@marthapackard86492 жыл бұрын
It's cute but not the best I've ever heard. One thing that has always bothered me is that Lions do NOT live in the jungle so any version celebrating that part of the lyrics (written well after the original song) just sounds silly to me.

Commenting from Nairobi, Kenya.. Grew up in the early 2000s, we did not have a lot of radio options. KBC is kinda like our BBC and they used to play this song first thing at 5am. My mum used to taunt me, just turn the radio and play it. The version we had contained extra lyrics (the lion never sleeps). My mum passed on when I was 11, been looking for this song all my life and finally found it today!!!!

European nations learn English (ESL) all throughout their school years. Especially in larger cities. And I would say most of these kids have had English training. Also, like others mentioned when I was in choir, we had to sing in Latin, French, German, & Spanish even though we'd never been trained in the those languages. With the gift of singing comes the gift to memorize the words and sounds in the lyrics. I can't recall any one of us having any difficulty memorizing the lyrics in Latin or other languages. We all embraced it enthusiastically. It's part of the giftedness of singing.

Tami Collins I hope you find other versions they did a decent job - great on the sound effects but this def has been done better - they kinda sucked the soul out of it - possibly bcz they're a younger men's group, learning about technical vocal skills - rather than a seasoned group, who understands when to drop certain formal language in singing they'll continue to do better, if they keep practicing best I ever heard was Ladysmith Black Mambazo live - but their version is closer to the original, and doesn't have any words - you can feel everything in their voices - the English words kinda change the tone of its original meaning

What does being from South Africa have to do with ANYTHING ? This is a choir from Lithuania, and George David Weiss was from the US.

sonicsabbath Didn't the lion King took place in Kenya?, anyway, at least South Africa was the host of a World Soccer Cup Tournament.

@@oliverf.68 This song has been around a lot longer than The Lion King - it was not made for the movie, was just used in the movie.... Do not know what the Soccer has to do with the song either......

Doubt they know the true meaning of the song: The "lion" is Mbube, the persecuted people of Africa who were enslaved and had their natural resources stolen by colonizers. The lion represents the sleeping people who are just pretending to sleep, but will one day rise up and defeat the intruders. The word Mbube means lion. It was anglicized to wimboweh instead of the original pronunciation of im-boo-beh. The group that made up the original music in Africa never got the royalties they deserved for one of the greatest pop hits ever recorded.

Thanks for that interesting background information. Wikipedia gives Solomon Linda, a South African, complete credit for the song and words, but did he collaborate with a group on it? IMHO, one of the most uplifting songs of all time! And the context you give explains the feeling of exhilaration. At least later, Paul Simon fully credited singers such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo in performances and recordings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Linda Solomon Linda Born 1909 Pomeroy, Colony of Natal Died 8 September 1962 (aged 52-53) Johannesburg, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa Genres Isicathamiya Occupation(s) Musician, singer, composer Labels Gallo Record Company Solomon Popoli Linda (1909[1] - 8 September 1962), also known as Solomon Ntsele ("Linda" was his clan name),[2] was a South African musician, singer and composer best known as the composer of the song "Mbube", which later became the popular music success "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", and gave its name to the Mbube style of isicathamiya a cappella later popularized by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.[3]

@@christopheryoung1878 , Thanks, Chris: Linda deserves credit for the beat, the style, the background sounds and the all important yodel, but not for the English words and added melody about the lion. Those were composed much later. It is all explained well in the Netflix documentary, "The Lion's Share". Well worth watching. Disney is the real culprit here because they made the most money from Linda's creation and they hired lawyers to fight the Linda family's claim for royalties and rights. They only ended up with a small settlement and their own lawyers took most of that from a trust that was set up for the four sisters, one of whom died of AIDS because she could not afford treatment. A sad story that Disney would like to keep secret, so the sisters and attorneys were required to keep the facts quiet. The remaining three sisters are still alive but are living in relative poverty because little or no royalties are being paid now.

Bill REITTER Thanks, I’ll watch that Netflix documentary, www.netflix.com/title/80191050?s=i&trkid=13747225. Looks like this particular collaboration was a total success! Disney should be ashamed if they’re not sharing more of the profits, though. I’ll share the true story, in hopes that Disney can be pressured into paying more to the family. An incredible song!
