This wouldn't be too surprising if this was canon especially considering Triton never communicated with Ariel on why he originally didn't like or trust humans if I had to guess I think it was because humans would kill and eat fish.

Oh I thought deeper with Ariel’s mother being killed by humans and honestly that’s something hard to talk about. It would something I’ll be bitter about and not being able to just casually talk about. It’s how I saw things being. I did see “Ariel’s Beginning” (fav sequel personally) I think they had a scene about that.
