In my voyager run (first run ever) I was trying to speed up the process of getting to day 500 and trying to find a spot where I wouldn't have to worry about cabin fever. Found a pretty good outdoor location in Ash Canyon--a shack with one of those "interior" areas you could crouch in and be semi-protected from the cold.. I just started playing this about a week or so ago, and I had this really good run going, around 60 days survived, I had full rabbit/wolf/deerskin clothes, a mooseskin satchel, and 2 bear skins curing back at my base. I was doing super well and I was super warm, I hadn't experienced coldeness in several days so I was getting real comfortable with sleeping outdoors. I had been playing this particular run for 24 straight hours (bad ADHD-induced obsession) and I was exploring a new region I hadn't been to before, with no shelter in sight. My character was completely tired out and over encumbered by a ton and was moving super slow, and so I didn't have the patience to look for a shelter, so I huddled up next to a cliff hoping it'd protect me from the wind and I intended to just sleep for a few hours and move on, but because I was so tired irl, I completely blanked out and slept for a whole 12 hours, and a blizzard hit in that time, killing me instantly. I honestly laughed so much, what a silly way to go, especially having bunkered up at the Quonset Garage for the last month or so, surrounded by both a bear, a moose, and who knows how many wolves the whole time.

A lot of these are from impulsive decisions, mainly sleeping with a hot fire in the open for too long. The weather can change within an hour, so it’s unsafe to sleep for more than an hour unless the fire is sheltered in a cave or stove. I’ve been there where I slept next to a moose carcass while waiting for it to cook, and my fire blew out while I was resting for an hour, woke up to a complete whiteout blizzard. I made it but it was still a close call.

One thing I've learned in all my hours of The Long Dark gameplay: complacency will get you killed. For these streamers, it was 10 hours of sleep in an environment where their fire could go out (if they had one). For me, it was a deer harvest on Interloper where a blizzard settled in during the process of quartering. Rapid hypothermia, total disorientation (Pleasant Valley can do that sometimes), ample amounts of aimless wandering thinking I was on the right path to shelter... only to wander into the path of a wolf while condition was far too low. As Jacob Geller once put it: "The cold magnifies our flaws, reveals our every imperfection. It doesn't forgive mistakes."

Some of you really need to learn how to click properly. When a wolf gets me, I hold my mouse steady with my left hand, hunch over my mouse, and vibrate my right arm rapidly, while using the tip of my index finger nail instead of actually trying to do individual clicks. Trust me, with this method I click over 10 times per second and it makes wolf struggles a breeze.

Some decent lessons to take away from here: -Never sleep in the wide open outdoors. Your fire WILL be snuffed out by the wind, and you’ll wake up half frozen. -Never leave a fire without torch training. For warmth and for wolves. -Don’t EVER screw with bears unless you have a plan, and a backup plan. -If you’re freezing at a fire, try and cook something that’ll give you a “warmth” bonus, like tea, coffee, or some canned food. -And never, EVER, walk blindly into the Dam, or the Cannery during an aurora. Watch for wires, always.

The game will miss inputs if you click too fast, or if your settings are off, and your fps is too high or too low. Steady and even is best. I *can* manually click with my arthritic hands, and have tested in with an online tool. I can maintain about 4.5 clicks/second, and that will generally win the struggle for me, but I do get beaten up a bit, the struggle does not go quickly (except with the Heavy Hammer... that thing is OP to get a wolf off of you, without killing or hurting it). I do it at the rate of ~12 clicks per second, which is not always perfectly rhytmical, and ending a struggle on Loper usually takes about 2 seconds if I use a hammer and have to fill the struggle bar completely.

@Zaknafein2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no - its randomly determined how far you need to fight each struggle. Sometimes you just click a couple times and its over - other times it needs to fill the bar. The issue is that some players dont click fast enough and that kills them. Its possible to fail a struggle and survive if you have enough health and armor - eventually it will end and you pass out, but the wolf walks away. Personally I use the Hold function rather than clicking. You take more damage but its more reliable.

I don’t play interloper so I’m not sure if it’s any different but in a few of these guys cases they had a prybar, if they used that they could’ve survived some of these attacks, I play on voyager and pretty much every weapon in a wolf struggle works the same way, I always fall to half health before they back off, but if I pull out the prybar during the struggle they instantly run off almost everytime without fail and I only lose like 10-20 health, I’m not sure if it’s different on stalker or interloper but this is just something I’ve noticed.
@Zaknafein2 жыл бұрын
Sev3517, it might be different on lower levels as I haven't seen tests done there, but that's because on lower difficulties you rarely die from a single wolf attack because the wolves' power level has been reduced. On interloper, a single attack can kill you. That being said, though, there has been some tests and in all of them the prybar is consistently the WORST weapon in a struggle on interloper. It ends in most deaths. Hatchet is best. So prybar wouldn't have made a difference in these cases, I'm afraid :) Thanks for the insight, thought

I know this sounds very wrong. But after watching this video. I have the urge to make all wolfs go extinct.

Sleep is the cousin of death

1st death could of easily been preventable, the moment you notice you are falling you could pause the game and quit out and than re log as long as you are free falling for more than 5 seconds you have plenty of time to react All bear deaths are 100% preventable too, just open the Xbox home button and close application or simply shut off your Xbox during the bear attack, this does not work with wolves if you do this with a wolf it instantly deleted your character even if full health

Yes, this is true, but many people consider this cheating and is not an in-game preventative. But people can play however they want :)

@@Zaknafein I usually only use it if I'm in a situation where I know doing the glitch will always prevent it, or use it to revert saves if like I wasted my last shot in revolver or my bow

DAMN, I could offer some clip that just happened recently. xD But It wouldn't be in english so kinda sucks. I just cheated death and since it was the first time I had to do this, I chose 20 days of -50% condition... And respawned in Broken Railroad. There I got jumped on by a wolf in the outer area of the maintenance yard, I used the hammer and dropped down to 1-2% condition and really managed to still put the bandage on, and find the bed in the dark with whacky movement and could safe myself. I felt so cool that moment. :D
