Your lion king video is awesome! I like how you had a narrative of the Kimba reference subtly all the way through leading to when you actually talk about it. Also hilarious as always especially when you yell kimba at the end... Thanks for the great content!!

James is right to be super proud of that Lion King video. The video oozed with enthusiasm and admiration for the film and more so the passion of the filmmakers. I think the discussion in this episode highlighted why live action adaptations of animation can be so frustrating. With books and comics and plays and radio dramas and so on - we are seeing the work be transitioned into a different medium. There is going to be a blatant and expected change in terms of the overall look and how the viewer experiences the piece. Even in something like Watchmen that tries to be right off the page, it still is a totally different beast when it comes to watching vs reading. Even scenes that are the exact same carry some level of disconnect cause they slow down to make it look like a live action mock-up. However you know it has to be changed, and no matter how off the page, it will still be transitioning from still images to motion. However that transition is more troubling for animation, cause animation is already in motion, more than any other medium we are under total control of the animators and directors. Not just what we are seeing, but the entire world on screen is deliberately stylized the way they want it to look. You can certainly have films dripping with style, but not to the same degree. Even here with CGI animation....well being animation; there is still that feeling that the color pallet and deliberate work behind every brushstroke is missing. CGI animated films like this are something I really firmly support, but when it comes to adapting animation into photorealistic CGI, I just cannot see the motivation. All that you are left with is a shot for shot paint-job, now lacking the style and deliberate animation choices that made it great. They can carry the shots over sure, and it looks amazing. But in terms of actually sitting there and watching the film, I would rather watch the work that is more stylized and fluid, than something trying to portray it with the aesthetic of the world I know. Animation allows me to be at the mercy of the creators of the work, in a way that CGI animation can, just perhaps not when trying to reconstruct traditional animation

They should do a series where it's just them attempting to explain things they have limited knowledge of. Kind of like Drunk History. Like one episode James would do some light reading on a topic (eg WW2), then attempt to explain some part of it to Mason. The more obscure the event in question or the more relentless the questioning, the better. I'd listen to half an hour (or more) of that easy.

lion king seems like a cash grab. Original is still perfect and feels modern
@thebadbandito5 жыл бұрын
ohdannyboy it seems to me like they are just remaking all of them with the technology available now. Back then cartoons (illustrations) were the only way to get those grand ideas onto the big screen, that's why we got such great anime films like Akira or Perfect Blue. But now we can make films that look closer to real life, a look you are WAY more inclined to connect with because you've actually seen these images. It's all a cash grab, why else make films? At least we get to see it again, that's all I care about. I love it and I love the prospect of more.
@ohdannyboy68015 жыл бұрын
uhhhh first of all, theres a thing called uncanny valley. Second, live action or "more realistic" animation doesn't make you connect more--good voice acting, score, and story do that. In the same way better graphics don't necessarily make better games. The original cindarella is a better movie than something like Zootopia. Do you want a live action or mo-cap akira remake? I don't recall ghost in the shell being even remotely good. EDIT: and if you want to see it again, lion king is on blu ray. just watch it lol

@@WriteWhatISee It was certainly one of the most memorable parts of that movie, because it was so poorly done. And people realize how hard it is to make a good Joker, that's why we don't see live action Jokers often, and when we do, we expect them to be more than "not bad".
@thebadbandito5 жыл бұрын
I think the point of his story got cut out.. he is more than likely Jason Todd or whatever version of robin became a version of the Joker. I think the real joker (Joaquin Phoenix maybe??) Beat the shit out of Jason Todd which is why the robin suit had the jokers writing on it. Bruce even said something like "even the good guys don't stay good" in Batman v superman. Jared Letos joker never actually made it onto the screen, what we saw was the cut and edit from the studio.
