The folks calling the 4th down decision "stupid" don't get it. Alim was the 6th starter hurt in our front 7 from the initial 53 man roster. More than half of the backups are injured. Some of the 3rd string and rotational guys are hurt. Jack Campbell had the green dot in his second year and was running around pre snap and physically moving guys around into alignment because like 3-4 of these guys met this week. I'm not saying this as an injury excuse, depth is a genuine concern. 1 or 2 more injuries in that group, and were in 49ers don't have a QB territory, but with the entire front 7. Big Z has been banged up. Brian Branch was cramping and questionable. Dan Campbell was putting the defense out there as little as possible. Green Bay's secondary was decimated too. Whichever team had their defenses out last was going to lose. The gameplan was to rely on the offense and own time of possession, win or lose, so we don't stress the defense out more and risk another freak injury. And huge credit to that rag tag defense, these practice squad dudes from across the league and our own were playing like barbarians. I just wanted to throw this out there because the MCDC 4th down narrative has become a meme, and it is, but this was the game plan this week.

Two quick thoughts from a lions fan: 1) That play will win them another game this season. When even the commentators are saying “they are obviously kicking here and just trying to draw them offside” you have the advantage. Because he actually ran the play and it worked, every single team is going to have to assume he’s snapping that ball on 4th and 1. We saw the Browns and broncos both try to run up to the line and cause a penalty and the defense not even care because they KNEW they wouldn’t snap the ball. But forever moving forward the defense will be a little jumpy because they will never truly know what’s about to happen. 2) people will always bring up the NFC championship against the 49ers but forget that we had a BAD kicker last year. Statically we had a better shot of converting on 4th than our kicker making those field goals. I think if we had bates last year, he takes those points.

However, I'm really really starting to think they missed a trick when they didn't secure Maxx or Miles when Hutch went down. Their D is a worry, and I know they would have had to give up a pair of firsts, but they would have opened a 2-3 year window of absolute dominance, and instead are banking on this years crop of contenders being kinda crap. If the Bills keep improving or Chiefs pull themselves together this might end in tears when it didn't need to.

It’s actually not the draft picks that made me very glad we didn’t go after Maxx/Miles - it’s the salary cap. Our culture has been that if you work your ass off, you earn your pay. We’ve rewarded our draft picks that have done just that - Sewell, St Brown, McNeill. We’ve hit on a bunch of draft picks that we will need to extend (Hutch himself the most immediate one, but Jamo and Kerby (maybe Rodrigo as well) also from 2022; 2023 will have no-brainer extensions for LaPorta, Gibbs, Branch and Campbell). If we blew our salary cap on Maxx/Miles and didn’t have the money to extend most of those players, that would be a big middle finger to the locker room and lose a lot of trust in the coaching staff and front office. I think the long term consequences of that would be far worse than the benefit of bringing in a superstar DE.

It’s not that Campbell doesn’t trust his defence, it’s that he wants control of the Lions destiny. There is no defence in the NFL that can stop a good offence, which the Packers definitely have, from gaining thirty or forty yards in forty seconds under those circumstances. And to be clear, it’s not about the injuries, it’s about a good offence’s ability to make big plays against even a very good defence. That is what the NFL is like these days. If you have the opportunity to leave no time on the clock for your opponent to tie the game with a field goal, why wouldn’t you take it?

how is no one talking about how the Lions defense lost so many teeth when McNeil went out??? like, dude is a wrecker. and no one calls him dirty 😅

It's not so much that he didn't trust the defense, it's that anything can happen in 40 seconds when all they need is a field goal. We know the Hail Mary very well....long pass with pass interference, blown coverage that leads to a TD and wins it. Campbell was pissed at the refs managing the clock essentially for the Packers. He said hell no I'm not giving them the ball back. Our defense played their asses off and it would be heart breaking to see them give it up in the final seconds. When McNeill went out that run defense went with it. They could still get pressure, amazingly, but weren't getting home. Imagine having to play 4 dudes who weren't even on the team a week ago in a major role in a huge game like this...AG needs coach of the year

DC isn't making any decisions on 4th down. He made that decision when he was hired, and it's not changing. Every Lions player knew before the game they were going for it. They knew in minicamp. They knew on first down, second down and third down. Punter doesn't get up, defense doesn't move an inch. They all know they're going for it. And that has the benefit of simplifying everyone's situation. That's why he keeps doing it, even when it isn't beneficial or is highly risky, like in his own half. Doesn't matter; we're going for it anyway!

Lions rushing yards: 94 Packers rushing yards: 64 Lions shut down the Packers run game. Jacobs didn’t even get 70 yards rushing+receiving…. Meanwhile… Gibbs ALONE got over 70 and Monty got 84 Can’t argue the facts 🤷🏻♂️

Trivia question: There have been three 100% completion halves in the NFL this year. Can you name the three QBs who have done it? I'll tell you. 1. Jared Goff 2. Jared Goff 3. Jared Goff

guys truly a clown with the emotional maturity of a child. Believe it or not he scored a whopping 9 points on the Wonderlic test lol. The average at his position is above 20... Im not sure how you can function as a human being when you're that stupid. What's even crazier is that his teammate, Devonte Wyatt, scored an impressive 8! so if you combine both of those you ALMOST get the average intellect of an NFL player. That's hilarious 🤣

There's a lot factoring into Packers' fan bitterness but this has to be part of it. They're pissed that it worked so often, and they felt robbed of a chance to see Love get the Packers back into FG to tie it. Maximum deflation on the conversion and especially on the FG. They know that as much as they love watching the Packers play, none of the remaining games are really high stakes. They'll surely still make the playoffs but they're basically just jostling for 5th/6th for the next month. There is the Seahawks game and two division games I'm sure they'll still be amped about, but in terms of the outcomes mattering for the Packers the season is done, and it's just hoping and praying none of their guys get hurt for the postseason.
