Actually, before they were being a thing in Long Dark, playing Stalker difficulty, I really suffered early game without them. The lacking of decent maximum condition permanently reduced often caused my certain death in a risky situation, where I needed time to recover from and my character couldn't survive it. Now as they are everyday game content, somehow I see them never been put into good use, because eversince they exist, on the same update they kinda increased the headwears and gloves spawn chance significantly, so I say that they kinda aged like milk and ended up being obsolete real quick.

That's also about the only reason I'll ever use the driving gloves or baseball cap, just to prevent frostbite risk from being a factor. The second I find anything else, it's automatically better and I make the switch.

The Fishermans sweater is so much lighter than the cowichan, that's a late game item right there though I'm totally biased since I have one irl and I love it. fun fact: each village has a different fisherman sweater pattern so that they can send washed up bodies home if they cant identify it.

Mukluks are definitely as good or better than insulated boots. They are pretty much lighter deerskin boots as well, but give very little sprint penalty. Also, I want to say, in one run I found five insulated boots and a SINGLE Mukluks. So, maybe Mukluks are the best found boots item.

The bearskin coat is heavy, but it and the wolfskin coat both have the bonus of the chance to trigger wolf fear, even in timberwolves. There should be 2 different lists. For Interloper and lower. Because if you play on stalker for example, the weather is not so harsh as it is on Interloper so you don't really need to wear extremely warm items such as a bear coat. On stalker it is much better to use moose coat because of its protection it is very useful because there are much more wolves on stalker than on Interloper
@JonathanRossRogers
@JonathanRossRogers Жыл бұрын
There certainly should be two lists. I don't often use the Moose-Hide Cloak in Stalker because it's so heavy and I like to carry firearms. The high protection would be more useful in Interloper, but cold is generally the bigger enemy. I might experiment with the Ballistic Vest in Interloper since it can be swapped with warming accessories.

Yeah but the better alternative is the bearskin coat as even though it provides 5% less protection and 10% less water protection. The warmth and wind protection outways a lighter, less weather effective coat that is mostly a trophy item. And unless you want to use it to make yourself an unkillable god (All other craftable gear with the ballistic vest provides somehing like ~120% protection overall which in my testing makes you unkillable until something is destroyed... When I first saw the ski boots in game my first thought was "oh these are warm but useless". If you've ever worn ski boots you know they aren't built for walking, they're built so you don't break or twist your ankle. It's like wearing an insulated cast. I immediately put them back where they came from and never looked back. Kudos to the dev team for making all these clothing items' stats realistic enough that I can intuitively know how good they are based on real life experience.

This could just be down to playstyle differences but I personally rank the fisherman's sweater, combat pants, wool mittens and mukluks as top tier late game items. I think it's because there are two things I take into much higher consideration: 1) Warmth/weight ratio is really important to me. Cowichan has great stats but it's heavy for an inner layer. 1kg is a lot when your total carry capacity is 30kg. Windproof and protection also mean nothing on an inner layer. Fisherman's sweater is only 0.5 C less warm, but half the weight. Wool shirt is very under-rated here I think. I don't like Deerskin pants at all because of their weight, I'd only craft them if I couldn't find combat or snow pants, and only ever wear them as an outer layer (because their main value is in their waterproof, windproof and protection bonus) 2) Ease of maintenance. Deerskin pants require 1 hide, 1 gut and 100 min of repair time just to restore 30% condition. Combat pants require 1 cloth and 30 minutes, and also weigh far less at 0.75kg compared to 2kg. Cloth is abundant and infinitely renewable with beachcombing so I don't worry about running out of cloth.
@pisslowdariuspeaker3082
@pisslowdariuspeaker3082 Жыл бұрын
Mukluks and Combat Pants not being at the top hurts my soul. Combat pants have the same warmth stats as Deerskin, but weighs less. Deerskin has extra protection and waterproofing but that only matters on the outer layer. So you are supposed to wear one outer Deerskin Pants and inner Combat Pants. Or just two pairs of combat pants. Mukluks are just lighter Deerskin boots. They have the same warmth. The loss in protection and waterproofing is made up in weight and mobility. Also it’s ridiculously easy to repair Mukluks. Side note: I think Fleece gloves are better than ski gloves. 0.5 C for… -1 mobility and +.45KG. I’d rather have no mobility/weight penalty. Driving Gloves are the same as Fleece and I think that putting them so low isn’t really deserved. They keep your hands from frostbite until you can craft better gloves or you find one of the rare gloves. Conversely Wool Mittens are absolutely late game tier, .1 KG for +1C and no movement penalty. While Rabbit gloves are warmer, they take -5% mobility and weigh a whole 1kg.

