoughts on it as thoroughly as you have here. Great work.

That's extremely kind of you to say Lin! Thank you so much and I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie so much! Pattinson is rapidly becoming my new favourite actor!

What a great film! The acting is stellar and the atmosphere, thanks to the cinematic techniques used, is very disturbing (in the way we like, of course, don't we?) on so many levels. Another aspect I really loved is the attention to detail. I have a soft spot for directors who put a lot of intriguing details in their films. Novum, I watched your videos on Hereditary and Alien (I just discovered your channel only a few days ago), which happen to be in the top 5 of greatest films of all times in my opinion and now I just started The Lighthouse. Ten minutes in and I just wanted to let you know I'm a fan of your channel now 😅. Greetings from Italy 🇮🇹

Truly enjoyed your breakdown of the movie. I have already seen the film and was confused about the deep lunacy that Rob’s character seems to spiral down into. You have totally cleared up a lot of the imagery that I just wasn’t sure if it was supernatural in nature or if it was all in Rob’s character’s mind. It was awesome. I too loved this film. It reminded me of the Hitchcock films that too were in beautiful black and white. Cinematically this film was truly beautiful and I’ve listened to what Eggers described as how they went about filming this. I truly miss films that are two different characters interacting with just each other and no special effects just pure dramatic perfection. I’m as excited about this film as you are because of the nuances the beautiful cinematic views and the amazing performances. 5 Stars from me. Do you break down other films? If so, please let me know. I’m very glad that you are back to being healthy. Everyone should be so fortunate but it’s just not to be. Say a grateful prayer and I’ll say one for you also Sweetie. By the way, I’m a 47 yr old married Mother and I’m always obsessed with amazing cinema from all corners of the planet. Do you breakdown foreign films or perhaps older films from an earlier time when drama reigned supreme? Thank you so much Sweetheart. Sorry I run on and on but you excited me about the mythos of this beautiful noir film.☺️ Take care.
@Novum_YT3 жыл бұрын
Wow Kerry, thanks so much for taking the time to send me such a thoughtful message. I couldn't agree more with your praise for the film, and Eggers himself. Thanks so much for your concerns and prayers also, it means a lot! I absolutely do breakdown other movies and there is lots more content coming very soon! I do enjoy foreign cinema, although I'll admit my experiences with it are limited. If you have any suggestions though, I'd love to check them out! I *love* older cinema, although again I would love to hear suggestions as I'm not as experienced as I'd like to be. So glad I could get you excited about mythos and noir! Thanks again for your kind words, take care and best wishes!
