In my opinion, a wonderful distro for beginners - people who are barely comfortable with Windows - is Linux Lite. It's an Ubuntu downstream but simplified with extra automation and management simplification. I started testing it out to see if it would work for a friend on my workbench and a Thinkpad and never installed anything over it. Think Xubuntu but much more polished.

Zorin OS was what got me interested in Linux again. I'd tried Ubuntu back in the early 2000's and Linux Mint in 2010 but they all lacked a easy to use interface. When I tried Zorin a few years back it really showed how Linux had come a long way and is very usable. A little restrictive for how I use Linux, but a great doorway to the world if Linux Mint doesn't do it for you coming from Windows. Personally I went with a Fedora KDE derivative. Regardless of Red Hats shenanigans, Fedora is a great base and very solid. It's the only distro I've stayed on for more than a month and upgraded past several releases. One of it's downsides is the constant updates because of it's almost bleeding edge - way more than you'll ever see on a Mac or Windows install. I think it all boils down to where you're coming from and choosing a desktop environment - the distro doesn't really matter that much. Elementary and Deepin DE's are great if Mac was your OS. If it was Windows 10 then I think KDE is a no brainer. Windows 7 and people generally seem to enjoy Linux Mint.
@ByteGuardian-111 күн бұрын
Great points, @peterschmidt9942! Zorin OS is fantastic for newcomers, and Fedora KDE is a solid choice, KDE's flexibility paired with Fedora's cutting-edge updates is hard to beat. I agree that the desktop environment often matters more than the distro. KDE is perfect for Windows 10 users, while Elementary and Deepin shine for Mac fans. How’s Fedora KDE been for your workflow?

I maintain the notebooks of some Linux beginners. What I need for them is a Linux distribution that they can upgrade themselves.
