I am usually against race-swapping, especially in films with a historical genre that deals with certain ethnic identities like Greek, German, or Chinese, or something that belongs to a certain period, but this is The Little Mermaid. Ariel is supposed to look different from those who live on land, and also Ariel lives under the sea, she can look anything, she can be green, blue, whatever kind of color. Her being black shouldn't be a big deal. I know the complaints come from the look we were used to watching when growing up, but people shouldn't judge her just because she's black. She's as Ariel as Jodi Benson did, her voice sealed the deal for her, I couldn't see any other person doing Ariel at this point. Looks wise, Sadie Sink is good but can she sing? Ariel's most unique asset is her VOICE, not her looks. That's the truth.

Race swapping iconic characters is NOT OKAY. Imagine they turned Elsa from Frozen Asian or black. Or Tinkerbell black. Or princess Aurora black. Or Cinderella black or Asian. It is all possible, race does not matter with those princesses. But you sure as hell change their iconic looks. Remember, princess Ariel was created by a Danish author. He wants her to be white. She had beautiful elegant red hair, green tail. Plus Halle doesn’t look pretty for a princess. The only good thing about her is her voice, but even her voice doesn’t sound good in ‘part of your world’ (Disney released the full version). Her voice sounds too harsh for a Disney princess

That red hair we know was a creative liberty done by Disney based on Alyssa Milano's look, so they can do whatever the heck they want with the "Ariel" character. Yes, the writer was a Danish man, but technically speaking the Little Mermaid is not supposed to be Danish because she does not live on a land that's considered a territory of Denmark. She lives under the sea, and just because she lives under sea does not necessarily mean she has to be white. Andersen did not even specify which area of the world Ariel's kingdom is. It's actually more meaningful to depict her as having a different skin tone because she's meant to be different to the people in Prince Eric's kingdom which have European features. Ariel is not the same as Elsa and Anna who are specified as Nordic and Northuldran (Sami), nor Moana who was Polynesian, nor Merida who was Scottish, nor Belle who was French, nor Mulan who's Han Chinese, nor Tiana who's African American. Ariel was a sea-creature who's supposed to look different to the people on land, and I believe having dark skin in a white-majority Kingdom is a good visual representation of what it is to be "different".

If I could tell Ms. Bailey _one_ thing, it would be the memory I have of what's probably the biggest uproar over casting before she was overwhelmed with the shameful backlash around hers. The public was vicious beyond words months before we'd have any idea what they'd even look like as the iconic character. Virtually nobody could understand why _they_ were chosen and I didn't envy the pressure they were under. Quite tragically, the actor didn't live long enough to see the public's stunned reaction to their actual performance. They even won an Oscar, accepted by their grieving family. The actor's work in the role almost nobody had confidence in them playing is now the _definition_ of iconic and those that come after will feel his performance is how high the bar is set for _them._ And it will indeed be almost unheard of to top it. We can only hope he's aware of just how wrong everybody realized they were to judge him unfairly. We can only hope others, like you, will take comfort in the fact that one of the greatest performances in film came from such pressure. That actor was Heath Ledger. The character: The Joker. The film: The Dark Knight. Break a fin, kid! You're going to have the world in your hands.

I've now seen the movie twice since it finally came out in Japan, and I just have to say it: Halle Bailey IS Ariel. It's not just her siren-like voice - I mean, in the film, she is genuinely Ariel. Her curiosity, her sweetness and innocence. She's adorable, too. You feel so heartbroken for her during certain scenes and just want to root for her the whole time. "The Little Mermaid" was never my favorite of the animations, but 100%, it has become my favorite of the live action remakes. This movie is just a masterpiece.

When I found out Halle would be playing Ariel I just remember being like oh yeah that makes sense. She literally IS a Disney princess vibe. She’s sweet and gentle and graceful. She’s the only person in the entertainment industry I see playing this role.
