2:57 The original's film portrayal of "mute" Ariel was one of the many wonderful things about that film. Her animators so ably capturing her emotions/thoughts strictly through how they portrayed her facial features and especially her huge blue eyes. Even though she never says a word, everyone could understand how she was feeling and thinking. It's a big reason why Ariel became so popular. She is one of the most emotionally expressive of all of Disney's princesses. (I HATE that they remade it. Pure naked greed combined with the arrogant and obnoxious belief that it had to be "fixed" for modern audiences just sickens me. Thankfully, I never have to see it and never will.)

Uh, if you're concerned about the film not following the source material, I've got bad news for you: the original Disney animated film is nothing like the book. Granted, perhaps you do care about the unfaithfulness of the original film too, but I'm afraid focusing on the race of the actress in this version does make you seem a little bit, well... racist. And I don't use that term lightly.

The kids I watched it with at AMC hated it. Right after Ariel's opening scene when they went to Eric and stayed on Eric, they hated it. I have never heard more crying, screaming, nervous shuffling, and (smelled) more pottying at a Disney movie. One little girl even got up in front of the screen and started running around and her mother had to catch her. The little girl in front of me couldn't pay attention and her father had to take her out four times and bring her back I'm sure after reminding her she wanted to see Ariel, but there was very little Ariel. There was more Eric than needed, way more, but they needed to simp him up. He just needed to be eye candy.

I keep hearing about parents having to bribe their kids to stay still and stick it out after maybe an hour, which I find really understandable for what I have heard about the movie, but still really shocking. O.K. get this: So Ariel is black here, her sister is a latina, her other sister is a blonde caucasian and there´s another black mermaid sister. Their father Triton is a Spaniard. So... did Triton have some sort of mermaid "harem" or something? Well, according to the novelization: no, he only had ONE wife, all mermaid sisters had the SAME mother! I repeat for the people with reading comprehension issues in the comments: *All these mermaid sisters, who are black, Caucasian, Latina had the SAME MOTHER & FATHER.* Triton and his ONE wife, had 4 mermaid daughters who are: -black -Latina -caucasian blonde -another black one. EDIT: There's also an Asian mermaid sister, which had the SAME MOTHER AS ARIEL! I´m sorry, WHAT?! How does this even work?! I know, I know... Back in those days, illegitimate children were not recognized, so those daughters had to come from marriages. A king had to marry for one reason... to produce a male heir to the throne. Girls were useless. If a queen gave birth to a girl, she could be divorced or beheaded, so that the king could marry again and try again for a son. It is impossible that the king is unmarried...he would remarry immediately to create a son. In America, interracial marriages were not legal until 1967. And, even today, it is illegal for a man to marry a fish.

Surely, copyright expired over 100 years ago? Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid in 1837. He died in 1875. His works are now all Public Domain. In a similar vein, no studio can claim exclusive rights to any of Shakespeare’s works.
@Jsa460
@Jsa460 Жыл бұрын
@@sirrathersplendid4825 I don't understand this statement either. Most works are copyrighted for I think its 70 years after the creator's death. (Although Disney has been trying hard to stop anything entering the public domain ever again which is ironic considering how much of their company is built on using other's work). You don't have to do anything with it, just by releasing it gives you rights over it. Even though Hans' work is in the public domain, Disney's version of it is under copyright. So people can use the original as a base for their own story, but if they use Ariel's character Disney will sue them. On the other hand you have to use trademarks or you will lose them, but this is not a trademark. Disney to my knowledge owns full rights over the original animation so it isn't a contract either that they have to use it or it returns to the creator. The remakes are pure money grabbing only.

I avoided those shows. The directors of the 1930s through the 1950s knew how to cut film. They knew the beats and seldom got it wrong. Another great review by Chato. Disney won't stop making bad live-action remakes! They have the money to create 2D & CG hybrid original animated films. This studio lacks the creativity to make new movies that equal their 2D Renaissance era(89-99).🙄

They might start to think about it now! After this one and what the disaster that will likely be Snow White (without the dwarfs), they simply cannot afford to keep losing the millions of dollars they spend making the movies… the first one might have worked, and the second maybe, but by the time you get to five or six the magic and fun and overall interest is just dead.

