The Linux boot process, whether using UEFI or BIOS is elegant, but also a bit confusing. This video breaks down what actually happens, and looks at how to configure GRUB2 in order to change how our system boots.
Plus we talk a bit about troubleshooting kernel panics, both boot related and intermittent. This is all part of the CompTIA Linux+ Objective 1.1.2
The Linux+ objectives are available here:

Taking a course right now for my degree. Every class is a essentially certification prep and you do a better job of explaining certain things than in class. Had my first taste of Linux with Ubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn but started giving it attention really since 8.10 intrepid ibex. And been toying with it regularly since then. But there's still a lot of small detail a user may not catch. You did a great job of touching on a lot of that. Keep up the good work. Gained a subscriber

After many research I think initramFS fully replaced initrd, because the initrd is for older linux (2.4 or older). initramfs was built directly to the kernel so they both run at the same time to mount the real root file system. Unlike initrd which needs to be first unzip to the memory(which creates more overhead because of the unzipping part) and then proceeds mounting the real root file system.

I am going through the Linux+ course right now using the CompTIA CertMaster and their other products and the CertMaster does go into dracut and initrd for a few questions. Even the book does not really go into it, but there are a few questions on the practice tests.

Loving this course so far. Something I want to ask about is when you were in /etc/default, you ran grub- and got a list of grub- commands. Im on ubuntu and when I run that same command as root in the same dir, it tells me command not found. What am I doing wrong?

Ahh, my apologies - I didn’t run grub-, I typed that much, and then pressed TAB. It’s autocomplete built into BASH. (See my KZbin short from yesterday for details!)

Thank you for your videos, they are super informative. I am new to Linux and I am confused by initrd and initramfs. I read somwehere else that a) system will use one or the other, not both at the same time and b) initrd is an outdated, deprecated thing used in old kernels and initramfs is the current way of booting linux. On the other hand you say (or at least that is how I understood it), that initrd is loaded first and then initramfs . Could you perhaps revisit this topic in a future video? Thank you!

Still cant understand what initrd does. In my imagination grub copies kernel into memory and passes control, so why do we need something before?
@shawnp0wers
@shawnp0wers 10 ай бұрын
It’s such a specialized bit of Linux that every time I need to teach it or mess with it in real life (almost never), I have to google myself some clarity. Basically it’s like a very stripped down kernel that allows you to use enough stuff to load the actual kernel… I k is that doesn’t help much. :/

I had a problem today. My Linux won't boot into my xsession correctly. I can get to launch into my XFCE desktop with starts after signing in on CLI . But the window manager/sign on screen doesn't appear. I want to get to that screen. Any suggestions? I am on mx Linux with XFCE. Also I already did update grub
@shawnp0wers

Depends on the distro - it would be a run level issue with Redhat (I think, unless that changed recently), otherwise it’s probably something with ldm/gdm/kdm, which is that initial login window daemon…

@@shawnp0wers Success !!! Figured out my default is lightDM. It was missing for some reason? I probably did a rm on something i shouldn't have. While I was working on finding it and trying to fix it, I saw the command 'timeshift' . I installed it. I knew I had snapshots of my system set up. Worked like a charm. Question: Could you do a video on timeshift and snapshots ? There really isn't much info out there in Utube , lbry, etc.
