it's a dystopia alright, but what director did is he just exaggerated the current state our society is in, methinks loners considered losers, you declare yourself a loner - you immediately get an advice about getting a date, while other loners start telling you that no, it's not worth it, relationships are destructible and full of misery and suffering, be on your own and enjoy it movie tells us to strike a balance, and this statement alone is the first reason it became one of my favorites for this video, i greatly enjoyed that its author got the message right and delivered it in the best way possible it's a sub, keep up the good work

Utopia is not harder to reach than dystopia, and we aren’t closer to dystopia than to utopia, only our own egocentricism and shortsightedness could make us think the opposite in my opinion. Just look at any period in history. Life is a combination of happiness and distress, of pain, misery, ignorance, hatred, benevolence, science, wealth and pleasure. Never in history has the balance of life tipped so much in favor of the latter, even in the worst hell on earth you could imagine. Take the worst country you could think of today, it has better prospect than 99% of past countries, and life is probably better there than it used to be for much of its history. The only exception to that, when humanity lives in relative abundance, without wars, and the burden of disease, was when our societies were so small that our lives were happy but empty, a time of bliss but ignorance, and fruitlessness. I mean, seriously, we live pretty darn near heaven right now, and got a long way away from hell. We become so much more isolated ? Are you kidding me ? Though it’s true, I won’t argue that we are more connected now than ever. Rather, I’ll point out that our wealth and knowledge allows on a massive scale what was impossible for much of our past on earth : true communion with he stranger. You think you are isolated ? Think about the time when you being integrated relies so heavily on your absolute obedience to social norms. We didn’t grow apart, we finally let go of our empire on others, these are two different things.

I paused it when you introduced what the Lobster was all about, couldn't believe I hadn't heard of it before, immediately watched on it on Netflix, and watched the rest of you video right after. What a weird, strange, amazing, and absurd film. Great breakdown too! The ending left it so open-ended, it was great. Such a great performance by all the actors and it has such hilarious moments with the bland dialogue. This is one of my favorite dystopian black comedies now. Ty for introducing me to it!

The end isnt actually open, quite the contrary, but its quite understendable the confusion. When the credits are about to end, sea sounds like waves crashing start to being heard. This heaviely implies that the protagonist choose, using the options in this video, the third alternative: to fuck leave everything behind and actually become the (titular) lobster.

I always find the most interesting Dystopian movies have characters who don't belong in the established world, whether it be something like being a survivor in a destroyed world or just not having a connection to the people around them. By the time we got to the toaster scene, we looked at each other, I said, "oh, this is a horror film" and we turned it off. I think it is also about extremism. We have a subject without an objectively right answer but most people can agree that living as a couple is probably better. But this disagreement becomes bigger and bigger and soon we have two sides that only allow one answer and cuts out the grey areas. Now the people in the middle are often forced to take one side, even though they dont want to.

You jumped the fact that the narration is only made for three characters. Loner Leader, Near Sighted and David. This narration I think is actually a trait they share, an endless inner narration of everything they think and that happens. And why loner leader was also in love with David.

Utopias are NEVER a good thing. They can only be achieved by sacrificing the most basic human values. Even in real life today, we have very problematic societies on some levels that are not utopias, but seemingly are well-organized, developed and wealthy societies. Take Japan, for instance. In material terms, their quality of life seems outstanding. And many (especially anti-Americans/anti-Capitalist idiots) would argue their collectivist world view is preferable to the individualistic one from our side of the world. However, bullying both in schools and businesses is caused precisely thanks to such extreme collectivist standing. If you don't comply to what the majority considers normal, you will be bullied in schools, not by a few rotten apples, but by the whole class and even the teachers, sometimes. Most Japanese women don't engage in romantic relationships and, when they do, don't have children, which is causing a huge problem in Japanese society, which is aging fast with no new generation to replace the old ones. The government is well aware of that problem, but despite all their efforts, companies keep insisting in not hiring women of child-bearing age because they don't want to have to pay maternity leaves, and employees go along with that, often bullying young women into quitting their jobs (or comitting suicide) because they got married or pregnant. The herd mentality implied in any utopia is extremely dangerous and damaging, and one of the major reasons for that is that utopias aren't possible in real life, as the fate of all socialist/communist nations has amply demonstrated during the 20th century.

Alexandre Martins not counting the fact that most western countries operate under a mixture of socialism and capitalism and fare better than the US in terms of human development or happiness, you do realize that life in Japan now is still far better than it used to be ? I mean, now you are bullied, before you were killed. I think that not only taking Japan is dishonest when arguing that our modern world is far from an utopia and utopias necessitate sacrificing basic human values, it’s also an epic fail. Japanese live better now than they did today, in fact everyone is. In large part thanks to capitalism, of course, and in large part due to elements of socialism, like at the very least free universal school. And most would agree : free universal healthcare, at least some measure of it. Also, going on a rant about socialism when talking about japan and their collectivistic mentality... epic fail. Japan and China are the proof that collectivist mentality, when handled correctly, are favored by a capitalistic economy, but Japan is not socialist, despite its very strong reliance on values such as families and the importance of the group over the individual. By the way, it’s ironic to hear that coming from a citizen of the US. It’s not like the most traditional/conservative (ie : anti-socialist) part of your population were religious people doing just that (placing family and religion at the same level or over the wellbeing of the individual), with super strong social pressures in order to keep everyone in church for most of your history, sometime despite your own constitution ?
