Hi Matt, I just ran across your channel and am in awe of the beautiful slabs I have seen. I am also in awe of your saw. I have not looked at any of the build for the saw but fully intend to. I have been trying to save logs since 2005 but I don't have a mill and all the mills around here are not big enough to make good slabs. And all the owners are afraid of nails and such. I have a big oak tree that fell in a wind storm a few weeks ago and am wondering if you would be interested in having it. It is at least 40 inches at 9' above the base. The first crotch area is about 18' and a second crotch area is about 9' above the first crotch. I have a couple of pictures if your interested. I really don't want to see it rot down. Thanks, Dave

I have a quick question for you Matt or other viewers... I will have an opportunity to get a 30-36" diameter thornless Honey Locus tree perhps this Fall or next. Is the wood good for furniture or anything? I don't want to go through the cost and time if it ends up to be mediocre. Perhaps it is just better for firewood?

Time to add a pivot for a couple of 72" chain saws to clear the sides of the log on the mill? Well, perhaps a set of laser guides for whomever is going to chainsaw sides off to be able to know where the clearance is.

I know you have more things to do than you have time to do them but I think moving The Saw Mill to the barn should be a priority! I cant stress how much easier it would be to use if you could reach both sides with your equipment. You need a shed with some kind of high roof over top to block the sun and protect the mill!

Matthew, are you certain that this log is a black walnut? It looked more like a Persian walnut to me. UPDATE! I looked in the wood database and found a close match to this wood. It looks a lot like the Bastogne walnut which is a hybrid. Its Latin name is Juglans paradox.

It would probably be easier on blade if each Slab was removed instead of letting them stack. A laser level might help with getting the width of each side right before sawing.