One thing the bothers me about the endings, they go for a boat ride. Shouldn't Ariel and Eric's journey be inland? Maybe see some mountains, deserts, forest, or grassland. Here is a girl who has wanted to be "up there, where the people are." You know what Ariel has already see, THE OCEAN! What is Arial going to see sailing the ocean, she hasn't seen already????

Thanks for your review Chato! I appreciate your honesty. I feel your review will be most honest out of the group of folks you hangout with (i.e. midnights edge, etc). Their dislike for Disney proper always poisons any commentary they have - I don’t believe they’re even able to have an honest, unbiased opinion on Disney projects despite any claims they make on the contrary. (ScriptDoctor, actually I feel would be honest and unbiased come to think of it, but I digress.) Anyway, again, thank you for your review and the integrity you put into all your content. Have a good day.

@englishatheart
@englishatheart Жыл бұрын
Why not? You don't need to see her breasts, for goodness sake. If you're that concerned with "realism," why would she have breasts to begin with? I know they're part human, but they live underwater. I don't know of any mammal that lives solely underwater. Therefore they likely don't breastfeed. And, if you want to conclude that they're magic in a way and still human enough to need breasts, maybe their breasts are a weak spot. Maybe they naturally developed natural armor over them. Or maybe they have modesty and don't want their tatas out for everyone to see.

I never realized that the remakes were about copyright and ownership. So does a remake reset the clock on the original property? That doesn’t seem quite kosher. Does anyone involved with the original production get a cut of the new property? I don’t know if you can make a video explaining that aspect of the business, and make it funny. Challenge!

I get that kids will watch anything. Hell, one of my sons' favorite shows was "Mighty Machines" on a certain other N named streaming service. Literally stock footage of construction vehicles etc and someone doing voiceover dialog "skits." (Seriously, look it up... my wife and I still laugh about it) But, if I had a daughter of the age to watch this show: 1. I know a kid won't last 2 Hours + in a theatre regardless of what's on the screen. 2. It's too damn expensive to take kids to the movies these days... so it's not the "time filler" it used to be. The lack of spectacular reviews would keep me from wasting the money. We'd go to the park/zoo or have a movie night at home. (see below) 3. I'd just show her the original. It is bright, exciting, short enough, and it is much more magical. It was the beginning of the resurgence of Disney Animation for a reason.

I appreciate your review. You gave the movie a chance and gave your honest opinion about what worked and what didn't. I know I'm just describing what a movie review is supposed to be, but it is so rare now that I took notice. Regarding the race-swap: most people wouldn't care about this in isolation. The problem is the Hollywood pattern of repeatedly replacing gingers with blacks, and then using the black actor as a shield against criticism. They've made things difficult for black actors. Now, even if a black actor is chosen because they were far and away the best choice for a role that had been previously always been played by a different race, people will be skeptical and assume its the criticism-shield thing and not give it a chance. Even with their race-swaps Hollywood is risk averse. It's almost ALWAYS ginger to black. Ariel, Annie, Superman's pal Jimmy Olson, Barbara Gordon (Batgirl)…the list goes on and on. If they're going to keep doing this, can we at least have DIFFERENT race-swaps? Why not swap a blonde for a Navajo Indian, or have a black character played by an Eskimo or Inuit*? * Some groups these terms describe consider "Eskimo" to be a pejorative and prefer Inuit, while groups actually prefer the term Eskimo, so I've included both here. The ones that prefer "Inuit" do so because it comes from their own language (meaning "people"), whereas "Eskimo" is a term not from their language that was given to them by outsiders, meaning "eaters of raw meat". The ones that prefer "Eskimo" speak a different language that doesn't include the word "Inuit".