The weight and mobility penalty is just too high for me, I might keep some in my main base if I want to go full armoured battle tank build and get into a fight with a bear. But the thing about protection is that it *only* reduces the initial condition damage you take during a wildlife encounter. It doesn't protect you from status afflictions like bleeding etc.

I personally prefer the mukluks over insulated boots. They're only 0.5°C less warm, and slightly less waterproof, but the much lower mobility penalty is worth it imho. I also seem to have the devil's own luck when it comes to finding them. Some people talk about never finding them even once in hundreds of hours of playing the game. I tend to find a pair every other playthrough, usually pretty early on. On both my previous and current playthroughs (both Stalker), I've found a pair in one of the first few buildings I looted. One in the Carter Dam safe, and the other in the Paradise Meadow's Farm in Milton.

mukluks are deerskin boots, but lighter. So putting deerskin boots above mukluks makes no sense. anyway, i think the question is more complex and the rating depends according to difficulty. Voyager and Pilgrim: weight is the most important aspect since cold isn't that much of a problem. i would use: Trail Boots, 2 climb socks, 2 longjohns, 2 Army Pants, 2 fisherman sweater, 2 Expedition Perka, balaclava, Wool Touque, wool mittens. Stalker: temperature is problematic, but u also need to focus on protection. I would focus on having the most warmth without sacrificing weight too much... and also look for protection: i would use: Mukluks, 2 climbing socks, 2 longjohns, army pants + snow pants, 2 fisherman sweaters, 1 expedition perka, 1 wolfskin coat, balaclava, rabbitskin hat, gauntlets. This would give u a lot of warmth, you got good protection vs wolves and you compromise on weight. why wolfskin coat? because of weight and protection, and u dont need a bearskin coat if you also wear a expedition perka. I wouldnt use 2 expedition perkas because even though a wolfskin coat is less warm and more heavy, you need it for protection. Interloper: here things are simple. Everyone maximizes warmth. double bearskin coat etc. Personally i go a little bit lighter so i can actually run, climb ropes, and have some room for loot. I use: deerskin boots, 2 wool socks, 2 thermal pants, 2 army pants, 2 thin sweaters, 1 wolfskin coat, 1 bearskin coat, 1 rabbitskin hat, 1 wool touque, working gloves.

Your lowest tier should have been called 'rather not' or something. then it would make more sense when you put things that you admit you wear in the early game in that category when there is an early game category where they should have been placed.

I consider this a major crime! Who would ever think Mukluks are worse than Insulated Boots. Mukluks give just give 0.5 C less, and 40% instead of 50% waterproof, but they have 1% more protection, steal only 3% mobility instead of 12% and you can repair them for 50% for 1 cloth&leather, whilst insulated boots takes 1 cloth&leather for only 30% and more over, the Mukluks are a lot more durable when it comes to decay rates. Also Work Pants are pretty trash, you have 1.5 C+1.0C for 1.5 kg weight, so Cargo Pants would be better cause half the weight. I won't judge the Mility Coat tho, because Never Use was just based on never having it, but it definitely would belong to Mid-Game, Good, because it's just the straight upgrade to the old-fashioned parka. It got the same warmth and weight, but more waterproof, more protection and less mobility penalty. Combat Boots are somewhere between First Days and Early-Game, they are a little bit to heavy, but have good protection. I consider Fisher Sweater to be better than the Cowichan Sweater, just because the Cowichan gives 0.5 more warth (2.5 instead of 2.0 C] it has *double it's weight*. But overall somewhat solid Tier List of clothing. :D

Let's be honest, if your killing wolves and bears it means you basically already beat the game, cause to do so safely, you need good clothing, a reliable food source, and some weapons. You kill wolves first cause they spawn more often than bears, and even if your gear is better than the wolf fur coat, you put oh anyways, put on your Viking war paint and start going bear hunting as the final boss. I personally just consider getting the bear cloak as the "congratulations you beat the game" trophy, cause once again if you are in a stable enough position to kill bears and wolves, it most likely means you did everything to do in that run. Get your bear cloak, shout whoo hoo, explore abit, then just start a new run.

Thanks for posting. Now I wanna spin up a fresh 'loper run. I tend to favor mobility when I can, and obviously on interloper it's more about what you can get, as you said some things don't spawn often. I love to start in Ash canyon when I can or go there quickly in Interloper, the backpack, crampons, and a few possible rare spawns make it worth it.

To be fair, on interloper, there is no “never use”. Whatever you get early on is must use. But some of the worst items don’t spawn anyway.

