This video came about by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative asking basically whether I wanted to interview some of the leading experts in their field, to which the answer was obviously yes, so big thanks to them. I too remember that disaster, a co-worker booked her vacation in a resort in Haiti days before the earthquake. Everyone told her not to go, but she kept her reservations and (despite the infrastructure collapse) managed to make it there. When she came back she was furious that there was no reliable electricity and therefor no ice cubes for her drinks, or air conditioning. She complained that most of the sight seeing ventures were closed and there were no other guests and minimal staff (because everyone; foreign guests included, ditched their vacation and resort jobs to help). Great respect for all the people, countries, relief organizations, and US Navy that lend their hands to help. Zero respect for my co-worker.

They inflate into a sterile operating room, fully equipped with air seals in case of a pandemic like ebola, as well as climate control and electrical outlets hooked up to generators. They can be air dropped in, inflated and completely set up within 90 minutes. Multiple units can be attached to one another to make a full hospital. That includes triage, examining rooms, pre/post op, X-ray, offices, etc. You name it, and they can be linked up and operational in the time it takes to watch a movie.

I have a friend in the army reserves, and one of the things he was always concerned about was the ability for local hospitals and clinics to be used as casualty collection points. Not a single hospital in my country (Philippines) is capable for a mass casualty event, either the hospital itself is incapable, or the infrastructure surrounding it is not effective enough for so many vehicles coming in and out. One of his examples was, if ever there was a school or equally large organisation in a compound that gets bombed or shot up, the fastest response that will arrive will only be security on site, police units on motorbikes, and helicopters if there is space to land. Even more worse was if the disaster was natural, where elements and factors were not under control of the responders. Thousands would die simply because help wasn’t able to arrive on time or conduct themselves efficiently.

Those people sat out there in the blazing heat, just so they could control the massive influx of planes using tiny radios and their expertise. It was more than just a job to them, it was a necessary deed for the sake of the human race. When you so often hear about all the bad in the world, you start to lose sight of the good. Logistics is the key to any disaster response. I work for the largest disaster and property restoration company in the world. At least for our operations in the USA and Canada, we have a fleet of dedicated vehicles and equipment for national disasters. Trucks filled to the brim with equipment and supplies, mobile command centers to direct operations, and personnel network that pulls professionals from all over the region to increase the man power in the affected area. Once we get to an area and the orders are given, the first step is containing the structure. Waterproof tarps, board ups, sandbags, sump pumps. What ever it takes to prevent further damage. Next is pulling equipment from our mobile warehouse trucks and setting it up. If there's enough power. This equipment is there to dry water damage and purify the air. By this point insurance adjusters are on site and we work them to determine the scope of the demolition and repairs. Round the clock, the command center is directing workers on where to go, what to remove, what to replace, and what can be restored. Following a major hurricane, we can restore entire regions in just 2 or 3 months. All thru careful planning and logistics.

Some local group donated a whole truck load of Fiji water that be boxed up for an air drop. The first airdrops didn't go quite so well a the locals rushed the drop zone when they saw the parachutes. We used our High velocity chutes that fall at 40-50 meters per second. A few people got killed in their rush to get to the food/water.

Wow. Very good video! That's quite the jump in production value. Good on ya. Nice to see this channel improving! I like the format - it's definitely better than just stringing together stock footage after stock footage!

I was gonna make a plane joke but this video was well done, kudos to you to talk about Disaster Response since it's rarely given attention in times of no major disasters happening.

I know this is a joke but there a reason why it doesn't work. The why the pressure wave travels is deferent then a normal wave

When Haiyan hit the Philippines, the Vice President at that time repackaged relief goods from abroad so that they looked like it was from him. Others also replaced some items (like Spam) and replaced them with local ones because they were expensive goods and a waste to just give out to poor people.

Also it always interesting to see countries who don't have the capacity to respond to the natural disaster make the relief efforts wait to do customs check, while people are dying for those supplies! It's always those 3rd world countries which insist that the relief effort must flow through their own people so the corrupt govt can pick and choose the good stuff!

6:21 Woo! U-S-A! U-S-A! Also, I think this is the only time in recent memory where the US Military rolling up to a third world country and calling the shots actually ended in a good way.
