I think Lincolns views on the races was pretty typical before the 1950s. They didn’t believe in slavery but they also didn’t believe in equality. It doesn’t make sense these days but that’s what they thought. Anyway Lincoln’s nationalistic view is the biggest cause of the war

Confederates attacked the union first, and it was well-documented that the reason each state individually and collectively seceded was over the issue of slavery. Anything else is lost cause myth propaganda