The Expedition Parka is actually on par with the bearskin coat. The only difference between the 2 coats are that the bearskin coat has more warmth and protection value, whereas the Expedition Parka has more wind protection and waterproofing. I usually go with a parka on the outer layer for the wind and wet protection, and the bearskin on the inner layer for the warmth and chance to scare off wolves and timberwolves. Occasionally, when wearing this or the wolfskin coat, I'll have a pack of timberwolves break moral instantly due to the fear effect of those coats. Basically what happens in this case is instead of howling to signal a pack attack, the one that spots you just squeaks and runs away, rather then initiating the pack attack.

Its a real shame you can't craft a full set of 2 layer deer skin clothing in the style of a steel toe boot in that there is steel plat in it as well as cat tail fluff.

Sry for the late response. I agree with the ballistic vest. However, the crampons are now pretty much useless. Since you'll probably always use the tool belt and the moose hide satchel. Rn it would probably be A-B tier

Fun video and really interesting. I disagree on a few things but I think it just shows how things change depending on what difficulty level, what map, and play style. Not to mention the order you find things, some interesting inner\outer combos, repair rates and the availability of materials & kits to repair things. Insulated Boots is probably the main thing I would never use in late game. They are awesome if you get them early and really need the warmth but I find them far to slow for the later game. At that point, any warmth bonus is usually negated by how much longer you are exposed to the cold because they are so slow. I also found a use for combat boots in the story mode mid game. When you keep being sent on missions into angry animal country, the extra protection is useful.😀 But, like you, I'd never normally use them.

Some bad items, like eg. the skiboots, also have some good purposes. You're right it's bad on the mobility side, and you're also right they are warm. But these boots has a high protection number. So if you are about to kill a moose or Bear, that could also be a tactic to be well protected, and ofcause have shorter distance to your escape spot. Combat boots, Mullock, or insulated boots also has high protection. Other high protection clothes are the long leather gloves... think it's furnice gloves with extra protection because of the heat durring melting and working with metal. And the Bear skin coat, plus the moose cloak. But everything boils down to, what you're preparing to do on your TLD day. If carry a lot of items from A to B, and you know there are little chance of blizzard on the rute, one can dress very light, to carry as much items as possible. Leather shoes or running shoes are good for those fast A to B transport situations. And if going to combat with a Bear or Moose, one could go for heavy but high protective clothes on seldom occations. But I use on Bear and Moose hunt, mostly just warm clothes that are not super heavy. So when escaping from the dangerous animal, you are more mobile. Have myself played mostly only Pilgrim mode, so I haven't much experience, how frequent and dangerous wolves, moose, and Bears are in the higher difficulty modes. But I can imagine much more frequent and more dangerous. So wearing light clothes for transporting as much items from A to B, could be more risky in those higher difficulty modes. Could imagine warmth, and protective clothes are prioritized higher in those modes.

I always go for high protection tank style builds for outfit and with certain ones I c take bear attacks and only take about 3% out of 100% health My 2 favorite outfit setup is, moose coat, layered with expedition parka, ballistic vest, combat boots, wool toque which the toque gets ruined during bear attacks almost every time Or doing expedition parka with the wolf skin coat

In my opinion i think the clothing has too many similar clothing, especially the inner torso clothing. It baffles me that a T shirt is equally as warm as a sweatshirt, and that MOUNTAIN CLIMBING BOOTS are equally as warm as RUNNING SNEAKERS. there are so many weird clothing stats that some clothes have that make zero sense and in my opinion some clothes should not be 0.5 or 1, it should be 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 then 1 or somewhere in between

I run combat pants on the inner and deerskin pants/snow pants (loper/lower) on the outer. They have 0.5 °C lower, but it weighs less and has no mobility impact! (It has less wind resistance but it's on the inner slot only so that is a non-issue

You never use the Combat Boots? Dude! Those are the best struggle boots against wolves, you just need a 75-100% quality hunting knife and that boots to counter multiple wolf attacks when unexpected and that pair of boots saved my life A LOT and I mean...A LOT. It's just kinda sad that I hardly can encounter a Moose to craft a Moose Cloak for further protection against those wolves, I know right that Satchel is top priority, so as the only good struggle protection clothing item, the Combat Boots, will be maintained by me. Even the wolves serves with essential guts for tool crafting, especially the new update further inspires us to gather as many guts as possible to be cured and craft great gear out of them.

In my opinion the best clothes combo is rabbit hat, technical balaclava, double bear coat, double cowichan, gauntlets double ski pants and wool longjohns, and then insulated boots and climbing socks for legs. For accessories, the best 2 are either wool ear wrap or ptarmigan down, and moose hide satchel

I don't know about this list. I disagree with a number of the choices you got, plus i've looked at different things, i've used a lot of lower end gear because the only difference on my total warmth changes by one but, for example with the running shoes, it gave me significantly more mobility than wearing deer skin boots. Guess it all depends how you want to go about things
